Chouettes are without a doubt, the best way to learn backgammon concepts from more experienced players or from position analysis. The games and positions come fast and furious and you see so much more than just solo match play with no feedback from others.

Great video. You need to do a follow up covering settlements, beavers, carryovers and auto doubles, and interlocking chouettes

Thanks so much! I hope it helps some newcomers out there. I like the follow-up idea. 😁

@@backyammonyams The fact of the matter is backgammon is a great platform for multiplayer player simuls. Chouettes, are an obvious choice but I honestly wouldn't recommend them to novices who want to participate in a multiplayer experience. The caveat I have with chouettes for novices is unless your playing for points (defeating the purpose of gambling) instead of money, novices are likely to be hesitant to participate. I suggest doing a video on duplicate backgammon and duplicate teams somewhere down the line after you follow up fully covering chouettes. Perfect for novices as they're competing against not only the individual across from themselves, but also the entire room. Much like in a chouette everyone is playing the same rolls, and in a teams setting each participant has one competitor move as dark on one board while their partner plays light against a member from their opposition on another board. All matches can be recorded an uploaded to a program such as Xgammon and players and teams can be ranked on not only wins and losses, but also on PR. Unfortunately, their is almost no content on RU-vid for chouette and i haven't found any duplicate backgammon videos or tutorials.

Interesting video and well explained. Regarding money games in general, is there a standard time for a game or are they played without a clock? On the backgammon galaxy app, one point matches are 1 minute on 'normal' setting, yet 3 points matches and over are 2 minutes per point.

The phrase "money game" in backgammon just means you're playing a single game, usually with the Jacoby Rule in play. Chouettes/money games are typically played without a clock (using one for a single, social game would be a little overkill). Instead of using a clock for turn-keeping, two pairs of dice are used. Picking up your dice indicates the end of your turn. This is not to say people don't play short matches for money. Maybe they agree on a dollar per point, a static sum, or the dinner bill. 😀In this scenario, a clock makes sense. The standard is 2 minutes per point with a 12-second delay. This means a 5-point match would allow each player 10 minutes, a 7-point match would allow each player 14 minutes, and so on. Thanks for watching!

Throw that second set of dice away. Playing with a single set is even more important when money is on the line. Just tap the board to signify an explicit end of turn. Two sets of dice lead to quick rolling and number confusion if what is played is different from what some thought was rolled by the dice are picked up.

Boo to "must beat the captain", it leads to distorted cube action. We much prefer that the rule for keeping the box is to win the game and to either break even or have positive equity to maintain the box. Now the captain is back to being incentivized to cube timely and not go deep knowing the box has to take them or lose the box.

@@mmesich Ah, interesting. The way I phrased it is how our club plays, but I dig your approach.
