All good information, Scott. When my husband and I retired five years ago, asparagus was the first plant we put in the garden. We waited three years to eat anything as that was recommended. Now we enjoy asparagus spears nice and fresh from the garden. We do not have any bug issues of any kind with this plant. What a joy.

This is the best asparagus bed video, Scott. I’m planting my Jersey knight hybrids from Raintree nursery and I’m going to make it a 3’ x 8’ bed, instead of a 2 1/2’ x 8’ bed - I think that will make a difference down the road and I won’t waste my time with successive covering of soil. Thanks again!

This is the best video I’ve found about planting asparagus crowns. I’m about to attempt this in our Texas heat. I’m going to plant in a raised cedar bed. Do I need to put plastic or cardboard board at the bottom or just start layering the organic material on top of wood. Also do you think I need to have a soaker hose installed inside of the raised bed or can I just water with water hose. It’s pretty hard to keep anything alive here after June!
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 5 месяцев назад
I don't recommend anything under the bed, especially plastic. The roots should have full access to the soil underneath unless it's contaminated. I hand water with a hose, but a soaker hose can make it easy.

Many of your raised beds are higher (2 2x10 boards high). Can you elaborate further on why you only went one board high for the asparagus? Is it because that is sufficient depth, makes it easier to replace the boards on this perennial bed when they rot, and/or other reasons? Thank you for all the excellent videos! I’m just getting started with a new garden, and your videos are tremendously helpful!
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 4 года назад
The main reason for my high beds is so I can work in them while sitting on the edge to ease strain on my back. The asparagus bed needs almost no attention other than watering and occasional weeding so I don't need the height. The soil depth is fine and I did consider future replacement of the boards, but that was secondary.

While you could harvest the next year, the plants won't have a true two-year-old root system because they were dug up to sell. I would suggest waiting at least until the second year to harvest.

This is very interesting and thank you for your information I did plant just a few of these as a learning curve now 2 years ago and am waiting on the last year to see how we go, but would have done more earlier if the cost was a great deal less at the time but than a coupple of weeks ago I came across the seed of the same which cost a great deal less for 40 in the packet and then upon learning from your video that there are male and female I am wondering what will I have, well perhaps all females and as you state in your video that you have the experience of growing from seed wonder if you would be so good as to give me/us your aquired knowledge please. From the seed packet instructions that I have followed, it was advised to soak the seed for 48 hours which I did and I have planted 3 seeds into small pots watered and then as instructions stated I then put these into a polythene bag sealed and left to germinate, the instructions stated that it would not require further water but now two weeks later seeing the soil to be very dried out after having very high temperatures, I slightly opened the poly bag and water below the pots and then closed them now this happened some four days back but so far seen no seed growth. However, I have purchased a few more packets of seed. I would most appreciate any advise please. Thanking you in anticipation of your help. Maureen
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 2 года назад
When planting from seed you can expect a mix of male and female plants. For germination the seeds should have consistent moisture. Drying out for a brief period may be enough to prevent it.
@mikeedward3161
@mikeedward3161 2 года назад
Gardener Scott, thanking you for your helpful tip on the seed germination, so perhap's would you consider that I should remove the poly plastic bags that I have contained the small pots in or just leave where they are within this but keep watch on watering rather than left just in the poly bags watered by just what is made within the bags? Come winter or rather when temperatures greatly drop in November for us, when frost arrives how are asparagus baby seedlings than kept, with the few that I planted from actual plants like those that are shown in your video here, I did a little protection by covering with Forcing Tunnel/clotch that allowed rain water into plants, however already I am putting leaf mold on these plants, learning from your video that this is a benefit for them, as I have been adding this to my compost bin prior to this, which has among other items added have delivered a wonderful conditioned compost from our compost bin, this may have arrived in this lovely state because we had such a hot summer this year! I am thinking about using this for these seeds if they come on or do you think this maybe too rich and need a more sandy type earth? Is there any particular feed that will be better than what I have been using so far on these actual plants? I have found that seaweed fertilizer helped in the summer months but would not apply to seedlings, as I understand that seeds should have enough of their own to enable them to grow and push out of the earth. In trueth I do not know a great deal about these growing matters but love to learn more and greatly appreciate learning from the RU-vid population, as this community is a greatly expanding population, who are like yourself are full of interesting advise and have your own well learned methods. Thanking you once more, Maureen.

