Good video! I am personally irritated when I see single elevators in transit systems. Ever since going to Hong Kong, where transit elevators always seem to occur in pairs, I have realized the importance of redundancy. Whenever one is out of operation, you can take the other. Because Toronto has retrofitted their old stations with only single elevators, it means that mobility challenged people would have to go to a different station to use transit when the elevator doesn't work. This is crazy. Putting in a second elevator when you put in the first has a cost, but it is a cost you would bear if you truly care about the customer experience.
@RMTransit

Fortunately redundant elevators are becoming the standard in places across Canada. At the same time more and more island platforms generally also mean more and more built in redundant elevators which is good

Singapore is now adding 2nd lifts to its train platforms from the Thomson-E Coast Line onwards (eccept Caldecott for some reason, & though some of our deepest stations e.g. Bras Basah, Bencoolen already had them, though curiously not Promenade, which is just as deep) but each lift has a different call button that isn't linked to the other lift, which is a glaring omission to me (except at Shenton Way & Bright Hill stations where the lifts are at different ends of the platform). Probably the government cheaped out by overly-standardizing our lift designs (e.g. to be the same as lifts used in standalone fashion such as those at station entrances, most of which have only 1 lift each. All lifts also run at only 1m/s (except hydraulic ones), whether or not its at shallower stations, or those in ~22m deep lift shafts serving our deepest stations)
@lzh4950
@lzh4950 Год назад
If a station's lift is being serviced today though, notices will also be placed at all other stations' lifts to inform lift users

A good station is when your station and its vicinity practically become a town centre of that area, where people expect to come here everyday for all sort of daily activity. Mostly Singapore and Hong Kong, where new housing development put a station as the focal point, would be the best example. Also it would be cool if your train station can do more than its supposed function, such as civil defense. Most underground stations of Singapore are air raid bunker with necessities prepared all the time. There was one big flood in KL where a huge station has function as victim shelter for weeks. Wonder if there is other examples?

arguably a country with little rail transport could use good railway stations more than countries with more and better rail services- if only because a station is the first impression a new passenger gets for any rail system

Great points as always, I do think all stations can have a shop though. Even if its just a little convinces/store news paper booth type set up. Renting out the far ends of a platform creates either a revenue stream for operations, or a low cost space for a small business to start operating. And having eyes on the station makes users feel a little safer. Another things I would add are Public washrooms at most rail stops or BRT stops. Overhead development is great in dense cities, and provides some revenue to keep the station kclean and built in users, and as mentioned TOD for community centers in general.
@user-hv6wb5gk8p

Clean, public washrooms are a major priority from an accessibility standpoint because a surprising number of people have serious impairments. Especially as people age issues becomes more common and those people can usually afford a car if they want to. After all, shitting yourself at the train station is a pretty good way to make you buy a car.
@EzeroXP

I think you are 100% right. A small shop where you can buy someting to drink or something to eat should be in every station. At the very least some vending machines are necessary.
@neolithictransitrevolution427
@neolithictransitrevolution427 2 года назад
@@EzeroXP Vending machines a good too, although people don't usually want a hot coffee from a machine in my experience. I do think if you put up an add on your transit agency saying "Bring your own shop" and let people set up a table on the ends of platforms, you'll always have someone who is willing to do it if its free. And then if there are a few people you can have them bid for the month to maximize the productivity, see if people will offer 50 bucks a month and so on. Just like an E-bay style online market for space at each platform edges at each station. Like the point shouldn't just be that people can buy things, but also that you create a place for people to sell new ideas, imo.

@@user-hv6wb5gk8p Yes! Now that I'm an "older" person, I appreciate washrooms (we use the term "toilets" here in the UK) at rail stations. This isn't a problem at major stations/termini because they're always well provided for but I think more could be done at less-used locations. Indeed in London there's a distinct lack of facilities at Underground stations... the only one I know of is at Baker Street, associated with the terminus platforms of the Metropolitan "main line".

Most important station design element IMO is reducing walk time (both within the station and getting to the station). If you have to walk 7 minutes just inside the station (like some Chinese metros) just to get onto a train, that makes metro less competitive to the car. On the outside, the stations should have doors access points from multiple directions and be located in a high density zoned neighborhoods. Putting a station next to say a huge used car dealership lot is a huge waste. A good transit engineer should consider walk time in seconds for all contingencies and work to minimize it.

