Must see locations and hidden gems, join us on an adventure of a lifetime as we drive our camper van around Iceland on the Ring Road making stops in the Highlands and West Fjords as well. I tried to create a blend of cinematic/documentary style footage mixed with useful information to help guide your next trip to the Land of Fire and Ice showing the best attractions and places to visit. This was a special trip for us as I surprised my then girlfriend with a engagement ring and proposal.

Your video is outstanding. The extreme beauty of Iceland is not well enough known. You couldn't have done a better job of planning this trip. I realize you didn't get to see everything you wanted, but good for you for planning a return trip. You managed to have very good weather. Really appreciate the kind words! Yah I definitely wanted a dreamy somber vibe and I think I got that. I used a DJI Mini 2 for the shots. I highly recommend it. As of now they have the DJI mini 4 so its got some good improvements but at a much higher price point. Any of the DJI Mini drones is a good starter drone that is super easy to use and fly. If you have the money I'd recommend getting the newest one but if not the 2 and 3 are really good! Thanks again!! All the best.

4700 for 11 days? That's crazy, I paid 800 booking in the same day for 16 days + lost 300 on an extra insurance because i didn't had a credit card. Not 4x4 though but the roads you showed don't seem to need it. The one to Godaffoss was horror but it was one of the most interesting if i look back, it felt like was in a movie.
@adventurerice
@adventurerice 8 месяцев назад
For me, it was just as COVID was getting over so I think the prices were definitely inflated but I also noticed the price difference between 4x4 and regular camper vans to be a huge difference. In addition, not sure if you booked a camper van or a regular car but that difference is huge as well. I would say that 70% of the roads I drove on did not require a 4x4 but I still think all the F-roads that require 4x4 cars by law to be by far the best locations. Without a 4x4 you wouldn't be able to see those spots. If you are looking for a 4x4 camper van then I think the price is still what it costs now. Kudos to you if you got even just a camper van for 16 days on 800 CAD because thats a steal.

Great video, enjoyed it immensely. Just one factual error. Svalvogavegur is not the road depicted in the video and according to the map is not the one you took. It lies along the coast from Þingeyri out along the peninsula and then into Arnarfjörður. You have to time your trip with the tide as parts of the road is in a tidal area. And I would use a better equpped vehicle than the campervan, even if it is a 4x4. Other than this small error, then this is a great video and should be used as a template for tourists coming here to visit. Many congratulations on your engagement! Hope your make a return visit on future anniversaries!

Beautiful video! CONGRATULATIONS 🍾! i’ve been to Iceland once but based in Reykjavík, would you suggest staying in the West Fard or staying in the south I like to hike be in the Hot Springs and just generally out in nature one day in the capital is enough for me
@adventurerice
@adventurerice 28 дней назад
Thank you for the amazing comments ! 😁😁 In terms of your questions, I think if you want the best hiking experiences, I would say the Highlands are amazing as there are few people and amazing views with untouched nature. However, it may not be as accessible. With that in mind comparing the West Fjords and the south, I would say stick to the south as it has more accessible and marked hiking trails as well as more known hot springs. The south east area of the island definitely has less crowds with amazing places to see as well. The West fjords are amazing as well but things are further apart and may not have as many marked/well known trails/hot springs. But it will definitely have less crowds. Hope that helped!

My dream trip. I’m still trying to plan my trip. I thought a cruise at first but you really don’t get to see much. But I’m nervous about driving. My husband and I are much for camping. So I need to take that into consideration. Are there many places to stay along the routes you took? Fantastic video!
@adventurerice
@adventurerice 4 месяца назад
Thanks for your kind comments!! I would highly recommend a road trip around Iceland! Explore on your own schedule and much more freedom! In terms of campsites, I wouldn't say there were many I would see along the routes but that's mainly due to the lower population in Iceland (Compared to North America). I linked a Google map in the description showing all the campsites in Iceland so I would plan a general route using those! Airbnb's would be another option but I found them to be expensive.

Wow, your Iceland video and the briefs of the places you visited are most interesting and informative. Great job! I noticed you drove the campervan you hired to the F-roads/highlands. Are campervans allowed to be driven to the highlands? I thought only 4WD are allowed.
@adventurerice
@adventurerice 9 месяцев назад
Thanks alot! I wanted to give as much info as I can and detail that other videos didn't put! In terms of your question, yes! Campervans are allowed in the highlands but they just need to be a 4WD version. Rental companies will have campervans to rent that are designated as 2WD and 4WD so just make sure you get the right one. If you do go into the highlands for long periods of time I would recommend vans equipped for river crossings.

