@TheSingtangpaScienceGuy
@TheSingtangpaScienceGuy 4 года назад
Hi. That happens very often especially with specimens of the Pieridae family. Happens every other time. Not always. I personally dont take that as an issue because once they are pinned, spread, mounted and dried, everythings back to normal. Removing and reinserting the pin somewhere along the central axis of the abdomen might solve the problem. Hope that helps. 🙂

Hi! Very informative video, thank you! I don’t know if my question is silly but here it goes: can I use this method to preserve a moth or butterfly that has been found already dead?
@TheSingtangpaScienceGuy
@TheSingtangpaScienceGuy 4 года назад
If its still fresh, u can. If it was long dead, probably a couple of days to weeks, it needs to be rehydrated to soften the wings so they can be spread out without damage. Rehydration of the insect will require a special rehydrating box though. Been planning to make a video on rehydrating dry specimens using rehydrating box. Busy with other video projects right now.
@TheSingtangpaScienceGuy
@TheSingtangpaScienceGuy 4 года назад
Rehydrating box can be made from a tupperware container. Place a pad of moist tissue paper at the bottom and place a small dish or tray on top of it. Keep the specimen on the dry tray. Add some moth balls to the container, cover it tight. Check the specimen a couple of days later. It would have softened by then. Good luck

That requires patience and practice. From the moment u run around with the net to the moment u finished mounting , there shud be minimal contact with the main surface of the wing. Try as much as possible to handle the wings, only at the time of positioning the wings, that too only at the costa region of the wings (see video) Then u will have a flawless wind

@TheSingtangpaScienceGuy
@TheSingtangpaScienceGuy 3 года назад
Sorry for late reply. If insect is freshly dead, no need of any injections. If insect was long dried, u need to rehydrate the appendages in a rehydration box. Rehydrating in a rehydration box Video is coming soon. Do stay tuned. And if its a large specimen such as a moth with large abdomen, you can inject a few ml of isopropyl alcohol or formalin 4% into the abdomen. Or better still, u can excise the abdomen and dip in acetone to remove fats and then stitch it back . All these techniques are actually in my video project list. Would be great if u can wait for them

Thank you for the tutorial. Would I need additional steps for thicker abdomens/thorax species? For example, a white lined sphinx moth? Thanks!
@TheSingtangpaScienceGuy
@TheSingtangpaScienceGuy 6 месяцев назад
My pleasure. Based on my experience , sphinx moths dont need any additional steps. However, those with tangibly soft abdomens (such as atlas moth, moon moth etc) need to be injected with isopropyl alcohol/ethanol/formalin and then pinned and mounted as usual preferaby under a table lamp/heat source. Or if you are confident enough you can make a midline dorsal incision from the base of thorax all the way down and gut it. Replace the removed viscera with cotton/similar filling material. close it back. Pin and mount.

Hi. Butter paper or tracing paper is the American equivalent of wax paper / glassine. You can also use parchment. The point is that when you use any of the above translucent papers, you can see the position and angle of the spread wings through these papers and make necessary adjustments. Another method (which i do not normally use) is to use thin and long strips of any kind of paper to hold the wings. Two strips are usually used for one wing. Hope that helped. Good luck 😊

What pin number is used for butterflies and moths?
@TheSingtangpaScienceGuy
@TheSingtangpaScienceGuy 3 года назад
depends on size. Very small. No.00-1. Small/medium No.1-3, Large No.5. Very large (especially saturnid moths) No.7. There's no universal Butterflies and Moths pin number really. Once you have the various pin sizes on one hand and the butterfly on another hand, you can easily make a judgment on what pin size would be appropriate for that particular specimen.

@TheSingtangpaScienceGuy
@TheSingtangpaScienceGuy 3 года назад
Hi. Pin the butterfly on a piece of styrofoam board (not spreading board) insert a long sewing/stitching needle through one corner of a rectangular 2x10cm (approx) strip of heavy cardstock paper. Make 2 such pinned strips. Open the wings and hold down both sides of the wings using the two strips of paper, one for each side of the wing. Hold them down in a outward slanting position relative to the body of the butterfly and push the sewing needle through the styrofoam. Keep on pushing the needle into the styrofoam until the wings are open till the angle that you want them in.. You can just leave it at this point to dry. Or you can spread the fore and hindwings a bit by inserting thin insect pins through the costae of fore and hingwings and lifting them outwards and upwards till they are at 90 degrees to the axis of the body (see video). Hope that helped. I will plan on making a video on this.

Same thing with Thermocol, which in other countries like the US is known by the name Styrofoam. As long as the paper is translucent enough to give good visual of the wings, as long as its smooth, porous/breathable/absorbent, and preferably free of residual static charge, it will work just fine.