As a Canadian who has visited Japan numerous times - clear signage should be one of the fundamentals of a great station. Clearly pointing out transit connections, numbering station exits and making these signs visible is what Japan excels at and what Toronto needs to make improvements on. Even as a visitor to Japan, I could easily tell a friend to meet me at exit 3, or easily navigate throughout a concourse.
@lzh4950
@lzh4950 Год назад
Singapore is now switching from lettering to numbering its station exits as numbers are language-neutral (so they're easier to understand by non-English speakers). On the flip side its no longer giving bus stops nearest to stations single digit numbers (in addition to the 5-digit codes that all bus stops in our country have), removing a way of simplifying navigation from train stations to connecting buses

Chicago has two major train stations next to each other, Ogilvie Station and Union Station, and they couldn't be more different. Although one thing they have in common is they are not directly connected to the city's L system. Ogilvie is modern station (100,000+ riders/day and 16 tracks) with clean sightlines, information monitors, nice retail, and easy access to all the platforms. It also has decent bus connections immediately outside the main entrance. It's an easy station to get into, navigate, get the information you need, and find your track platform. Union Station is a beautiful historic building (140,000+ riders/day and 24 tracks) but it is a labyrinth of claustrophobic corridors, side room, cubby holes, and stairs and escalators, inside. No single corridor runs the length of the station and the turns and elevation changes are sure to leave you totally disoriented relative to where you are inside the station and the streets outside. Finding the platforms can also be difficult. As for bus connections, it has plenty but finding them can also be tricky as the station can be accessed from various sides and once you're in it, it's hard to tell which side you're on. It's a huge shame because the old part of the station is gorgeous.

It's shocking how terrible transfers are at many US stations between the local transit (Subway or light rail) and intercity transit. Take for example Atlanta. You have ZERO transfer points between MARTA's subway network, GRTA Buses, the streetcar, and Amtrak. I think Amtrak should be extended close to downtown. It's in the far end of the city.
@neolithictransitrevolution427
@neolithictransitrevolution427 2 года назад
Ya I don't necessarily think Intercity and Intracity hubs need to be at the same place, because many intercity bus travelers may actually just be transfering to the intercity train, it may add more time for traveler going to the next city, and because intercity isn't a trip most users make frequently, but any intercity station should certainly be served by the highest order Tansit the system uses. You should be able to get a direct link to the central intracity hub, and preferably the local airport as well.

@@bronxsportsfan I didn't mean to disagree, I just mean there should be a Subway to the Amtrak station, which should also act as the local Intercity bus terminal for Athens and Macon Etc busses, instead of having Amtrak and all the busses go to Peach Tree Center or something. Although, the airport might be a better intercity hub tbh since there isn't great Amtrak service and there is a n airport link. The Amtrak station should probably just be moved to Lenox or something tbh, better to be far away and connected then close and in the middle of nowhere. East Point is probably the best place for it, but IDK the routes Amtrak runs through Atlanta so maybe thats on the wrong rail spur.

I mentioned closer to downtown mainly due to the fact that the downtown area does have tracks nearby. The Falcons stadium has 2-3 tracks running North-South next to it, and is connected to MARTA subway. This area would be a major trip generator. And it is within walkable or bike able distance to many key points downtown. This would help improve the traffic situation immensely for regional travelers. If you ask me, it makes more sense to route passenger trains downtown and reroute freight trains away from downtown or reschedule them to off peak hours if there arises crowding concerns. The I 75-85 concrete monstrosity made summers in the already hot deep south climate even more exhausting due to UHI & Emissions. I hope some of it is converted into greenspace with subtropical palms and more transit is used to supplement.

While not quite in the best location in the city, Amtrak’s 30th street station is iconic and is a good passenger experience. It has regional rail, subway, bus, and pedestrian connections. pretty comprehensive overall, but for many stations, just having a platform at a height so that you actually can get onto the train without climbing exercises, would be a good start. The amount of Amtrak platforms, where a little stool is provided and the train has to stop at that exact spot, so that one door of the train is opened, and then you hope that people climbing down those vertical steps, don't miss that stool on their way down - that is ridiculous. How much money does it cost to upgrade from stood to platform. Also, providing restrooms would be a great addition to most rail stations. Ticketing offices and concession stands all require a certain amount of traffic, but in some ways, convenience and a pleasant experience would help draw traffic in. Bike racks, parking, and convenient bus or other transportation access pretty much makes-or-brakes the mid-size train station, imo. I love large stations that are basically designed like shopping malls or at least airport terminals, and are major transportation hubs, but so far I have to travel in Europe to find those. Recently been through Zurich and Vienna, both great experiences. You basically don't want to leave, that is how nice they are. And both have full grocery stores built in, and the value-add that the surrounding area gets from such stores, is enormous. It's a long way to go here in US, but I still find that huge impressive halls, seem to be the preferred design in the US. For the same amount of money you could build convenient and well functioning stations too. Wonder who allocates these budgets?

