haha thanks! no such thing as gpa boosters BUTTTTT anth100 (i took it and it was pretty good), soci102 (i took this as well and it was not bad), phil102 (i liked this) + try some new courses that you've never taken before! good luck!!
Hi Manny, I'm coming to UBC this fall for my graduate studies, can you get to me through through email baffourboamah.bb@gmail.com. I need you to help me out on course schedule and registration please. Thanks so much in advance
Hey!! I just found your channel and it helped me a looot! This year i´ll start my first year in BA and i know that i want to major in psychology, but i really confused abt the requirements i need to fill. I was planning on taking ENGL 109, PSYO 121, PSYO 111, STAT 121 and GWST 100.... do u think it´s okay?? Thank uuu so much in advance!!
Hey!! I'm also gonna start my first year in BA and I'm also planning to major in Psychology. I'm glad I'm not the only one confused! Are you planning on taking the CAP or Arts One Program?
Hi Manny! I'm going into UBC for a BA and struggling to understand the requirements for psych. What are the upper level reqs and the outside reqs? Are they electives? And the Arts Credit???
Hii! I really like your video!! It helped tons!!! Just wondering if I want to go into psyc mayjor, would you recommend doing psyc101 and psyc102 in the same term? (or spread them evenly into two terms would be better for the workload?) For first year level arts student, is it possible to take ASIA 382?
hey! personally it doesn't really matter if you take 101 and 102 together; they're pretty separate in terms of concepts/material. I would just be concerned about the workload of your semester! You'll have to check the pre-reqs for the upper level courses, but as long as there are no restrictions, you should be fine!
I am a first year that has to register my courses soon. My question is @ 3:28, didn't you have issues with that timetable since you had courses back to back? if you have a class that ends at 10, and then right after another class that starts at 10 how can you walk between buildings and arrive on time. I'm asking because i am trying to build my schedule with all of my courses with spaces in between to cater for walking, but it is difficult to do.
Gabby Wonka hey! so classes actually end 10 mins before their listed time. so if you have a class that says it goes from 9-10, it actually goes from 9-9:50, so that you have 10 mins to walk to class! same with tues thurs classes (8-9:30 is actually 8-9:20). that being said, you still need to coordinate the buildings to ensure you make it to class on time! some buildings are more than 10 mins away
Hi!! I really like this video bcz I still have a hard time scheduling courses. Which psychology courses should I take in my sophomore psychology major? Is it okay to take only PSYC 217 and 218 in second year? And any literature requirement courses you recommend?
Hi Manny, thanks for your informational video. This courses selecting seems pretty easy for you, though it troubles me a lot as a freshman. And I notice you had taken commerce class, how did you manage that as an art student?? (asking because I am in the same situation)
thank you! and course planning definitely takes a bit of brainstorming; this schedule wasn't actually my real schedule so i wasn't as adamant about putting it together perfectly. i took comm100 in my second semester! it's commerce for non-commerce students so its meant for anyone who isn't in the BComm program. i loved that course and thought it was a great intro class to the world of commerce and business! it wasn't too much work, just make sure you're up to date with your readings and assignments. otherwise it should be fine!
Manny Li ok I see thank you! What you said really reminds me to customise my own schedule and also drop the 9am class because I am not a typical morning person lol. However I am wondering will you recommend to register in soci 102 with no basis learning in soci100or101 ?
Hi Manny! For the writing and research requirement which one do you think/heard was the easiest ENGL 112 ,WRDS 150 , ENGL 100 or CAP’s ASTU100 or ASTU 11? What prof would you prefer? Which prof would you recommend for MATH 104 and all PSY classes ? What are your thoughts on CAP’s individual and sociaty which combine psy and econ ? I am sorry I know I asked a lot of questions but I am so frustrated while doing my timetable. I really need your help :)
hey! i haven't really heard much about caps options for the writing requirement, but I think out of engl 112, wrds 150, and engl 100, wrds 150 is the most writing based. The engl courses are more focused on literature rather than focusing on writing academic papers like in wrds 150. there are a ton of wrds 150 profs so just try to look at ratings on ratemyprof if you want some reviews/recommendations. each wrds 150 class will also focus on a different topic (ie. my class focused on homelessness in vancouver) so that's also something to think about! for psyc courses, darko odic is a great option for intro psyc. i also had steven barnes (but online class) and enjoyed his class a lot! other profs i've liked in the psyc department include david king and lillian may :) i haven't really looked into cap options as I wanted to make more of a custom timetable. but from what i know, a lot of the cap timetables get good profs for their courses and it's a great way to meet new people! hope this helped!! my best tip would be to look at ratemyprof to see which profs are good as there are a ton of students who write there! don't take the ratemyprof ratings to a T though, as some can be biased!!
