We show you how to use a section of waterlily from a mature plant and repot it into a basket. We use a piece of rhizome with a growing tip and some roots, a mesh basket, clay-based aquatic soil and an XL feed ball of aquatic plant nutrients.
Start by trimming the long, thick aquatic roots to 15cm/6" and remove the long leaves and their stems. Leave the thin fibrous roots and leaves that are on short stems and still furled.
Add the clay soil to the basket to start so the rhizome piece sits central on a mound of compost with roots spaced out around the basket. Add a Feed Ball for aquatic plants to the compost near the roots. Add more soil to fill around and press down firmly.
Initially place the basket in a position in the water so the top of the basket is 3"/7cm under water level. By Autumn this should be lowered deeper so that the top of the basket is well below ice level for protection in Winter.
