I find that my Limelight hydrangeas are by far the tallest growing hydrangea i have ever grown. As an added bonus, they are literally maintenance free once established in the ground. If you can, buy them at a large size in your local garden center so you don't have to wait years and years for them to mature. The large hydrangeas you saw in my videos are about 10 years old . They have been this size for about 4 years already though. You will love them in your garden or landscaping . 🙂🌺

From the UK. Thanks for the tips. May I ask, do u not need support and are they okay planted in the open like that with no windbreaker on any side? I have one in the house I'm renting and we had some very sting winds and some of the stems from the base came off and weakened it. I want to plant some more in the front garden between the drive and lawn but not sure is that's a good location or if I need a different type of peony

I have found after almost 50 years that it is best to build up a bed or use hills -- see how her commercial or cutting beds are done. That way you don't have as much of a chance of burying too deep nor have water stand and collect around tubers. I have found it is best to leave mulch about 2' clear but mulch further out and I like to buy peony cages at the same time I buy roots and put them in when I plant each tuber. This way I know exactly where they are and I don't have to worry come spring about damaging eyes or stems when placing in the spring when they are actively growing. If you get lots of rain in the spring -- you need to provide supports to help hold them up as the flower heads are heavy and rain will have them flat on the ground w/o support. Growing in full sun gives them the best natural strength but rain and storms will crush them and your heart. Many times they will spring back up but might get damaged in the meantime.

Amazing peony advice . You are a wealth of peony knowledge . I love your tip of putting the peony cage around the peony when you plant it . So many times I’ve planted the bare root amd then forgot where the plant was in winter and messed with it by accident . 👍👏👏👏🌸

I grew up in Texas. They don't get enough chill hours there to bloom (our lilacs fail to bloom 4 the same reason). When I moved to St. Louis, I planted several. They never even came up. The next year, I dug up the tubers to return (plant warranty) and when the lady at the store asked why I was returning them, I told her they never even came up. She asked how deeply I'd planted them, and I told her about 6"-8". She laughed and said, "You planted them too deep, replant them about 1"-2" below the soil line, and I promise they'll come up and bloom." I did, and they did. Lesson learned even though it took a year to figure it out. 😂😂😂

I have peonies that were planted in 1957. I haven't fertilized them, and I get beautiful flowers every year. The homeowner was a lovely woman who had this house built, a d the first thing she did was plant a 75-100 tubers, and I made the mistake of listening to a neighbor who told me to till the soil. Well, the peonies survived, but the dirt loosened and my tubers are surrounded by creeping Charlie! I'm happy to report that the plants are surviving, but every year we spend countless hours weeding around the plants. It's worth it, because they are absolutely beautiful! Just thought I'd share.

Thank you so much, my Mom had peonies in our back yard and I always loved them but I also heard that they take a long time to get established so I kept putting off buying them. I really missed them so this year I finally caved only to end up completely confused about the correct way to plant them. This is an excellent video and your instructions are flawless! I live right in Somerset County very close to your farm so I'm surprised this is the first I've heard of it! Maybe I can visit next season and see your gorgeous flowers!

Two other companies are Hollingsworth Peonies who fresh dig and only ship in the fall. The other is Cricket Hill Peonies - they sell supports and shade umbrellas too or you can make your own over the winter. I have never used them but if you show or sell cutting stems, can be helpful. But for large beds, there are less expensive ways to protect. We also burn off our peony beds if growing for selling. Never compost the foliage, same for tomatoes, potatoes, peppers - burn it or send to the dump.

Even my huge oak trees are dying. ❓I bought 4 Peonies the first part of December but I haven't gotten them in the ground. I'm in Zone 7 where winters are mild although 3 days ago the temps dipped into sub freezing temps. I think my life would be complete if I could get my Itoh Bartzella with its supposed 9-inch blloms growing strong. Can I still plant them outside now in Zone 7 (Northeast GA)? I'm in Ohio. I have a peony bush that blooms every year. Never knew much about it. Came with my house when I bought it. I want to learn how to take care if it and make more of them. It's on the side of my house that gets full sun. It's very top heavy flower. Need help figuring out how to put it up on a stilt or something. It droopy. Mine are a creamy white. Love the scent. I didn't know what they were my first year until my neighbor told me they were peonies. I get about 10 a year.