I'm talking about the Amtrak trains in the US, obviously, not European trains, even though there are problems even there. I have suspicion that the designer of the station took the inspiration from stations in NY without knowing the real function of reclining only "bench" just because "it's similar like in NY so it must be good". While stations in NY use that to prevent homeless sleeping on there, it's not relevant in Indonesia because there is no homeless that stay inside the station area thanks to the tight station security. Even if there are homeless near station area they cannot even enter the station area in the first place. I wish it's replaced soon and glad that I heard some are replaced gradually.

The train cars that stop in front of these stairs were stuffed almost exclusively with Ajax bound passengers, you couldn't walk through them if you wanted to. I imagine it was crazy trying to get through that mess to catch a bus. First off, I did notice some new transitions and with that said, I really appreciate the fact that you always put very fitting imagery and videos proving your point with sufficient quality. I raise my hat to you! Onto the topic itself, I think accessibility should also include proper signage and easy ways to get around the station. For instance, King's Cross and Euston in London can feel really overwhelming as a non-local and some regional trains can only be reached by corridors with steps which make you question whether that's an official hallway towards a station, a construction site or an hallway for employees only. Which brings me to the point that a station can inhabit different kinds of transport modes, shops, stores and such. I really appreciate these features but it can be too much. Especially with Kings Cross St Pancras or Birmingham New Street, I had a terrible time navigating through because the former feels like Frankenstein's station with multiple big hubs combined into one without much seperation and the latter has a confusing layout, LOTS of stores and it feels like commerce was the top priority and transport second. It was pretty crowded too due to the layout. That shows how hard a good station in big cities can be because usually, you only extend a station instead of create a new one (as a buiilding anew is expensive) and then you can have way too huge stations which could trump airports at times. Do you think it is because some may fear that a station doesn't have much value if it's built with transportation in mind first? Or do you know of big cities with successful new built stations/hubs?

Ottawa's Line 1 is filled with lessons on what not to do with transit stations. The above ground stations do not provide shelter from sun, wind, rain, or snow and have minimal seating. The distance to the bus stops is too far, especially at Bayview (shown in RM's video) and Hurdman, which exists solely to be a transfer point. It's always fun to see a light fixture swinging hard in the wind, wondering when it will break. And Ottawa gets to see more of this with Line 2, which will go from a working system to more of the same from Line 1 when it opens.

It hapened that the king (and nobility) really wanted to have mansions in a sea-side town or just make a fast weekend visit, so, they finance an entire railway. The cities that were near the line developed in the direction of the station, moving the town-centers, but this lead to the development around the rails making sence. Today this is the line that moves the most people/day and its end-station is the most busy in the capital.

Fairly easy to navigate (although knowing which exit goes where is a problem) and it has lots of shops and is attached to the main shopping centre for bham. It also connects directly to the tramline. Only problem is it’s distance from a lot of the terminating stops for buses serving the city centre. As most buses in bham finish in the city and turn around and go back out.

You really summed up everything that makes a good rail transit hub :D On the topic of Montreal and rail stations, I feel that one area the city could _especially_ improve on is Gare Centrale. At least from what I've seen on Google Maps and online, I get the impression that it very much falls into that same trap as other post-war subterranean terminals. For one thing, it has very confusing pedestrian and transit access, as I counted only four narrow pedestrian entrances, while the best covered access to the nearest Metro stop and bus station at Bonaventure entails a long and winding walk through the Underground City. Also, the problem of prioritizing cars over pedestrians shows up very glaringly in the form of the extremely utilitarian 1960s parkade, with the addition of minimal access to the dark and dingy platforms. Mistakes like confusing intermodal transfers, nonexistent platform amenities, and the prioritization of parking over the fundamental station environment have been made _many_ times in the past. I just hope that Gare Centrale can be better than this someday.

In the last couple of decades, Boston disimproved a couple of their transit stations: Ashmont Station used to look bad and run-down, but at least it gave you good shelter and gave you cross-platform transfer between the Mattapan High-Speed Line and the Red Line or buses and the Red Line; the new Ashmont Station is a wind tunnel, and the cross-platform transfers are just gone. Kenmore Station on the Green Line used to have a nice semi-enclosed bus shelter, and they replaced it with a glass canopy that is completely open on 3 sides, giving much less protection from wind and rain and no protection from the Sun.

The improved safety with more open sightlines seems like one more reason to choose elevated rail and stations over underground ones where it's otherwise a toss-up between the two. I wonder if there's any data showing that violent crime is less frequent in at or above grade stations and trains...

