Does it matter if you grip the cymbal with your thumb facing toward the cymbal or to the side of it

Questions ok sp my teacher keep putting me on different type of instruments like Snare,Quads,Bass and cymbals and I can't play Quads becuz it's a little hard I don't really like Snare that much and the cymbals make my hand hurt because I don't know how to hold them right but I like playing bass right know I'm cymbals ok so my question is how can I tell him I want to stay on bass and he put me has like leader something for the cymbals but still how can I tell him I like bass more than cymbals
