Hello mam I am a PG student from India and doing it in Pomology subject. My thesis is on strawberry variety screening but it went totally wrong and a disaster. I planted them in Lucknow city on the 8th of October 2023 on flat beds( approx 300 runners) but after almost 40 days they all died. Why mam ? I did all I could during my trial but I couldn't succeed while my other batchmate succeeded in the trial on strawberry . Their piece of land was approx 100 m away from my land . What went wrong with my strawberry ? Mam my batchmates planted strawberries in the month of early November. So was that a factor for their success? Mam but one student planted it in November still his crop did not succeed . Mam please give basic tips about strawberry farming in sub tropical conditions

Hi! I'm planting strawberries right now, I'm using cow fertilizer or cow manure, and I'm using a 3-1 ratio of planting soil to cow manure, I've gotten that tip from a worker on a garden-store. But i wonder, when do I water my plants? Every day? Every weekend? I'm using straw as cover on the soil by the way, just if that changes the moisture
@ReSprout
@ReSprout 3 года назад
Yes, straw should help keep the moisture in the soil, which is GOOD! And also keep the weeds down too. Water when the soil is dry. If you want an excuse to buy a cute little garden gauge (I mean, like, who doesn't??), you can put one in your yard. I empty mine once a week on Mondays and make sure the garden gets 1" of rain of week and if not, I pull out the hose.

Do I have to remove the grass if I plan on using a raised bed? Or can I put it on top of the grass then maybe put black plastic on top of the grass? Or is that unnecessary?
@ReSprout
@ReSprout 2 месяца назад
Definitely don't use black plastic! It will break apart into little pieces and you'll never be able to get it out of your soil. Ask me how I know this! 😬 Also, you want to allow water and worms to get in and out of your beds and it won't be able to do that with plastic at the bottom. For my shorter beds, a long time ago, I put cardboard on the bottom of the beds before to block the grass. That worked. For these beds, I ended up removing the grass in order to level them properly. But then I threw the removed sod back into the bottom and covered it with tons of soil. No issues with the grass re-growing. Weeds are always going to get into your beds. No way around it. The only way to prevent weeds is to weed regularly. If your beds are level, I wouldn't worry about removing the grass. Just fill 'em up. The grass with naturally die underneath.

Hi Susan, I'm definitely in the warmer area (Long Island) of New York (zone 7), but you can do them in zones 5-8. I don't do too much to them over the winter, but for my winterizing video I did top dress them with compost. They are very happy right now. I'm harvesting strawberries daily!

Great, informative video! Thank you!! My strawberries are in a 2' high x 4' x 13' raised bed that we built last year & we used the hugelkultur method to save on the cost of soil. QUESTION: Now that the strawberries are in the bed, and the soil has broken down about 2", how do you add enough soil/compost to bring it back up 2" without disturbing the roots? I'm thinking I shouldn't have planted them in as deep a bed, in the first place. 😟 Do you think I should build a 1' high bed to put them in, and not use the hugelkultur method in it? The soil will still breakdown, though, and the plants will still get lower in the bed, right?
@ReSprout
@ReSprout 3 года назад
Hey Susan! I'm not versed in the hugelkultur method, though I know the premise. I'm not sure how hugelkulturists (is that a word?? LOL) deal with the height issues. I've successfully laid mulch on top of strawberries in the fall and the strawberries do poke up back through in the spring. You could add some height that way. Don't add too much though because you don't want to smother them. I think if I were going to do hugelkultur I might use it more for annual beds where it was easier to top off the soil after I harvested a crop (which everyone has to do anyways regardless of whether it's regular soil or hugelkultur). Keep experimenting! That's the best way to figure it all out! ♥️

Is it possible to add lime after your strawberries are planted? Also, I guess I missed it, but how wet should the soil stay/often should one water the strawberries once planted?
@ReSprout
@ReSprout 3 года назад
Not sure about the lime. For the watering, I just use a rain gauge I have in my yard and start hand watering if I start getting less than 1" of rain per week. If you live in a dryer area, you might want to try an automatic soaker hose system though, since hand watering that often might be a lot of work.

@ReSprout
@ReSprout 3 года назад
Yep, straw works! Whatever mulch material you have on hand. I live in the northeast with lots of trees, so I always have piles of leaves around. In raised beds you can plant them 12" apart, so 14 plants per row (since my beds are 14' long) x 3 rows (since my beds are 3' wide) = 42 plants. They fill in pretty quickly so don't be disappointed at how pathetic they look when you first plant them! Gardening is an exercise in patience, LOL!