@KellyLehman 4 года назад
i looked up some information for you on the internet regarding peony fertilizer tips . hop you find them helpful . 😀PEONY FERTILIZING TIPS Source ➡️ homeguides.sfgate.com/feed-peonies-39971.html The Best Way to Fertilize Peonies The best way to fertilize peonies is by using a tulip fertilizer. You should work the soil well before you plant your peonies, mixing in compost or another organic material like bonemeal or well-rotted manure and a small amount of fertilizer. In the spring, when the plants begin to grow and the shoots are 3 to 4 inches high, you can apply a complete, dry, synthetic fertilizer such as 5-10-5 or 10-10-10 or organic fertilizer such as 5-5-5. One application of fertilizer per year is usually sufficient to promote plant growth. Using a low-nitrogen fertilizer for peonies is important, as a fertilizer with too much nitrogen could hinder the plant's growth. Be careful to not overfertilize. Always add the fertilizer around the drip line of the plant because if you add it directly on the crown, it could burn the plant.

@KellyLehman
@KellyLehman 4 года назад
Hi Nataly , thank you for your question. I would wait a while longer to give her a chance to come up . I am in a hardiness zone 6 and my peonies are about 3 weeks behind mu usually bloom schedule. here is some information I found for you regarding transplanting peonies in spring in case you decided to dig your peony up in a few weeks if you still don't see any signs of growth . Good luck . :) 😀 PEONIES HOW TO TRANSPLANT IN SPRING SOURCE - homeguides.sfgate.com/transplant-peonies-spring-38845.html Though peonies (Paeonia spp.) thrive in cool climates down to U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zone 3, they can be grown in climates as warm as zones 8 and 9. They often grow as deciduous shrubs that take several years to become established and bloom well after planting. If you want to transplant a peony, ideally you should wait until fall when the plant dies back. However, if you move your peony in the spring just as new growth occurs, it should fare well, though it may not bloom as well the first year. * Till the soil 12 to 18 inches deep and mix in 4 inches of organic matter, such as compost or leaf mold. Peonies thrive in well-draining, amended soil in an area that gets at least six hours of sunlight. If you live in an area with hot summers, though, some afternoon shade is also necessary. * Water the peony with 1 inch of water one or two days before transplanting. Because transplanting is stressful for plants, it is essential they are well hydrated for the move, not water stressed. * Remove the peony from its current location, digging around the root ball with a spade and getting as much of it as possible. Slide a tarp or piece of burlap under the root ball to keep it intact while you move it to its new location. * Dig a hole that is two times as wide as the peony's root ball. The depth should be exactly the same as the root ball so it is planted just as deeply as it was before. Planted too deeply, the plant may not flower. * Set the peony in the hole and backfill the soil around the sides. Tamp the soil with your hands lightly so you fill in the air pockets but do not compact the soil so hard that water is unable to flow through it. * Water the peony with 1 inch of water and add 3 inches of mulch, such as bark or leaves, to conserve water during the first year after transplanting and to keep the roots cool during warm weather.