Lovely and informative video and beautiful proposal. What did you guys do for meals and if you had to choose, which stop would you have skipped or was underwhelming?
@adventurerice
@adventurerice 3 месяца назад
Thanks for the kind words!! :) For meals, we bought some groceries at the supermarket and cooked in the van and at camp sites! The van rental came with a portable butane stove so we used that alot as well as any cold cut sandwiches. Otherwise making simple meals like stews and pastas! The yogurt in Iceland was super super tasty! In terms of stops to skip, we felt Gulfoss was definitely underwhelming as it was super busy and alot of the other waterfalls were just as cool with less people! If you are tight on time, I also would skip the Geysir and Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft.

This was a beautiful vlog. Well done! I visited Iceland in 2016 on a solo campervan trip and loved it so much, I'm planning a trip in June 2025 with my daughter and dad. I really enjoyed seeing your drone shots, and I'm happy to know I can get such good quality from the one you used and not break the bank. I did the Golden Circle and the southern coast, so my favorite part was Dyrhólaey. This time, we plan to go further into the Eastfjords. We wanted to stop at Diamond Beach and come back, but is there anything further north on that coast that you would say is a "must not miss"? Also, are there toll tunnels on the way? Thanks!

Thanks so much for your nice words it means alot!! I'm sure your family will love Iceland 😊😊 yah especially now I'm sure the drones are even better! In terms of things in the east we definitely LOVED Voks Baths which was really luxurious and relaxing! We never encountered any toll tunnels through our trip.

Thank you!!! Really appreciate the love, I put alot of work so it means the world that you liked it.❤ Between April and Oct, I would recommend April as it does give you more daylight. It is cold but the hot springs will be that much better! In terms of seeing the lights I think your chances are fairly equal but I can't say with confidence. The only thing would be to see what trail and road conditions are like in April. I know alot of roads and trails close with colder and snowy conditions so I would double check the main sites you want to see.

It depends on the locations you would like to visit but I would say it is required at the bare minimum a waterproof jacket. It does rain pretty often in Iceland and weather can change really quickly. So it is always a good call to have a waterproof layer as you wouldn't want to be caught in the rain halfway through a hike. In addition, alot of the waterfalls will soak you once you get close enough and you often need to get a lot closer to really take it all in. In regards to a poncho, I think they could be okay but with windy conditions it could be an issue. I think a wind proof layer would also be recommended as in some areas it was really really windy! Especially in higher areas such as hikes in the highlands. Lastly, I think waterproof boots are not an absolute need but again this depends on your activities, some areas I had to step through a small river, or areas got really muddy so I was glad to have them for that and for rain. I would also consider the fact that if you dont own waterproof footwear and they get soaked, you would need to have space to pack a back up piece of footwear. To note, the trip I took in this video we were really lucky to have clear skies for the majority of the trip which was really uncommon. So my first hand experience could be a little skewed.

@@adventurerice Thanks a lot for your answer! We don't plan to go to the Highlands, just south until the glacier lagoon at furthest. Glad you got good weather for your trip! :)

Beautiful video with such good scenic shots! Loved the music along with it. I'm planning to go to Iceland with my girlfriend at the end of October. Currently we aim to do a 'basic' route Reykjavík to Vík (including Golden Circle) and back by 2x2 rental and stay at guesthouses in towns. Anyone got any more tips where to go seeing as it's only a very small portion of Iceland? And how safe is it to drive like an hour or two in the dark after sunset? I got quite a couple waterfalls on my route right now, but I feel like it may get 'boring' if it's too many of them? These are: Gullfoss, Seljalandsfoss, Gljúfrabúi, Skógafoss and Kvernufoss. Are all worth visiting and are they diverse enough? And is it worth going to Silfra tectonic plates if we don't plan on snorkeling or diving?

My daughter and I did that itinerary last November. So much of the driving was dark and it was fine. The only trouble I had was between Akranes and northern Reykjavik. The striping on the road was worn off yet the local traffic all knew where it was supposed to be and they were going much faster than I was comfortable with. Ultimately we were fine. I would highly recommend Thingvellir National Park. Walking between 2 continental plates is really cool. Be sure to make the drive to Diamond Beach as a day trip from Vik. We did the boats at Jökulsárlón too. It was our first time so close to icebergs. My photos are amazing. At Seljalandsfoss there is another falls to the left. Be sure to see them. We didn’t do the last bit up to those falls because of the weather. We were disappointed but will definitely see them next time. No matter what you do it will be amazing. So much of the experience is Iceland’s vastness, rugged beauty and isolation. Be sure to take time to be still and discover what you see, hear, feel. It gets in your soul. Start planning your next, next trip!

@@choosewisely616 Hey! Thanks for your reply. Good to know that driving in the dark is ok. That sounds not great, but glad you were ok! I did read about Diamond Beach and watch a video but to me it doesn't look tooo appealing yet. But the glacier lake next to it is really great from what I can read so it'd basically be 2 things in 1 I guess. Only thing is that the drive is rather long back and forth and we only go 7 days. Not sure if its worth then. How highly would you recommend it? Is the drive from Vík to there also good? Might have to rethink if its a must see. Thanks in advance!

