Thank you for posting, I am on clay soil and that has solved a few problems I am having. In return, I would like to tell you I have had tremendous success in planting bushes, shrubs and trees in Triangular-shaped holes instead of round ones. It encourages a quickly developed stable tripod root system and lessens the chances of ball roots (like when they are left in a pot too long) as the new roots in a circular hole tend to favour the freshly dug soil rather than push through the clay walls of the hole. A triangular hole guides the strongest roots into a corner that they cannot turn around from, forcing them to penetrate the clay. I hope you find this useful at some point and thank you again.

My dad used to enjoy grafting. Wish I would have learned more about it while he was still on this side of the grass.

I heard that. I feel the same about taking time to learn from the elders. I haven't gotten into grafting but it is definitely a life skill.

Right on Jake. Bare root fruit and nut trees are super simple. Just don't plant them too deep. As my dad used to say "trees don't like wet feet." Unless of course we are talking about water loving trees like willow, cottonwood, alder etc. etc!

Continuing to enjoy your channel! Interesting to build a habitable mound above the clay soil. Is this something that you have had success with before? Do you know if the roots will go down into the clay and thrive, or do you think the roots will sprawl out in the topmost layer?

Great question. There is not a significant amount of compost to keep the trees roots from seeking deeper soil. The trees roots will find their way down into the native soil and thrive during the summer months in the heavier soil which tends to hold more moisture for longer. I suppose if these trees were planted into deeper ammendment over a larger surface area the trees roots might be more surface dwelling. I have planted many trees like this over the years and they seem to do pretty well. Again thanks for the question. 👊