Many of Singapore's newer underground stations (built in the 21th century onwards) have open-concept designs i.e. from the ticket concourse/hall, you can look down at the platforms at the floor below which provides more open sightlines too. In contrast, some elevated stations' platforms are having their atriums looking down to the ticket concourse/hall below filled up so as to expand the platforms' floor area & increase capacity

Regarding the point of shelter, we Hong Konger, who love air conditioning, loves to have shelter against the weather often with part of it as a mall, from where we live all the way along to the rail station and from the rail station to office block, for example in Tsueng Kwan O and the areas around Shatin and Tseun Wan Station. I think this makes travelling by the MTR much safer and more attractive than other forms as my journey is not affected by the weather at all. When building a new station, attention should be paid not only at the station itself but also its pedestrian connections to major destinations around it. Which makes me hate some area such as the along the old Ma On Shan Line section, Whampoa and Southern Horizon where a continuous shelter is easily achievable but leave lots of gap without shelter

My favorite terrible station is the Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe ICE station, nicknamed "the palace of the winds" because the cold winds constantly sweep not only across the platforms, but also through the concourse, making it incredibly uncomfortable to spend any amount of time there unless it's summer. The only places to escape the wind are a few little shops. It's functional, with many long-distance and local trains plus a huge tram stop, but so needlessly uncomfortable.

IMO stations with platforms underground, like New York Penn, Brussels Central and Birmingham New Street, are horrible, no matter what the upper storeys are like. Stations with transparent or translucent roof or canopies (like Manchester Piccadilly) are preferable. Have a look at Geoff Marshall’s recent videos where he visited six recently-opened stations in Great Britain to see what facilities these have. They seemed to be pretty well designed. When it comes to ticket and information provision, a few years ago at Munich Hauptbahnhof there was a separate English-speaking desk to help tourists, which I found very useful, despite speaking some German and having travelled in Germany quite a lot for both work and pleasure. In contrast, on one occasion I arrived at Graz Airport, wanting to take the train to Maribor in Slovenia (not too far from the Austrian border). There was no information aimed at tourists and the ticket machines were positively unhelpful. We went to the suburban station where we had to change from the S-Bahn to the inter-city, and fortunately there was a staffed ticket office there where the staff were able to help us. Ticket machines often make sense to the people who know the local system, but are impenetrable to travellers from elsewhere.

I have to agree to the seating factor. It's kinda annoying if you're in a foreign city and waiting for your train back home without beeing able to take a seat. Personally, I think Hamburg Hauptbahnhof (central station) is a good example of beeing a bad train station. Of course it's in the center of the city with good connections, but it has to many passengers passing throu on too less space, seating oppertunities and so on.

My Home Station - Is Reading (UK) opened in1840, it of course has been upgraded many times, In 1989 a new station concourse was added, as well as a multi-level car park, the 1860 ticket office converted into a Pub. Between 2009-2015 the station was upgraded again, new overbridge (with shops) 5 new platforms, new tracks, electrification - Elizabeth Line trains will terminate here. Whilst we only have buses no mass transit, buses depart from both north and south entrances. The station is to the North of the Town Centre, although developments south of the station are increasing. Whats more odd it's only got 1 mainline platform active but has everything else a modern station has atleast by post 2010 where it was refurbished for tall ships races coming over and theres plans for another one this year bringing back old platform 1 that was left abandoned since the 1990's along with a new footbridge (Covered roof along with Lift system) construction starting later this year. Though the connections to the local bus services is well questionable.... With only intercity sevices actually terminating at the train station and a short walk across a dual carrageway is required to reach all the local services.

I think you're missing a crucial element: orientation. This applies mainly to larger stations, but a building where you intuitively know where to go offers a much smoother experience than one where the setup is confusing. Moreover, it will improve the flow of passenger streams, thus creating a much more organized feel. My home station (Leiden, NL) perhaps isn't the prettiest in the country, but its layout makes it very easy to navigate: one platform for trains going south, one for those going north, and a third one for services east.

The integration between train+bus is interesting in Seattle. They're not necessarily owned by the same agency (the rail is Sound Transit vs. the buses are a mix of King County Metro, Community Transit, and Sound Transit), but at least the ORCA card works for all of them. That said, it seems like coordination between the agencies isn't a very high priority. It's never been clear how inter-mode transfers work with ORCA, if they do at all. Even basic rider usability can be kind of questionable. At the recently-opened Northgate rail station, which has four bus bays for connections, most of the video signs announcing incoming buses are so far away from the actual boarding spots that you can't see them; they might as well not exist. Most of the rail stations that I've seen don't have any "next train in N minutes" notifications at all. The Link rail is just a single line right now, but it makes even that single train line into a bit of a mystery.

