This is so beautiful! Almost nostalgic to me of my childhood with flowers growing along our picket fence in front of our two story farm house. We would get all kinds of bees and butterflies. Going to probably do this again but also want to plant some milkweed, it’s been YEARS since I’ve seen a monarch butterfly; I recently found out that they’re now on the endangered species list. Makes me sad. Have to save our wildlife people. I remember when I was little we would have monarch butterflies by the hundreds! I use to catch them with my butterfly net my mom got me and would be very gentle and let them go, even had a monarch butterfly caterpillar cage where you could take care of them and watch them eat and grow and become beautiful butterflies and I’d set them all free in our flower gardens. 🐝 🦋 🌸

That seed shaker is a good idea, my only issue comes when you have a variation in seed size. I want to mix a Monarch friendly variety with Black Eyed Susan which are very small. Almost think I’ll need two different shakers. I see your cat was helping tamp down the seeds!
@ThisOhioFarmhouse
@ThisOhioFarmhouse 3 года назад
If you are planting just a couple types of flowers with very different seed sizes I think making a couple different seed shakers would be fine. However, I think this issue is resolved by having a seed mix that has the proper seed portions and holes that allow the largest seeds to pass through. Think of it like salt and pepper. They can have their own shakers for more control, but you can also mix them together in the right ratio in the same shaker. You can experiment by testing your shaker over a sheet of paper until it looks like what you want. Good luck to you 😃

Yes, LOL, our kitties are always there to “help” us out :) I am pretty sure we planted it sometime in May. I think the secret to our success was watering them on a regular basis until they got established. I am curious to see how they look next spring, if they come up as thick and healthy. @ThisOhioFarmhouse
@ThisOhioFarmhouse 3 года назад
I don’t remember exactly when we planted the seed mixture, but it was fairly early and probably not far off from when you planted in April. This video was created in August so it took 3+ months for the whole process. We did pay special attention to watering this area also. Differences in soil, local weather and seed mix will play a part as well. I will say that our wildflowers bloomed much sooner this year. We have been enjoying them since May! They came back just as strong. We will need to do some selective weeding in a few areas and we plan to plant another 1,000 square feet area and expand into other areas. It is our favorite part of the yard😀

@ThisOhioFarmhouse
@ThisOhioFarmhouse Год назад
We wait until after the last frost date (early May here) and then seed them in. The soil needs to be warm enough for them to germinate and they need to be kept continually moist. Planting too late gets a bit tricky because it’s harder to keep things moist and germination won’t be as successful.

Spring and fall are the beat times to plant the seeds. If you plant in spring, you can plant when the soil is able to be cultivated and you have consistent days above freezing. Wildflower seeds will grow when the conditions are right for them and won’t be bothered by the cold. This is how they survive in nature. Just be sure to keep the ground watered until they germinate.

Hi I truly enjoyed your video. Can you please tell me the name of the brand and the bag? I want to try this. I never seem to have luck with the seeds I purchase. Thank you and take care

I used Pennington Midwest Garden Wildflower Seed Mixture, 24 oz bag, from Lowes. It wasn’t on their website however, but you can find it online. Good luck!

Whats a seed swap?

You bring seeds and exchange them for different seeds. Broadens your collection!

I don’t have a tiller. What do you recommend to do without one?

Depends if you have just soil or if there is grass or plant life. Soil, a landscape rake could loosen up the top enough to plant. You could mix in some good compost if you have it available and just break the surface of the soil open and mix in the compost with a rake. If there is anything growing that will all need to be removed first by either pulling or using cardboard to kill it off. You can check out my other video “From Grass to Garden” to see how to do that successfully. Good luck!

I have a question please when they die will they still come up next spring or when ever it is? Thank you 😊

Yes, most of these will come back each year. In fact, some will even spread further out as they drop seeds.

Wow that looked really nice. Are they perennials or just annuals? Also how long did they take to bloom from seeds?
@ThisOhioFarmhouse
@ThisOhioFarmhouse 2 года назад
They are perennials and will mostly return each spring. So far we are seeing some varieties come back stronger than others but they have always come back. It only takes a couple of months, with consistent watering, to get them established and you will start seeing the blooms increase in the weeks following depending on your local conditions.

I assume these flowers reappear again next year ? When they wither, do you wait for a few weeks and cut them off a few cm above the soil ? Or do you just let them be ?
@ThisOhioFarmhouse
@ThisOhioFarmhouse 3 года назад
This was a mix of perennials and annuals so some will come up for sure while some of the annuals might drop their seeds and come up again. We are excited to see what grows this spring! We might also pick up another bag of this mix and reseed. we didn’t cut any of the flowers. We just let them do their thing :-) when the snow melts I will probably go out and just run over what is left and trim it a couple of inches above the ground.

Thank you.... What is the suitable time to fertilize it with npk??
@ThisOhioFarmhouse
@ThisOhioFarmhouse 3 года назад
Apply a fertilizer made especially for flowers after the border is in bloom. Keep things watered also. You really don’t need to do much A wildflower border should be low maintenance : )

What time of year did you do this in?

We planted as soon as the ground had thawed and was workable and warm. For us that’s typically late April-mid May
