What a great idea about thinking ahead with good holdings preflop and recognizing whether a player who likes to squeeze is in position to do so and then trying to induce that squeeze and punish them for it.
@McGavel1
@McGavel1 8 лет назад
+McGavel1 Also cool points about things to think about when attempting to steal.
@McGavel1
@McGavel1 8 лет назад
+McGavel1 Regarding stealing blinds, cool point about how people are, for some odd reason, surprised when they get 3bet a lot while trying to steal. It's like, ghee man, you're 3-betting me again? They don't realize that it's not just the idea that they're raising and the defender is raising again, it's the specific situation surrounding an attempt to steal (not just raising, but *OPEN* raising from ≈ cutoff position+).

I've found recently in SNGs vs certain opponents it's sometimes fun to open-limp from small blind position vs someone with 1/2 my stack or less when they only have 10xBB or less when I'm holding a strong pair because a high frequency of the time they feel like they can steal my limp with an all-in since they're getting short.

hi james. I love your videos. I watched them after my session because I study at least 1 hr after my session. My question is why do you make examples where you will always hit a set or you always win? Poker isn't like that, I'm sure you're aware of that. My suggestion is make a video where you will make a lay down because you have him on this range etc. Most of your sample hands are "rare hands" at poker, we all know there are lots of marginal situations that are profitable, Thanks!

Hey James , really loved this video .I was looking for something like this to shape up my thought process before the hand even begins. Thank u so much.In this video u talked about preflop profitable 3bets like the J9s at around 29 minute in the video...suppose the villain calls and u go to flop, what wud u take into consideration to fire a cbet or not. I understand the idea that some 3betting is done when we expect lots of folds preflop.but just in case, villain calls , do we abandon firing into the flops or there could be something which can make such 3bets from preflop profitable to post flop profitable as well..would love to know what u think of this.

There are a lot of ways to look at it, but personally I don't consider folding pf to be 0EV. I consider it to be -((BB + SB) / number of players). I think some people might consider folding in the BB to be -1BB EV, and folding in the SB to be -1SB EV, and folding everywhere else to be 0EV. I think that's a bad way to look at it, because it encourages players to be more aggressive in the BB/SB than they should be.

I agree with the rationale behind the decision trees. But at 12:53 for example. How do you set up your HUD to decide whether Qh8h is a cutoff open or not? I find that hard to decide with the blink of an eye. Alan Jackson's rule of thumb is to open any 2 on the button if fold to PFR of SB+BB is 140 or higher. In the cutoff you also have the button to worry about and it's unlikely that 3 players will fold. Can you give us advice on how to set up a HUD without getting lost in all the numbers? If fold to PFR isn't high enough but they fold to a tonne of c-bets, Q8s is probably still an open. But how often do they need to fold to cbet? You could pin a number on this for 1 opponent, but what if there are 2 callers...
@ThePokerBank
@ThePokerBank 10 лет назад
Have you seen our video called "HUD Ninja" yet? That may be a good resource for this kind of question: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9MLFfC9TCiA.html But essentially you can use FoldvsSteal stats and also just general VPIP and PFR. The more fish you have behind you, the less you steal with junk cards. The more nits you have behind you, the more often you steal with junk cards. When in doubt, stay a bit tighter...but there are lots of good steal opportunities if you stay vigilant.
@Limpuls

Okey, so let's say as a default we 3bet QQ+, AK+ for value. But if we are on the button with KK, CO open-raising to us and we know that CO makes a lot folding mistakes, (has high fold versus 3bet). Do we want still 3bet him or we just flat because we have better IO postflop if he will hit 2nd best hand for example AJo on Jxx flop? What is the best +EV line here?
@ThePokerBank
@ThePokerBank 10 лет назад
If you flat, would the players behind you squeeze? If the CO folds a ton, have you been 3betting him relentlessly? If so, do we need to make sure our 3bet range has some actual weight in it now?

