Thanks for the vid and tips! I just did this today with my 4Runner, turned out great! I’m just amazed how easy you made that paper laying work. I did like 100 pieces of tape and it kept peeling off
I'm waiting for my wife to bust in any second and yell..."are you seriously painting something out here? I smell paint in the house so knock it off!" lol God love her. Awesome job though man. Thanks for the tutorial.
ORTHMANCUSTOMS haha, did my grill on my 04 4Runner and she is like why does it smell paint out here and why are you painting it black? Lol they don’t get it.
For those of you with 4Runners you can just buy the black accent (front & rear) for the TRD Pro. They come in black and fit the TRD Off Road. Yes, I know is more expensive than Plasti Dip. But less of a pain and time.
Looks great! I can't believe he painted with the vehicle right next to it. I guess I would be overly cautious & also would have masked off a whole lot more on my 4Runner when I do it
Great solution for someone buying a front bumper during corona-time. While I am waiting the 12 weeks for the bumper to be built & shipped, I'll do this! The black factory/OEM retails for $270, so even if you good discount, it is still pretty pricey. No-brainer for my situation. Thanks for the video!
Did a whole bumper cover the other day but i will say if its really hot in the garage I recommend spraying very close with the rattle can like 3 inches away or so at maximum. I had the stuff dry far to quickly and the surface ended up being very rough with more distance. Ill probably have another go at it given its so easy to peel off
Did you apply any sort of clear coat over it so that it’s easier to clean. It seems the rubber texture would be had to clean and collect dirt. When you wash does it come out looking new? Any issues fading or chipping?
No clear coat. It's simple to do and easy to redo so there was no incentive to make it long lasting. Some small rock chips, but nothing too bad that would make me want to redo it.
Two things I’d do differently: (1) Invest in a high quality respirator, especially if you’re going to paint indoors. You’ll be surprised as to the amount of toxin the paint releases. (2) Spray the paint on a practice sheet to clear any blockage. The dip tends to block the nozzle when dried.
did you score the paint around the bumper with a knife or something? how does it peel off exactly at the border of the bumper like that? also, any reason you didn't tape around precisely around the edges of the bumper?
Looking to try this just on my 2004 f250 lariat. The plastic valance and lower valance of my chrome steel bumper. The bumper will stay chrome and the 20 year old plastic valances have gone gray and stick out like a sore thumb next to my black plastic grille and mirrors and whatnot. Afraid of the tape and spray and whatnot so I may just uninstall the valances/bumpers and reinstall. Great video, thanks!
I'm going to be doing mine but I'm going to send them first to get it even better stick .. cuz if deck plastic sheet peels off too quickly. I'll be alright I'll be all ready for paint..💪😊
Looks great. It is unfortunate that so many car manufacturers put these silver accent pieces on the bumpers. They do it just to make you want to move up to the higher trim because litterally nobody likes it. I have these same things on my Blazer and it makes it look much worse. They weren't there I would have the full monochrome black and white look. I am considering plastidipping them, but they are textured plastic, so I don't know how they would hold up or if I could get it off later if I wanted.
There's a small gap between the valance and the bumper, so the plasti dip won't connect. However, you want to get a solid amount of dip on the bumper so you can peel it off easily. It's just easier to get looking clean and to peel off that way, at least in my experience.
Hey bro nice video! I was planning to do the same thing plasti dip on my 4runner but my question is does toyota void warranty if you do plasti dip on grill? Do you cver your radiator before doing that? Thank you
We actually installed the TRD Pro grill a couple weeks ago. It matches the grill pretty well. There's slight texture to the plasti dip but only really noticeable up close.
Amazing. I wanna do this. Mine got a scraped up from being too close to the garage door. I’m in Gilbert. You in east valley or west? Really enjoying your videos.
@@9to5EscapeI went ahead and did it 2 weeks ago. On my Silverado. One can per bumper. 5 coats. I learned the hard way to leave a gap with the tape. That’s the most crucial part
Leaving a gap allows you to paint a border around your paint area that you can easily peel off at the end to create a clean cut. Be sure to apply a thick coat to the gap.
It has been a bit over 2 years and this is still going strong. It has been through trips, car washes, off roads trails, rain, and snow and there's no signs of letting up.
Great thanks for the response. I've always considered doing Plasti dip but wasn't too sure how it would hold up. Bought my new eco diesel and it came with black rims, black mirrors, black running boards then they left the ugly chrome bumpers. They want close to $1000 per bumper just to wrap them here where I live so it's great people like you are showing what can be done. Cheers.