@@futurism7131 I think it’s all about the experience you’re looking for. Diamond Beach was a ‘must do’ for us and it’s a very popular bus tour from Reykjavik. When we were there mid November, the beach was loaded with baby bergs. We live on a tropical island 🏝️ so it was the most opposite experience we could have and it was fantastic! It is 5 hours of driving plus stops/activities from Vik. The landscape is otherworldly and there are glaciers to see too. In November the sunset/sunrise was 2 hours long so the colors and changing sky was also a feature. We were balancing our daytime activities with aurora hunting at night so we didn’t make any of the stops along the way that day. One note about driving; most of the country is 2 lane undivided highway with no shoulder. Just be aware of oncoming cars and drive defensively, day or night. We did allow 2 nights in Vik so we could make that trip. I highly recommend it but if it’s not your thing then you will certainly have other fantastic experiences. Feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

@@choosewisely616 Oh yeah that makes sense since it's like complete opposite for you! I tried to squeeze it in now by cutting a day off Reykjavík, seeing as it will be a great route to drive aswell. Do you have any tips for locations for watching the Aurora, like with scenic backgrounds, around Vík? Thanks for the tip about the driving. What clothing did you bring? Safetravel website says to wear 3 layers, no cotton, water and windproof etc. haha

@@futurism7131 Don’t know how long you’re planning in Reykjavik but you can see it thoroughly in 2 solid days. If you are planning day trips then add to that. Sky Lagoon was wonderful, we went after dark which was really cool. The Aurora are weather dependent also and Vik didn’t work for us. Most people go to the beach (town side, not basalt pillars) or up to the church - you can’t miss it. We saw the Aurora in Reykholt on the Golden Circle. We stayed at the Blue Hotel which was really great. Fridheimar is right next door- hint, hint (book now if you are interested). We did dress just as recommended, plus hats, scarves and gloves. It hovered around freezing during our trip (November). Not wanting to invest a fortune in clothes we can’t wear much we found great things on eBay and Amazon. A 3-in-1 coat is a must. The outer layer can be zipped off on warmer, dry days. We purchased thermal layers from 32 Degrees. They are inexpensive but comfortable and did a great job. We also had fleece lined snow pants, snow (waterproof) leggings and my daughter wore jeans with a thermal layer on dry days only. The day you visit Skogafoss you will want to be completely waterproof. The spray will soak you 2-300 yards before you get up close. It’s totally visible from a distance but you don’t feel the power of it. We had loads of fun exploring the area while being very comfortable. The thing about jeans is they don’t dry quickly enough so wear them wisely. In case you haven’t found it yet the Iceland Meteorological Office website is the best resource for weather and Aurora forecasts. In Vik we ate at The Soup Company and Blackcrust Pizza. Both were super yummy. 😋

Hello! Between Day 10 and Day 11, you mentioned doing a quick drive from Rauðisandur to Reykjavik of 2 hours. Was that a typo ? Google maps says it's more like a 5 hours drive. I am trying to plan my West Coast itinerary and I noticed that big gap.
@adventurerice
@adventurerice 15 дней назад
I may have misspoke in the video but the approximate 2 hours is from our campsite for the night which was just outside of the West Fjords (Búðardalur tjaldsvæði), to Reykjavik. I think it was about 3 hours to this campsite from Raudisandur which adds up to the 5 hours.

Great video and congratulations! One thing I would say is that the dangerous parts of Road 622 are the portion that follow the peninsula all the way around. It's pretty intense in places! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_elO-7bs7LQ.htmlsi=KmbVZk6fkfNa8lNK This video shows it really well starting around minute 12. And there is part where the road is under water at certain tides and carved below a cliff.

Do you need a permit to fly a drone?
@adventurerice
@adventurerice Месяц назад
In 2022 there were drone laws for drones greater than a specific weight. I had the DJI Mini 2 which was below this threshold so I did not require a permit. However, there are still areas in Iceland that did not permit them (visible by signs at the location saying "No Drones.") Things could have potentially changed after 2 years but I still believe if you have the smaller drones you don't need a permit.

Nice video. How about the Gas for the van? are they any gas stations while traveling along the ring road?
@adventurerice
@adventurerice 9 месяцев назад
Hi! thank you for the comment!!!! In terms of gas stations, it would depend on the region, in the southern areas of the ring road there were many stations as there were many small towns along the road. As you go further north and into the mountains there arn't as many. In these more sparse areas (north Iceland, West Fjords and highlands) I would always fill up when I see any station if I am 3/4 full or less, just to be on the safe side I never came close to running out of gas so as long as you fill up before entering long isolated stretches of road, you should be good!
