As a beginning flower gardener, I can’t thank you two enough for the helpful tips! Thank you for so freely Sharing your wisdom with us! Love from zone 7b!
Id love to see a video on how you decide on the flowers, as in how many LARGE flowers you order, how many sm, medium flowers, how many FILLER flowers, etc.
Such a helpful video - thank you SO MUCH for making your Master List available. I have been spending it seems like HOURS trying to find these tidbits of information because my brain too prefers to see it all written down in one easy to reference place! To other flower friends - just know that the Master List contains the info I was looking for plus so much more all in an easy to use chart! It will save you hours and hours of research and you can tweak the information to your own needs and create your own if you wish!
Even just understanding the categories of types of flowers to grow is huge for me. My brain didn't go there at all. I just want a flower garden for personal enjoyment and to share with friends, nothing fancy, but I didn't even know where to start. Thanks for this excellent video!
This is an amazing resource! I am all about over preparedness and this is the first video about planning a cut garden that speaks to this level of organization. Thank you, thank you, thank you! As I’m planning next year’s cut flower garden I have rewatched this four times already! I’ve created my own to scale layout in excel, I have a master spreadsheet planning approximated seed start, move to greenhouse, pot up, last frost, transplant, hopeful blooms, and first frost date. Other information, planning spacing, noting if they need to be pinched, color palette, how many, staking system, row covers, and anything else’s. My seeds have been organized by start month, or direct sow month. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Thank you so much!
That’s wonderful, Chelsea! Our grandma always said a good plan is half the work, and I think you will have a much more enjoyable season for having done all that preparation! We can share what we do, but everybody has to put in the work to make it customized for them.
I just came across your channel yesterday. I have totally been binge watching. I've grown vegetables for years, and flowers just for my own pleasure. I have decided I want to attempt a cut flower garden. You have been very helpful already!
Welcome! Wonderful! We'd like to warn you that growing cut flowers is a little bit addictive, but in the best way. :) Remember to have fun doing it and that is half of the success right there.
Oh my Gosh can i just THANK YOU! For sharing your excel planting guide. I spent hours trying to create a spreadsheet for cash sales and credit sales, number of visits, etc... you ladies are amazing.🌹
Thank you so much for all the helpful info. No, you are not a nerd. I Love, Love the lists & spreadsheets idea. We just bought a small 8 acre farm and I can't wait to start a flower farm. Thank you.
😲 I LOVE IT! Oh shit I never thought I'd LOVE to see such spreadsheets n organization. I personally SUCK at it but started up recently so I can better handle my garden but to also start dabbling in cut flowers. PLUS I can download your spreadsheets ? Oh crap you've just helped this adhd brain out so much💯🌻
New Subscriber Here! 🌼 I live in NE Ohio, Zone 5b. 🌸 I am really trying to get my organization down before the Spring hustle begins! I can't wait to start seeds!
I am a big fan of spreadsheets, not necessarily a "love" of spreadsheets... I really hate doing them. But! I Love reading them when they are finally done. Thank you for letting us know where to find your version of your spreadsheets!
Oh wow, Hello. I am glad I found this (your video). Very scary on all the info I should be gathering. Thank you so much, I would rather know now than not till I have started planting.
Amount of lists and charts that i do is enormous)) I do and them reorganise them, they ended up very similar to yours. I love idea od exel map of a plot, im gonna borrow that)))
I would love to come a be an apprentice and help you grow flowers. I love to plant but recently moved to the city. Your gardens are beautiful and your videos are full of lessons.❤
Nice video. The claim about the full moon being colder is an urban legend though. There's no influence of the moon phase on temperature, nada. I'm a physics PhD.
I just found your channel and I love it!! I know this is from last year but can you share your growing chart and what kind of seed starting mix do you use? I have tried so many and they work ok but costly. Thank you so much. I’m in Ohio zone 6a so it would be sooo helpful
Thank you for this video, your work ethic is inspiring !! This is my first year starting seeds indoors for fun and love. I am also in zone 6a. Do you feel like we may need to wait to plant until the weekend after Mother's Day? I have zinnia, bachelors buttons, china aster, and cosmos from Floret, Dahlia tubers from Zephyros Farm, Lupine from Annies Annuals, then Phlox and Echinacea from Santa Rosa Gardens. Do you think I have room for a little bit of all of that in a 10' by 3' raised bed, or should i think about a bigger bed and/or placing in inconspicuous places in my yard? Also, (last question I swear lol), I think i may have some cosmos and zinnias that are ready now to be transplanted because they've grown so vigorously ( I know they can't go in the garden yet ) do I need to place them into larger pots for the next 3/4 weeks?
Hi there... we think it may be best to wait to plant until after the last frost date, which is the first weekend of May. We've been planting out the cold tolerant things like delphinium that can take a little frost. Last year the last frost came the first part of April! But you never know, and it's ALWAYS better to play it on the safe side when it comes to tender plants. Not sure on the bed size, but follow the recommendations for spacing for each plant. And it may be good to bump zinnias and cosmos up to larger pots so they don't get root bound. It's always tough to know when to start plants so they have enough but not too much time to get established! Best of luck with your garden this year!
This is a wonderful informational video. Is it possible to get a copy of the Seeding Requirements spreadsheet? I downloaded the other. But, did not see the link for it. Thank you so much.
Hi, i'm also a zone 6a, maybe 5b but I'm located in Quebec. In january there is still a lot of snow on the grown, also in febuary. I'm wondering how I can put low tunnel in the ground in january and planting my ranunculus in febuary! Also, I love your videos, it really helps me out!
It actually snowed on us the day we planted the ranunculus! We like to put up the skeleton of the low tunnel in the fall, then cover the ground inside with black plastic so the sun can warm the soil. We then put the white/clear tunnel plastic on a few weeks before we plant into the tunnel to create the greenhouse environment and further warm and dry the soil so it's ready for planting. This method won't work in all zones, especially not if you get lots of snow, but it works for us.
Great videos! Do you have a pdf or link to the spreadsheet you use that you keep a lot of your seed information on? The really long one you showed in the video? I need something like this but am struggling! Thank you
I'm curious what your grow system looks like (type of lights etc)? You mentioned that it is in the basement. What temperature do you aim for? Thanks for the tips!
It's very basic. :) We have 1 lifetime table and 1 shorter table with 3 grow lights suspended over them from the ceiling. We use chains to hang the lights so we can adjust them. That part of the basement doesn't have a heat supply so the average temperature is probably somewhere between 50 and 60. This winter has been mild, so it's probably closer to 60 degrees. If I think it's a little cool for a certain variety (celosia, cosmos, gomphrena, zinnia), I'll pop it onto a heat mat to help it germinate. Thanks for the question! :)
Do you have a template of the chart that you input the information about your flowers from the book? I'd love to purchase that from you! I'm very new to all of this and love how organized you are this would be extremely helpful!
We created two cut flower gardening classes in 2021. The master list of growing and sowing requirements is available in the "How to Plan a Cut Flower Garden" class. Find our cut flower gardening classes here: rootdesignco.thinkific.com/