Hey, I am an incoming freshman and a finance enthusiast. I intend to specialize in either finance or accounting. Which non-commerce electives do you suggest to opt for?
To be honest, for electives, I would just recommend whatever you are interested in. Electives are a great opportunity to broaden your interests and academic experience :)
Hi Manny! I was just wondering: if I know that I want my major to be Psychology - then, for first year, would I just have to take Psych 101 and 102 and then just fill the rest of my course load with anything I want?? Or are there other specific psych (or psych-related) courses i should take for first year?
hey! yes that sounds right! all the other classes you'd take would be electives, arts requirements (ie. wrds 150), or other requirements for your minor if you want one!
I wonder if you need gap between every courses to move from building to building or class to class? Or the class finishes a bit early to let you go to another class? and also i wonder if I can take math or economics even though i am a faculty of art student?
certain classes/faculties stick to required class averages; therefore, there may be some grade deflation/inflation. for the most part i don't think it is extremely competitive, but of course students have to work for their own opportunities and nothing is handed to them.
Hey !! Did you take EOSC 111 along with EOSC 114 as well ? On the website it says that it is a recommended co-requisite but I don't know if I should take it or not because I am taking EOSC 114 just to fulfil my science req .
Hi, I was just planing to take EOSC 114, but you mentioned it was actually hard in the video, how hard is that or is there any recommendation to satisfy the science requirement?
most of the assessments were writing based (essays, midterms were all short/long answer), so keep that in mind. of course it depends on the prof you have and the class you're in. i'd say the actual content and learning isn't too difficult because it is very concept-based (ie. debating the morality of terrorism) based on different readings and philosophers! good luck!
Thank you for replying! I'm going into my first year at UBC and I did my planning. I only put required courses on my timetable, but it looks too intense. Can you tell me what I might be doing wrong? I have 5 for the first term, and 5 for the second term. But because of all the biology and chemistry classes, there are labs I have to take. That would be more than 5 in a term including the labs. If I were to drop a class, then that would not be enough credits. Is it normal to have 5 classes and a few labs in a term?
hey! can't exactly recommend any since I haven't taken any of my lit courses yet (im taking them this year). take the ones you're interested in! im taking phil 375 and cens 202 cause those are the most interesting to me
Hi! I need to fill my science requirements as an Arts student in an incoming year one student, and I was wondering if you could recommend any easier science courses. I was planning to take EOSC 114 as one of my classes, but it sounds pretty hard... I also noticed that you took GEOG 121 in your first year. Was it a good course to take?
one of my friends took eosc 114 last year... she said it was a lot of reading and stuff, but i think it's definitely one of the easier science requirements! look into atsc113 as well! many of my friends took that one and i've heard it's pretty easy (but it's boring). i didn't really like geog 121 haha... i think it was just cause it was different from what i expected to learn, and i didn't really like the course content!
Hi Manny~ I'm transferring to UBC from a local college. Do you know what's the course load for second year psyc student? I heard you say 27 credit to move up a year, does that mean I'm looking at 9 course in total per year?
Hey! yes 9 courses minimum to move up to third year :) for 2nd year psyc students the only REQUIREMENT is taking psyc 217/218. other than that, you can take different psyc 200/300 level courses to fulfill major requirements, or other arts degree requirements (ie. literature requirement, writing requirement, language requirement, etc.). just as an example, this year im taking: for my major: psyc 217, psyc 218, psyc 305, psyc 308, psyc 302, psyc 315 for my minor: econ 101, econ 102 for literature requirement: phil 375, cens 202 good luck!
@@TheMannyli Thank you, Manny! This is sooooo helpful! Now I have a general idea of what to expect in UBC :) I guess I'll take 10 courses per year in order to graduate on time lol
