🌷ADDITIONAL FLOWERING INFO😀: All spring-flowering bulbs require a period of three to four months in cold temperatures (ideally between 0 and 7°C) in order to flower. This period is called vernalisation and its stimulates a bio-chemical response that “turns on” flower formation and initiates root growth. If you live in a warm climate you can chill your bulbs for this period in your fridge or freezer. To stop the bulbs drying out, place in a bag with some compost around them. Place bulbs away from fruit in your fridge as fruit emanates a gas called ethylene which can damage the flower bud within the bulb. Enjoy! 💚🍀
Danke sehr für das Video, Darren. Jetzt weiß ich wie ich die Blumen Zwiebeln Pflanzen kann. Ich habe Blumen Kisten genommen, es ist nicht geworden. Ich wede mit Blumen Tope versuchen! Danke!
Thank you. I love your video. Will your pots get rain water when it rains? I’m planting tulips in pots in my garden. I live in CA. I’m concerned about the rain over water them.
Hi Wanda, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, I have my pots on my balcony and they receive water when it rains. Providing you make sure the soil is free-draining and your pots have drainage holes at the bottom, your bulbs should be fine. You can also add broken crockery at the bottom of the pots and sand or grit to the soil to improve drainage even further (I did both of these in my How to plant Tulips in Pots video if you're interested). When we're planting in pots especially terracotta pots the moisture will be drawn out naturally so its ok if your pots get rained on. The bulbs need some water too! Hope that helps. xx
Hi Dl, I'm getting round to it 😀 if you need the info now I would suggest watching one of my bulb aftercare videos as the tips are exactly the same. Pinch off dead flowers, move to full sun where the crocuses can photosynthesise, then when the leaves go grow cut them off, dig up the bulbs, check for diseases, then either plant them outdoors or allow to dry then store in a cool dark space over summer. Plant out again when autumn comes 🙂
Crocus bulbs need a cold period of around 3-4 months if they are to flower and growing properly, so you'll see them some months after you've planted them :)
Hi D, yes in this video I didn't explain about the vernalisation period clearly enough so I'll add a highlighted comment in the comments section. I have a normal-sized fridge 😂 the balcony in autumn and winter is my cool box. Thanks for your feedback.
Save the bees! Why are they called "gorms" and not bulbs? Alsoooooo, you mentioned that you can plant crocuses with other plants. Are there any you recommend?
Thanks for your questions, Neil! Corms and bulbs are both swollen underground stems that store food for the plant during winter until the plants break dormancy in spring. They vary slightly in form and structure but the main difference is that bulbs have fleshy, scale-like layers surrounding a center bud, like an onion. Corms don't have these fleshy leaves or scales. Crocuses are so versatile and can be planted with other bulbs like tulips, hyacinths, daffodils to create a spring flowering display, in borders and with woodland plants like bluebells, lady's mantle, forget-me-nots, the list goes on! :)
Hi Bhuban, glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for your feedback 😀 with each video I learn something new and now I make my videos quicker and snappier. Blessings!
