Welcome back to Part 3 of our 8-Part series on “How To Plan & Write A Series”. Today’s video is a long one, but it’s separated into two parts.
First, I am answering some common questions on series planning like how much do you need to plan ahead of time and how do you know if you have a big enough idea for a series? I also give you an inside look at my own process of writing and planning a series.
The second half of the video is a walkthrough of my free “How To Plan & Write A Series” Workbook, but even if you don’t download the workbook, this will hopefully give you a really good idea for how to plan out your series.

Interestingly, The Lord of the Rings started out as one book. For obvious reasons, the publisher broke it into 3 books. Can you even imagine? lol

That's definitely me. I was planning one book, and it has expanded into a series that's a mixture of dynamic and standalones totaling 15 books. I'm finally writing the first book.

Most of my preparation for writing my series has actually been the setting. Off and on in my spare time over 17 years I've been designing a planet as scientifically possible as I could. The primary maps I've done are terrain, climate, ocean currents, tectonic plates, vegetation, elevation, primary rivers and lakes system, volcanic zones, hurricane tracks and where tornado allies could occur, population density; political boundaries map that includes regional powers, allies, and vassal States; basic trade systems and trade routes, map of human migration across my planet with projected populations in different time periods, a timeline of the major technological and societal developments of my planet's history up to where my first book begins, basic flora and fauna templates for a given climate in a given region, stuff like that. Yeah, so it can get pretty crazy. I'm just happy I'm actually writing my books now. I'm 34 years old, that's not terrible in my opinion. I wasn't actually considering having the goal of writing books to be published until last year, so before that I was taking my time with it simply as a hobby.

I know I'm not the creature of this video but I too have wrote a book with many different POVs. (I have 5 in book one) Something that I found that helped me is to give each character some sort of quirk or tone that way you know specifically who is talking. Not only that but if gives character traits and development. :) For example maybe one character talks to themselves a lot and maybe another character acts nice on the outside but in their thoughts they actually hate someone or whatever you want. Idk if this was helpful at all but I tried lol.

I get why you'd use Lord of the Rings as your example because it's so well known, but from someone who's studied Tolkien as part of their degree I'd just like to mention that the Lord of the Rings was actually meant to be one book and not a series. They were only published in three volumes because of the sheer length of the story. You could try and find a solid beginning, middle, and end of each of the three books, but really they make the most sense as one whole thing. Still, I understand what you were saying with your examples and find this video super helpful. Can't wait to watch the rest of the series.

i have written 5 plans for this series in progress and I always diverge. I have this issue in games too I see where the main plot is and get bored and go , "nope where are those side quest at!" I can relate to the entire if one thing changes i have to change it all! I've spent 3 years discovering my characters and world again and again I'm now lost in what is going on for the latest plan but it's fine I'm learning what they like, don't, and who they trust and don't now.

Great advice! I feel like most readers can tell when a writer is writing something they love vs. a writer thinking they're writing something to make a quick buck...I personally don't think it's worth the time and energy to write something you're not in love with and excited to sit down and write. You will be the only person reading your book for a very long time (drafts, edits, etc). Make sure it's something you want to spend time with!

Lord of the Rings is ONE book, the editor told tolkien it had too many pages and it would be hard to sell, the price point would be too high for "childrens literature" so he made tolkien devide the book in 3 parts. But it was originally planned as ONE volume. At the time fantasy and YA was not a thing, Tolkien was the first.

14:30 Same here. I start--even a book, not just a series--with a basic idea or three of things I expect that book to be about. Some parts I'm sure of, and some I just kind of block in. Then, if something feels boring or awkward, I have to rethink that idea. I had to rewrite a chapter from a different perspective, and something entirely different happened. One chapter morphed into four.

Loved this video. I’ve written two series that I was able to keep control of (they didn’t run amok) because of good professional editing... but I can already see how pages of the workbook will help me be better organized going into the next series. Not only a better crafted series but helps with editing budget. Quick question: I’m also going to have a reader magnet for the series- a novella about 40,000 words. How would you incorporate it into story arc-breadcrumb-character arc sections? It’s an historical mystery episodic series and the novella will be stand alone. Same recurring characters and setting, but probably not a mystery, or at least not a big one. Perhaps an element of backstory or something like that.

Sarra, since you write in both New Adult and YA categories, did you ever find it difficult to market to the same mailing list? Sometimes, covers for both those genres can look a little similar (since we both write in fantasy). I ask because my current series is NA, but my next long series, I'm finding it would fit more for YA. I don't want to disappoint any one category who might run into a more "risque" scene if they go back and pick up my first series.

It sounds like an amazing start to a great series idea. I definitely think that can work from Multiple POV. It will come down to the conflict. I would personally say start thinking about the conflict in terms of a smaller conflict in each book that leads up to a much bigger overarching conflict for the series. Then with Multiple POV, it's about figuring out why each character has an important role in defeating that conflict.
