Here's the final part of the tutorial - my take of Merle Travis classic, inspired by all the versions I've come across, including Duane Eddy's one. All picking patterns explained, all the chord shapes are overlaid throughout the video.

Thank you for taking the time, having the chord shape in view while you are making your explanation and giving us many repetitions of the application.

As many have already said, well done, sir. And many thanks for sharing your gift! I have been playing for over 20 years with no formal instruction. A lot of the other utbrs use terms with I am unfamiliar. The way that you give note by note instructions along w separating the comp and melody helped me really get my feet planted into this style. This is now one of my go-to warm up songs irrespective of the style I am playing that day. Again, thank you for sharing you God-given talents for teaching and playing.

Mateusz, You are a fantastic instructor. I've always wanted to learn this song and found it to be pretty difficult, but you make it look easy. Now, I'm still stretching my thumb on a daily basis to get that first base note, but I'll get there. You break it all down in such detail, that anyone can learn this! Probably the best instructor I've seen on here! Keep them coming!!

The only problem is that if everyone knows how to play it, knowing how to play it is no longer special or impressive.
@Barabyk
@Barabyk 3 года назад
Agree! That applies to covering any tune. Once it’s done, there’s no magic behind it. To me having own take or being able to improvise over given tune/progression does way more to ones musicianship than just learning the tune.
@haggismuncher
@haggismuncher 3 года назад
I totally disagree...Chet Atkins wanted everyone to play his music...he even gave lessons on how to play his style.We are merely carrying on his legacy...the magic is in his music...that will never be able to be repeated. The little inflections he put in, whenever he played Cannonball Rag, because he never played it the same every time.....this is Mattius’s version of it...watchYou- tube, there are 100’s of peoples versions of this song. Tom Bresch even plays it differently to his father...in brief...the magic will always be there

Ah ok, thank you. I figured it out just now. I expanded it a little because it sounds so cool. I saw Marcel Dadi do this on Jerry Reed's " Kicky" " tune 20 yrs ago and could never quite get it. Thank you so much.

Thanks a lot - I just discovered the original song by Merle Travis yesterday for the 1st time, which seemed impossible to play and now after your great 2 part lesson, I’m already playing the song about 80% correct- lots more practice for the other 20%. The hardest part for me is the rhythm on the B section D7 & G syncopated parts. I think the D7 really does need the alternating bass (D to A), otherwise it sounds a bit empty on the bottom end.

If anyone is learning to play this they are most likely an advanced guitarist. You need to pick up the lesson a little bit. You were teaching it far to slowly..It`s almost painfull to watch
@Barabyk
@Barabyk 4 года назад
Appreciate the comment, and understand your concern, but nope. Vast majority of my audience expects to have things broken down slowly. It's based on feedback and the way I've been teaching and doing clinics in the past, also 20 years of doing one-to-one instruction. Bear in mind, that once you're advanced player, you're expected to be able to figure out these things by ear, not watch the videos. If you find it painful to watch, get your favorite version, slow it down and get your own pace of learning. I pretty much don't watch guitar tutorials for the same reason you mention. You never get 'just right' pace, as most of the tutorials are made with certain middle ground in mind. Sometimes they focus on too many basic things. You can also skip 10 seconds forward if you wish. 'L' on your computer keyboard. Have a good one!

In the B section, is it incorrect to just play the barre chord (still with the thumb in the bass) for the G and alternate the bass note between the low g and 5th fret D? It just doesn't sound as good not alternating that bass for just the one chord, I'm trying to figure out a good solution. Awesome lessons, thanks!
@Barabyk
@Barabyk 6 лет назад
Car Guy It would be absolutely great to do so, the only problem is E note in the melody. I have big fingers, and putting my pinky to form G chord for alternating bass note would choke dead open E string, but once you’ve got comfortable way of doing it, it’s always good to have alternating bass note.
@carguy3460
@carguy3460 6 лет назад
I see your point, also tried the ring finger covering both D and G strings, tricky but I'll get it! Thanks for all these lessons man, so many people teach this incorrectly. You've singlehandedly made me a much better player!