Some aspects are really important to make a station a good station, while some are just some nice to have options which should be available the larger and more important a station gets. Thus some things which are important to me are wide platforms, easy access also for disabled people, so there should be elevators and platforms with level boarding, and the distances you have to walk should be kept both short and simple. Also signs should be clear, easy to see, and PA announcements should be loud and clear. Also public transit should be nearby a pedestrian bridge or underpass; The more rural it gets a park and ride lot makes sense as well. Sth I hated about services in some places in the US is that you won't be allowed to enter the platform on your own but that you have to wait in the hall until boarding time. I like to decide myself where I want to wait and when I go to the train

As you said in the video, this is especially important in Canada because of the cold winters but also in many places around the world that experience extreme heat. I cannot believe that in a city as cold and snowy as Québec City, the people planning the tramway line there didn’t consider having a weather-protected connection between the main train station and a tram station. The fact that they didn’t consider having a good connection between the train station and a tram station, especially with the nearby tram stations being underground, is crazy. The plans are now too advanced to consider changing the route (and I obviously don’t want there to be any more delays with this important transit project), but perhaps they could consider building a pedestrian tunnel so people could get to a tram station without going outside.

Ticket machines seem to be incredibly expensive, I'm guessing in part because of the numerous ways to pay these days. Here in Austin 2 new machines at each rail station for a total of 18 machines cost $1,000,000, which is a lot for only a couple thousand riders a weekday paying $3.50 each. The math surely works out far better for the Montreal metro, but I can see why a system would skimp on ticket machines. And thanks for recognizing the value in park and ride. It seems like transit advocates tend to be too vehemently against it.

Intercity rail is basically your standard railway. It’ll usually go between two large cities with stops at a few smaller cities along the way. In Canada this would be Via rail Commuter rail is like a subway system for suburbs. Basically. You’re looking at a smaller radius of operations, more frequent stops, including multiple stops in larger cities, and being designed to funnel workers from the suburbs into the city for work and then out of the city to sleep. Think of Go trains. Another subset in the train world is regional rail which fall between the previous two. They are meant to connect small towns to each other and to a major hub. If you watch cab videos think of the ones in Japan that travel through the countryside stopping at all the small stations.

Since in North America.. when you look at some suburban networks. Like EXO... the "station" is nothing more than just a slab of concrete and next train signs. Maybe a bus shelter for passengers to wait. Hardly a station. Then when you look at peak hour only networks. Like the West Coast Express; partially sheltered with ticket machines. At some stops there aren't any timetables, at others, there are, but they're presented poorly, and at others, they're actually half decent. Tbh, I wouldn't be surprised if poor quality information is one of the things holding people back from using public transport over here (perhaps another one might be stupid route designs, especially when they loop around housing estates excessively)

Today, I will do something different and complaining about Europeans 😂 Europeans love to complain about "mall-style-stations" because... I don't really know why. Some kind of "romanticism"? Do they think that stations must be something like a cathedral for train enthusiasts? I don't really understand. The reality is, like you said, that economic activities into the stations pays for dividends, and help bringing people to the station, even if they do not actually travel. Those people are still bringing money into the station, and they are also able to "take a look" to the service by seeing trains or hearing announcements... That's something like a "advertisement" of the railway service, in my opinion. Having a lot of shops into your station, not only brings money but also keeps decay away and helps the overall passenger experience. My wait for the train, would be better if I had the opportunity to take a coffee or even useful, if I can go to a supermarket. It's a win-win for everyone!

it depends a bit in which scale it is. In my home town the Central Station has only few shops: kebab and pizza, grocery store, Burger King, 2 bakeries, travel shop, rental car and hairdresser, that's it. Until early 2000 there was a pedestrian underpass to connect the main building to the platforms; Then a mall right across the main building was built and a pedestrian bridge connects the mall with the central station's main building and the platforms in between. In some other places the station is more a mall than a station. Oslo Central Station is kind of interwoven with a mall and directly connected with a 2nd mall and additionally has shops at the station itself. Leipzig Central Station has a 3 level mall on the entire length of the concourse. While this definetly attracts also customers which don't intend to travel, that kind of layout also makes walking distances long. A transfer from tram, bus or subway to a train can be several minutes of walking then, because the shops are located somewhere in the middle and other stops are at the very end of the station hall then. Munich Central Station is a good example for that: commuter rail platforms are on a lower level at the far north of the station, and the subway station is at the very other end of the same station. 5 to 10 minutes of walking ...
