How to plant a banana tree without much water in the dry seasons?
Some points to remember when digging out a new banana plant
when you dig out a young banana shoot, make sure you dig out as much soil around it
also keep the roots of the plant as intact as possible.
When digging a new hole dig
make it big, atleast 40x40 or 50x50 and about 30 - 40cm deep
with a watering can pour in enough water so you can make a slushy muddy pit
the mud has to be wet enough that when you place the new banana tree into it, the root ball should be covered with the muddy water.
When covering up
you can sprinkle a few hands full of aged cow manure(6 months atleast) if you want
Now cover the hole up with the soil you took out (it should be dry)
step close to the stem of the banana tree you planted, to make sure that everything is firm. It will surely feel a little mushy underneath.
and finally chop off the top off the banana to prevent water loss
water the banana tree well for the first time.
take the chopped leaf and top stem and chop them further to put on the base of the planted banana
add more leaf cover to prevent the solid from drying out. (IMPORTANT - the more you add, the better, it will ensure that the soil underneath stays moist)
Once you have planted the tree, some Banana tree care tips:
you need to water the banana only once every 2 weeks.
It's very common that many of us live in areas that we can do farming in but have to depend on the weather for water. Basically what that means is, we dont have water access on this specific site, or you are not able to get an irrigation line all the way.
Worry not, this method of banana planting will help ensure that atleast your banana trees will survive the summer, until it can get some rain. In most of the tropics, bananas are planted by digging out a young banana shoot which is growing on the side of a mother plant. The plant is then planted at another site, and watered a little heavily for the first few weeks, so that it can establish itself.
This initial phase of watering can be a little difficult, and many of us have to manually water the banana with watering cans. At the OurLand reserve where we practice agroforestry, we usually plants in sites inside the jungle, where a water pipe is not always accessible, or sometimes can only be setup once, but takes a lot of work.
