This video covers alfalfa as food plot for whitetail deer hunting. Alfalfa is great summer food source for bucks and doe. It is a perennial that when done correctly can last 3-5 years. It has amazing pulling power of whitetail deer as they absolutely love alfalfa. Watch the video and learn exactly how to make your own alfalfa food plot.

Great video. My experience is just what you’ve described. I’ve also heard of people over seeding with brassicas or oats for additional fall attraction (which does wane with alfalfa alone). On quick note, in the past RR alfalfa requires your signature and it clearly prohibits its use for wildlife food plots. Perhaps that has changed

So probably not a plot for a long distance plotter. Sadly I have a few wet spots. I need screen and food in the middle. Great content. I’m not getting any work done watching you. Will be trying something in southern Ohio. Thank you

@diyfoodplotpro What I am going to do is take this entire growing season and the winter to get the soil amended for an Alfafa planting next spring. As well as write down the management steps and steps that need to go on a calendar. Then next year I will be prepared to manage Alafafa. I'm going to plant 1 1/2 acres of Alfafa divided up by switch, leading to my 2 acres of beans divided by switch, leading to my 2 acres of beans and corn mix.

We frost seed Alfalfa every winter into chicory and clover. Haven't had much luck with just pure Alfalfa.

I like a pure stand, I plant it in mid august here, they will hit it that fall, but the following spring is when it really goes crazy. They will hammer alfalfa stating early spring all the way untill early fall, until it basically stops growing for the year….management intensive, and expensive but boy it’s a darn good plot in our neck of the woods.

@@DIYfoodplotpro I have found that Annuals work almost as well and are better at suppression of weed growth Mares tail always takes over the Alfalfa here in fall even though it is maintained, Mares tail and butter cup are the Enemies of Alfalfa here. The best way to control them is a rotation of annuals that strangle them out, Alfalfa is very subseptible to 24d but with annuals you can use 24D to kill Mares tail and Butter cup seeds before planting.

Do you see the deer needing time to get used to it like brassica or do they seem to eat it when first introduced?

In our area they flocked to it as soon as it started coming up. It’s amazing how many deer that plot will pull to the area. As far as a early spring, summer, and fall food source it’s as good as they come. But we don’t have hardly any around here, very few acres are planted in alfalfa for food plots of hay production

Always wanted to plant Alfalfa plot live in just north of central Arkansas was Always told it wont live tried it. But with your tips and attention to detail i want to try it. Just planted a spring mix has Alfalfa in it so does that mean it wont live if i plant it this fall because of that autotoxicity?

Hey Bob, thanks for watching really appreciate it. Alfalfa can be really tough to grow if soil conditions aren’t correct. You just have to be 100% pro active on your fertilizer needs and the major one is the Ph needs….soil ph has to be right at 7…and the other major thing with alfalfa is it needs to be on soils that drain…it doesn’t tolerate soils that don’t drain. To be 100% honest with you, I don’t know the answer to your question and I’m not going to lie about…I’ve never been in that situation that you are in. I’ve always seeded my pure stands of alfalfa in the late summer. From what I’ve read auto toxicity takes a while to build up in the soil. What percentage of alfalfa did your mix have?

Wonder how it does in northern Wisconsin, Michigan?

Honestly I am not sure, and I’m not gonna lie to just give you an answer. However I believe they make more cold tolerant varieties. I will try to find you an answer! Thanks for watching!

Will DeerGro work for the nutrients instead of p&k?
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro Год назад
Alfalfa is extremely particular to low amounts of p and k. I’ve never done a side by side comparison with deer gro vs bagged fertilizer but as expensive as alfalfa cost to produce I probably would go with bagged fertilizer. Thanks for watching

Why are the deer not interested in my Alfalfa? Got the soil right.

They will start hitting it early next spring at green up. They Don’t hit it much this time of the year when it’s getting established.
