Forget digging a hole with a shovel. Get a Mantis little tiller and let it dig the hole. I planted a Gala apple, yesterday, and my Mantis dug the hole three Mantis’wide and three long. I used my Mantis to get most of the soil out of the hole. I did clean up the hole with my shovel and Pulaski, as well as my boys axe to cut roots.

This video is very interesting and informative, thank you. I planted a honey-crisp and a baldwin last year and am looking to plant a variety that will help pollination of the current trees, any suggestions? Also, I live in southern Ontario and was curious as to where you got the 5 variety tree.
@gardentokitchenwgarrycarte3963
Hey Crazy Town.... Any alternate variety of apple or crab apple tree will pollinate your trees. Liberty, Cortland, JerseyMac, MacIntosh are some varieties and certainly any 4 in 1 or 5 in 1 varieties will also do the trick. Most nurseries sell varieties that are ideal for the local climate. I purchased my 5 in 1 variety at Lowes in Ottawa. It was advanced in growth and was very good condition. I paid $120 but it was worth it. It produced 10 apples in its first year after planting. I attribute my success to spraying the trees in early spring. See video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KZ40AEK_G7c.html to see how I do it. I got 2 bushels of apples from my 5-1 tree this year. Good luck with your trees.

Thank you so much ..i have learnt a lot for your video. I think i have shocked or disturbed the root system while transplanting it from pot to ground. The leaves and flowers have dropped, and in a month now the leaves n flowers r drying sadly, any hints and tips you can share please to bring it back to life or is it too late, i have used seaweed and good compost. Thank you

Cool the way you took the plastic out. Not 100% sure about how you secured it for winds - hard to see exactly how you put the small posts. I was going to put two 8-foot, 2x2 stakes a pair of nylons tied to them and the tree to keep it in place.

I’ve learned so much from your video’s! Would you have recommendations on growing cucamelons?
@gardentokitchenwgarrycarte3963
@gardentokitchenwgarrycarte3963 3 года назад
Cucamelon are a very interesting vegetable from Mexico and South America, so they love the heat. I would start them indoors 6 weeks ahead of your last frost in 4" pots or Jiffy 7's to get a root established. They will mature in 60 days and it's best if you trellis them off the ground. You can also grow them in pots. As you probably know, they taste like cukes and citrus, great for summer snacks. If you live in the USA, Johnnys Seeds @ www.johnnyseeds.com/vegetables/cucumbers/specialty-cucumbers/mexican-sour-gherkin-cucumber-seed-3174.html OR CANADA @ www.veseys.com/ca/catalogsearch/result/?q=CUCAMELON Let me know how you make out. thanks for watching.

Don’t you want to “disturb” the roots? They grow in a circle in the bucket and you want them to be able to to spread out? Idk is it still good?

Hello sir. Is buying a top soil necessary? I also bought a fertilizer for an honeycrisp
@gardentokitchenwgarrycarte3963
Hello Godz29, If you have good soil from your garden that would be fine to side dress the new apple tree. So no need to purchase top soil. Today I just planted a new apple tree and I mixed some mushroom compost that I had with some garden soil. Honeycrisp is a great apple., good luck with your tree.Make sure you water it well 1-2 times per week during the first year. thanks for watching.

Are you saying that apple trees only live to be 20? Is that all trees or just 5-1?
@gardentokitchenwgarrycarte3963
@gardentokitchenwgarrycarte3963 5 месяцев назад
Hey Nauer, Yes, standard grafted single varieties usually have a life span of around 20 years - however the 5-1 apparently have a shorter span dependent upon growing conditions. Prior to grafting the big 40 foot trees would last much longer. thanks for watching. have you seen my video on the apple tree guard? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hcdjXMTxxf0.htmlsi=gduNGorI8lcHbDR7

Where can you buy a tree with multiple types of apples?
@gardentokitchenwgarrycarte3963
@gardentokitchenwgarrycarte3963 5 месяцев назад
Hi Sue, If you live in Canada you can find 4-1 and 5-1 varieties at Rona garden centres, Canadian Tire and garden nurseries as well. I recommend you shop early because the sell out quickly. Garry

@gardentokitchenwgarrycarte3963
@gardentokitchenwgarrycarte3963 5 месяцев назад
Hello - your tree will be fine.If the roots are free, just spread them out and cover with soil. Some other methods of planting tree bare root work in a similar fashion. If you use good soil and water them well especially in the first year, the tree will be fine. Garry

but would you not need 2 trees for pollination?
@gardentokitchenwgarrycarte3963
@gardentokitchenwgarrycarte3963 2 года назад
Hi Michael, If your apple tree is one variety (ie. MacIntosh) it would need a another tree of a different variety (ie. Granny Smith) to pollinate. If you have a 5-in1 variety with different varieties grafted on the same tree, another tree is not required for pollination. good luck with your apples.