@McGavel1

+McGavel1 Also good point about only 3-betting for profit, either now or later, rather than just throwing chips around for the heck of it.
@McGavel1
@McGavel1 8 лет назад
+McGavel1 Cool point about not killing a good 3bet by then putting out a janky Cbet if the 3-bet was for outright profit because you thought the villain would fold.
@McGavel1
@McGavel1 8 лет назад
+McGavel1 Cuz a lot of people do just Cbet 100% of the time for no reason when they have 3bet. What a great type of player to trap when out of position on them by checking to them when you smash a flop.

@chriswilson1968 8 лет назад
+icyboy771z That's bad set mining....Cosidering you only have a 12% chance of hitting your set you should usually fold all your small and mid pairs to a decent raise and definitely to a 3 bet...

Chris Wilson I think that decision should remain relative to the stacks involved. If you're dealing with two deep stacks and it's not tournament play, sometimes that 12% chance is worth seeing the flop. In my opinion the odds of outs are definitely important but in order to truly maximize your winnings it is also important to take into consideration the potential value of what that set would bring you vs your potential damage from missing relative to your stack. Also player position can definitely play a role in the decision. Say someone 3 bets, coming in over the top of a raise equal to 2bb. Say when all is said and done the 3 bet was worth about 3bb. If you've got 10bb, the potential damage to your stack in case of a miss is significantly worse than if you had a 100bb stack. Additionally if you do have a smaller pocket pair and decide to see the flop and actually DO connect on a set, your opponents generally wouldn't be assuming you're sitting on a low set. This can also be used effectively in post flop play. I think it's truly an important skill to allow yourself some variance from playing strictly by odds. But to be effective you have to have a firm handle on what investments you can afford to lose to whatever odds are currently in play. Since the probable value of hands are fluid and change rather drastically, logically speaking, you're only limiting yourself by strictly playing premier pre-flop hands. Just my opinion, obviously.
@Veaseify
@Veaseify 8 лет назад
In the first example if you fold every time you miss (88 out of 100) you are going to have to make 265 bb's from the 12 times you hit in order for it to be +ev. If you can stack somebody twice then you only need to get 65bb's from the other 10 times you hit. Although it seems like raising small pairs in early position is just a continuous raise/fold situation, in reality most people probably come out ahead on this. Of course if you are running so bad that you hit constant set over set hands then you aren't going to make anything doing this! But in theory.....

Thanks Paolo! It takes a really large sample size (often times 1k+ hands) to even use a 4bet %, especially at full ring. But think about a 4bet % compared to their opening range to get an idea on how wide they are really 4betting =)

@McGavel1
@McGavel1 8 лет назад
+McGavel1 I mean, because you're already only stealing vs people who you think will fold preflop or on the flop. That would make sense to send the same message for a slight discount. If a villain defender requires a huge preflop raise to steal from them, I guess that's not really the person to steal against anyways so maybe I answered my own question but anything you might want to add I would love to hear if you happen to see this, thanks.

33M16SEC. I will highly argue where you state "that's where my money comes from" for you are correct in one of the steps. However, the final step is taking your fiat currency that you won by being a good player and then turning it into gold and/or silver for calling fiat debt notes (or dollars/yens/euro's etc) money is lying based on what the definition of money is. What highly surprises me is how many poker players have not taken time to research how the noun we call "money" is created and then determine if the powers that be are bluffing or not

no offense, but when you spend more than 7 minutes trying to explain what to do with pocket 4's, throwing in terms like EV, flatting, C-bet, etc, etc, it makes me wonder just who are you making these videos for? seriously. all the mumbo jumbo lingo doesnt help. pretty much the only question that needs to be asked is: if i get involved in early position with this hand can i call a raise? if you cant, or more likely would not, then fold it. all the lingo in the world wont change anything.
@ThePokerBank
@ThePokerBank 10 лет назад
But you can't fully understand which line to take without understanding the underlying concepts. 7 minutes on a decision with 44 seems silly to someone with a solid understanding of fundamentals, but it might be exactly what someone newer to the game needs. That being said, SplitSuit does use a ton of poker jargon, yes

cmentd, your comment is BS. Everyone beginner with half a braincell interested in Poker should be able to understand this. If one doesn't what the hell is one trying to archive playing poker? And yes EV is a term widly used outside of poker, e.g. Gametheory (sounds like gaming, does actually belong to oeconomics)
