I've only just come across singing bowls even though it seems that it's been a pretty big thing on YT for a few years. Is it possible that some bowls just don't sing? I bought a handmade bowl from Thomann, it doesn't sing and they said sometimes handmade bowls don't sing. They are sending a replacement, but I just thought it was bizarre...surely a handmade bowl was tested before it was finished, I mean...a singing bowl that doesn't sing? I feel like I'm being lied to.
Answer: bigger bowls need bigger stick to get the best sound of it, and smaller bowls need smaller stick. the wood side of the stick brings the "female harmonics" to vibrate, which are higher notes and the suede part of the stick reveals the "male harmonics" which are lower notes. If you watch other videos, you'll see also people using bigger mallet to hit the bowls. These will allow you to hear the lowest notes your bowl can produce (my favorites!)
Oops, I just realised that people actually liked my videos and commented too. My bad. Sooo, Regarding mallets , it's pretty easy. It's easy because if you use the wrong mallet the bowl won't sing. Like the comment above, smaller bowls need a small wooden mallet and bigger bowls need big suede mallet. Bigger bowls need suede because wood will bounce and rattle due to the bowls vibration. On the other hand if you try to use a bigger suede mallet on a small bowl, you will end up pushing the bowl off your hand. To get a deeper sound on a big bowl, use a gong mallet. Hi Natalie, sometimes the suede bubbles up because it is not glued to the wood. Have a look. Sometimes people stick felt instead of suede and that doesn't work either, although you said it is suede so I trust it is. 3rd reason is if the bowl is smaller than 9.5 cm in diameter then it difficult to play with suede stick. 4th Reason could be you don't have the correct pressure and speed. Can i know, what is the appropriate stick size for a 12.5cm diameter singing bowl? I currently have a stick which is 12cm long, but it seems maybe it is too small for a 12.5cm bowl?

Thanks for sharing. When you said tapping caused hair-line fracture, did you mean tapping while rotating the stick around its lip ("playing"), or tapping in general....? I only ever tap ("strike"?) my singing bowls and never "play" them... Thanks in advance.
Hi mate, I mean tapping in general. Over the years I have noticed that the cast bowls in general loose their long lasting resonation if you tapped them too many times or too hard. Tapping is better and safer with gong stick rather than a singing bowl stick.
I'm just getting into using singing bowls. It's quite calming and I think that is the main reason I'm interested. Also, what material is the mallet that you use with the bigger bowls, is it wrapped with leather or some other material? Thanks!
They're usually wrapped in leather or felt. I, too, have just started getting into them ... Once I heard them and learned how to play them, I began researching and found SO much info. (of course, RU-vid is a great resource!). LOVE the idea of using them for meditation/relaxation, AND for cleansing crystals (my other new found interest). It's all about energy, even with the singing bowls. High vibration of the bowl effects one's OWN vibration/energy ... Love, love, LOVE, singing bowls ... Getting ours this week coming. :)
Where do you buy your bowls from? I have a meinl bowl so far it is about 4.75 inches across and 2.75 deep, I got it from guitar center. It resonantes very nicely and it has an almost immediate calming effect.

Play it for at least 5 minutes. That's an average minimum time it takes for our brain to go into Alpha frequency. Yes, daily is a best way to go. For beginners, I recommend a machine made bowl, not a hand made bowl. Machine made bowls are easier to play, especially if you have children who are also learning to play them. Once you master a machine made bowl, then you should consider a hand made bowl.