I view it, as I do nut trees, as an exercise in delayed gratification, and don't plan on harvesting any for a good two if not three years. That said, some that I planted in the ground more than 15 years ago threw some seed that the birds obligingly picked up and planted along my property line. lol Mother Nature does have a sense of humor, doesn't she?

I like your method, although I have never cared for Asparagus myself, I have thought of growing it for my wife who loves it. I have 'heard' not to expect spears for 2-3 years, is this typical or is this because I was looking at seed instead of live plants? Also don't they grow rather tall and should I be planning for them to shade other plants? Thanks.
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 4 года назад
Thanks! Spears will grow the first year, but you should wait 2-3 years before harvesting. That gives time for the roots to grow and the plant to become strong enough to handle the loss of harvested spears. The spears will turn into plants about 3-ft tall, but they are really light and airy and don't throw much shade.

Could I get away with not trenching, and building on top of our native soil? My bed design at present would be a 12” bed, with about 4 inches of hugelkultur on the bottom encased in fill dirt, then a 50/50 blend of screened topsoil and organic compost with the other amendments like biochar and peat like you’ve done. Nice video, thank you for making it! I planted my crowns 25 days ago. Today I see a crown pushing up to the surface. They were covered with at least 3 inches of soil. Do you know what is happening? My soil is very rich in mulch/composted manure and is soft and light.

They are growing. It is normal for crowns to push through the soil as they grow.

Gardener Scott thank you so mush for replying so quickly. For that alone I’ve recommended your channel to others! One more question: how many plants do you suggest for an asparagus eating family of 5? I bought 20 roots....

@Lynda5876 3 года назад
@@highlandscommunityclub1160 I read in another reply from Gardener Scott that he recommends 12-15 plants per person (for more than one meal of asparagus). Each plant yields 6-8 spears.

What are good companion plants for these beds? I heard that strawberries work well as their roots are at a different level. Thoughts? Thank you for your ongoing great advice. Cheers Richard
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott Год назад
Shallow-rooted plants like strawberries can work, but annuals like lettuce and other greens may be better. New asparagus shoots will spread into new areas of the bed in spring and I don't won't semi-perennial roots and crowns from strawberries to interfere with them.

If I have a raised bed two feet high with hardware cloth in the bottom (I have a vole problem). Will the asparagus do well?

It should. The roots can grow deep but two feet should provide room.

Hi Scott - I’m new to growing asparagus and I just received my 2 year old crowns. They came in individual pots with a lot of growth on top. Can the method for planting in this video also be used for 2 year old plants/crowns? I’m in NY, can you plant in the fall? If not, do you know how to store the plants through the winter for spring planting? The package didn’t come with any helpful instruction. Thank you!
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 12 дней назад
You can plant in fall. The potted plants won't go as deep as bare roots, but they are more likely to survive winter in the ground after some new root development. You can try to store them in your refrigerator, being careful that they don't dry out.

Gardener Scott - what would be the expected harvest per root? One asparagus per root ball?
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott Год назад
At the three-year point when you can begin harvesting, it is about 3-5 spears per root. That increases each year as the plant gets stronger and the roots spread.

If I have no way to get straw to put on after leaves what can I use? How long to you can harvest ?Also. If plant in pot any thing different
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 2 года назад
Use whatever you have. More leaves, dried grass, compost. It's best to wait until the third year to harvest. Asparagus is not well suited for pots.

can't you just fill the beds to 4-6", plant them, & THEN fill the rest of the bed? Seems easier than filling the bed, then removing dirt to the side to plant them, then filling over them again

You can. I did that in another bed and it works well.

I am about to plant asparagus for a friend. I seen a video that said it takes a lot more energy for the plant to push up through so much dirt at first. Is that a real thing for asparagus?
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott Год назад
It does take a lot of energy, but that is normal. It's a big reason why we don't harvest in the first year so new energy can be stored for future growth.

Can you put crushed eggshells for calcium into the soil??
@GardenerScott

Crushed eggshells don't add as much calcium as many people think. It is not in a form that plants use and does not break down easily.

@GardenerScott

That's perfectly normal. It takes a week or two for the roots to hydrate and begin growing and another week or two for them to reach the surface, maybe longer if they're deep.
