Many people are thinking about planting avocado trees. While the process is simple it's a bit more complicated than putting a seed in the ground. Learn the steps we take to grow our trees so you can start growing your own crop of avocados.

I learned about grafting from you...it still amazes me! I love avocados but they tend to give me wicked heartburn, so I eat mangoes almost every day (which are tied as my favorite fruit with grapefruit) to make up for it lol. Being in AZ I probably won't be able to grow either any time, so I'll have to live vicariously through all the great content you share. Great (and funny with the "anise" play on words lol) video as always! Thanks for making RU-vid/Earth a better (and smarter) place.

@@SleepyLizard thanks for the info! Water is pretty scarce right now and we're definitely dealing with drought, it has barely rained at all in over 3 months iirc and our typical monsoon season was very minimal last year and looks to be again. Most of the avocados and mangoes I see in the supermarkets and farmer's markets here come from Mexico. We get some California avocados but I've never seen anything more local sadly, though I might not be looking in the right places. I'm about to move to an area of AZ that is much colder and actually gets a lot of snow and has a pretty active skiing/snowboarding season in the winter so I don't think I'll be growing either anytime soon lol such is life I suppose

Do I need to mix anything into the hole before planting?? I killed 1 plant and I bought another but I’m scared to kill it again! I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Thanks for the vids Mr. Lizard. I have 2 Fantastics about 3', still in 1 gallon pots from the shipper. They are hardened off now. I plan on planting them in a bed up against the house for cold protection in winter. Question: Should I keep moving them up into bigger and bigger pots for a year or two before I plant into the bed or, what size should they be before I plant them in the planter? Can I plant them in the bed now at 3' tall? Thank You, keep up the good work.
@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard 3 года назад
You can plant them in the bed now. However if you plan to hold off a year than yes you absolutely need to go up higher in part size. Take a good look at the roots when you get them out of your pots and if they’re all twisted in tangled in on each other try to kind of straighten them out before you put them in the bed. And good luck with your trees!

Some of the online avocado tree sources suggest getting a "Pollinator Pack" that contains: - You get 1 Hass Avocado Tree (3-4 ft.) & 1 Cold Hardy Avocado (3-4 ft.) - Pollination pack for faster fruit and increased harvest size Is there a specific reason to use a 'Cold Hardy Avocado" instead of a second Hass avocado? Does it matter as a pollinator? And any idea what's in this 'pollination pack' other than a balanced fertilizer?
@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard 2 года назад
Hi VARocketry, The idea behind a pollinator pack is to have multiple trees of complementary flowering types. For example a Haas is flowering type a where as a Fuerte is flowering type b. The As pollinate the Bs and the Bs pollinate the As. It has nothing to do with cold hardiness. But I am assuming since that pack contains Haas that the complementary tree would be Fuerte or Zutano which are type B. @SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard 5 месяцев назад
if it has flowers or fruit on it you run the risk of them falling off...so if you want to get fruit this year it would be best to leave it in it's pot and transplant after you pick the fruit. then again if it's in a small pot you really don't want it to have fruit on it that young anyhow.

Question; if my stock is 18. to 20 years old, but the February freeze took it down to having to grow from the rootstock, will I have to wait 10 more years for fruit? Or is this the perfect rootstock to get some of your graft stock in the fall to start over ?🌱🌱🌱🧐

@SleepyLizard what are your thoughts on cold tolerance of the different varieties when using the seed as a root stock? Are any of the varieties you grow compatible with Northern California Climates or is it better to stick to the Mexican varieties? I have my SleepyLizard avocados ripening on the kitchen counter as I type this ✌🏻
@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard 2 года назад
Hey Runboy, glad to hear your box made it and I hope you enjoy the fruit! Since we plant our rootstock from seed it's going to have variation so it's tough to say what rootstock will be cold hardy. that said, the variety you put on your rootstock has a lot to do with cold hardiness. Hass, Mexicola, Zutano, Fuerte are all grow well in California and are cold hardy.
