In this guitar lesson video you will learn how to play the main riff in Black Mountain Side, as recorded by Jimmy Page on the first Led Zeppelin album.
I have deliberately made this video on just the riff, because it is important to get comfortable and happy with it before moving on to the next parts. I shall do the other parts before long.
In the meantime, I hope you have fun with this.
Cheers for now,
Mark

I look forward to these lessons, and this one is as comprehensive as possible. I don’t know where one could find a more complete lesson without sitting in person with an instructor, but I can watch this and practice along with it as often as I wish. Many thanks!

Awesome. Thanks to the "Led Zeppelin Complete Guitar" book, that I bought when I was like 15 or 16, I learned that tuning. I learned a lot about alternate tunings from Jimmy Page, actually. "Black Mountain Side" was always one of those songs that eluded me from learning 100%. So I am looking forward to you future installments.

I caught this little thing you’re doing! You repeat that yardbirds/Jeff beck motif. That Psychedelic thing sitar thing. Descending single string run. It’s sounds right. It feels right too. For years this solo has always been the most interesting piece on the guitar to learn and relearn.

Thank you so much, this is the best and easiest to follow of the YT tutorials on this tune. However, watching Page play it live in the couple YT vids there are, and watching Mr. Jimmy play it, "they" play the opening harmonics on the 12th, 7th and 5th frets respectively. I get why you hear the way you do, but I don't think it's right, at least as the way Page played it live. Did you ever do the rest of the song? I haven't looked on your channel yet. But again, good job on this! It's really not a hard pattern, but it's more about being used to doing the hybrid picking and getting used to the pattern; deceptively complicated to play!

Thanks! Interesting about the harmonics. I'll check out some videos of JP playing it.

Where were you 35+ years ago, My Blues?!? :) Seriously though, I know I've already brought up the matter of which "beat" Black Mountain Side starts on ... now I have to ask an even more existential question ------ when did you first grasp/understand the importance of economy of movement; which is evident in your Blues playing, but so, so obvious in your playing here. I only wish I'd of grasped that idea/concept/truth all those years ago.............
@mybluesguitar
@mybluesguitar 2 года назад
First question is easy: thirty-five years ago I was under the delusion that I could 'make it' in the music business. Next question is tricky, because it's not something I have been doing deliberately, but I have seen people cover the topic on YT. It's a good one to make a video about. Thank you for your input. Btw, I recognise the castle/tower/keep in your ID pic. Where is it?
@coolmacatrain9434

@@mybluesguitar Thanks for the reply, My Blues. After years of playing, I've only recently fully realised the concept (and need) for economy of movement and equally as important (if not more so) the lack of tension when playing. As for the little castle = en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burt_Castle

Nice work, but you do know that the riff is by Burt Jansch, in an interpretation of the traditional "Down by Blackwaterside", right?? BTW this isn't "blues"

Harmonics are done on the twelfth, seventh than fifth fret. Seventh fret alone is incorrect.