What hardiness do you live in . Here is what I found online regarding best hardiness zones to plant in ... "Sarah Bernhardt" peonies produce full, pink blossoms. Jupiterimages/Photos.com/Getty Images "Sarah Bernhardt" peonies (Paeonia lactiflora "Sarah Bernhardt") are medium-sized flowering shrubs with large, light-pink blossoms. These perennial plants are grown from root divisions with three to four eyes, which are the nodes from which stems grow. Divisions with fewer than three eyes take much longer to flower than divisions with at least three eyes. Divisions should be purchased from a reputable nursery. Of you are not sure what zone you are in , here is a place you can plug in your zip code to find out Hardiness zone finder The USDA Hardiness Zone Map divides North America into 11 separate planting zones; each growing zone is 10°F warmer (or colder) in an average winter than the adjacent zone. If you see a hardiness zone in a gardening catalog or plant description, chances are it refers to this USDA map. To find your USDA Hardiness Zone, enter your zip code or use the map below. Click here for more information about hardiness maps. Find your zone using the map below or enter your zip code. What are Zone Maps? Gardeners need a way to compare their garden climates with the climate where a plant is known to grow well. That's why climate zone maps were created. Zone maps are tools that show where various permanent landscape plants can adapt. If you want a shrub, perennial, or tree to survive and grow year after year, the plant must tolerate year-round conditions in your area, such as the lowest and highest temperatures and the amount and distribution of rainfall. Is it possible to fake the chilling period? I live in a place where we dont get any snowfall
@KellyLehman
@KellyLehman 3 года назад
Hey , there . The snow fall is not as important as the cooler temps for peonies . Here is some information that may be helpful Where to grow: Peonies thrive in cooler climates (Sunset zones 1-11; A1-A3), where they get pronounced winter chill. But some (see below) will grow well in warmer climates. All are also worth a try in dappled shade in zones 14-20. There, give plants afternoon shade and ample water. When to plant: Set out container-grown plants in late April in warmer climates, May or June in cold-winter areas. Expect more bloom from 3-year-old peonies in 5-gallon containers. How to plant From nursery containers, in spring or fall: Loosen the soil and mix in generous amounts of compost, then place the plant in the ground with the top of its rootball level with the soil, taking care not to disrupt tender feeder roots. Or transplant it into a large (18- to 24-inch diameter) container that is wider than deep. From roots, in fall: Plant herbaceous peony roots with eyes 2 inches deep in cold climates, 1 inch deep in warmer regions. Itoh hybrids should be planted 3 inches deep in cold climates, 2 inches deep in warmer areas. How to water, feed: Water regularly. Feed with low-nitrogen fertilizer (such as 5-10-10) as the first leaves unfurl in spring, then again after the last flower fades. When to pick: To harvest blooms for bouquets, cut stems just as flower buds begin to open (leave at least three leaves to nourish the plant for the following year); they’ll last up to a week in vases. Most varieties produce one bloom per stem, although Itoh hybrids produce more blooms per stem as the plants age. Post-bloom care: In autumn, cut herbaceous and Itoh hybrid peonies to the ground; new growth will emerge the following spring. Pick up a peony Choose: For cool climates: Three new Itoh hybrids (crosses between tree peonies and herbaceous peonies): ‘Bartzella’ (very large bright yellow blooms), ‘Pink Double Dandy’ (pink, of course), or ‘Yellow Doodle Dandy’. For cool or warm climates: Four herbaceous favorites: ‘Blaze’ (bright red single), ‘Festiva Maxima’ (white double with crimson flecks in the center), ‘Sarah Bernhardt’ (pink), or ‘Sea Shell’ (satiny pink single). I would try to remove some of the soil first . If you can do that with out disturbing the rest of the root system you may be good to go . If not , i would wait until fall when the plant is dormant and than dig her up and replant with no more than 2 inches of soil above the highest eye. Hey there flower friend . I would give you tips on this if I knew how to do it 🤗. I don't know the answer to that one but i'll bet someone on our Kelly Lehman's Flower Tribe Facebook group does . So I’m guessing you can’t plant them in a pot?
@KellyLehman
@KellyLehman 4 года назад
Great peony question . Yes you can plant peonies in a pot 👏👏🌸😊. . Here is some information I found for you online regarding growing peonies in a pot . How to Grow a Peony in a Pot Written by Michelle Miley; Updated November 27, 2018 Peonies (Paeoniaceae) are available in many varieties, some of which are herbaceous and some of which are deciduous and known as tree peonies. Both types grow large, colorful flowers that measure 10 to 12 inches across. Herbaceous peonies are smaller and grow to be about 4 feet tall, while tree peonies easily reach 6 feet in height. Peonies of either type can be grown in containers and do well in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 3 -9 Select early-blooming peony varieties in Mediterranean climates to enjoy the blooms for as long as possible. Some attractive early-blooming varieties include “Charlie’s White,” “Marietta Sisson,” “Xuan Li Duo Cai” and “Rosedale.”

Choose a large, light-colored pot with several drainage holes on the bottom. Peonies have very large root systems, especially herbaceous varieties, and need much deeper pots than other container plants. Young nursery peonies should be planted in at least 1 1/2 feet of soil, and larger peonies need more. Older, larger peonies need containers that are at least 18 to 24 inches wide and deeper than they are Fill the container with a very-well-draining potting soil mix composed of 65 percent topsoil and 35 percent perlite. Peonies are very susceptible to root rot and should never be planted in standard potting soil, which does not provide adequate drainage.

Place the container in an area where it is shaded but still receives about three to four hours of sunlight each day. An area of dappled shade is the perfect spot for potted peonies.

Water peonies at least once a week. Peonies are drought-tolerant and usually require little water, but container plants need more water than those planted in the ground.

Fertilize peonies in the very early spring when the leaves are starting to unfurl. Peonies should be fed with a low-nitrogen formula such as 5-10-10. Fertilize again when the plant has finished blooming for the season.

Move the container to a sheltered location for the winter months where it does not freeze. Although container plants must be protected from deep freezes, they must experience cold winter temperatures in order to bloom the next spring. Plants grown in hardiness zones 8 should do well, but those grown in zones 9 and 10 may not bloom in the spring if the winter is too mild.

Things You Will Need
Large, light-colored pot
Casters (optional)
Topsoil
Perlite
5-10-10 fertilizer

Tip
Place pots on casters before planting, as the large pots required by peonies get quite heavy and difficult to move when full.
Peonies can be successfully grown in root bags. Source ➡️ homeguides.sfgate.com/grow-peony-pot-41756.html
