I read an interview of Bowie years ago that he was in a hotel in NYC and had to get up early for an appearance. Someone next door was loudly trying to figure this song out to the point of keeping Mr Bowie up late. He went and knocked on the door to just show the guy how to play it to quiet them down, and it turned out it was Tennis Pro John McEnroe👍🏼 If there was RU-vid lessons back then maybe he’d have gotten more sleep
I heard somewhere that McEnroe and Knopfler are/were mates and MK would give JM guitar lessons in return for tennis lesson because the Dire Strates man was a huge tennis fan.
Dude can I just say I freakin' love you! If I need to know EXACTLY how to play a song, you got it all wrapped up and ready to go. I love you marty! You will always be remembered as the most awesome guitar teacher!
It's great to have a " go to" to learn. We had to learn riffs from listening to the radio, ( Whenever the song came on), and we had to play from memory, because we had no access to records, so we learned many songs in the wrong key I learned this, starting with a G, played it here and there with a few bands, and believe it or not, it makes it harder to transition. ( Also figured out many chords wrong).
Hey Marty, every time a search for a song tutorial you pop up. Thank you very much for been playing guitar for about 3 weeks now and you have taught me about 6 songs so far. ❤
Awesome lesson, thanks Marty, I was able to play with the song after watching this, including adding the 3rd fret bend of the low E string coming back to the main riff.
Great sponsor! People need that this time of year especially. Prayers for any of you struggling with happiness or mental health. You are loved! Get the help you need and you can get through this.
Thanks for going through this note by note. I had been trying to work this one out and It's a bit of a finger twister but after watching and with some patience and practise I'm actually getting there now. It's a fantastic riff that is a great one to learn, and from an awesome teacher like yourself. Big thanks and my respect Marty. 👍
Nice tone Marty! I was interested to learn on another channel that this riff, which I had just assumed was being played by the immortal Mick Ronson was actually being played by David Bowie himself. I have always appreciated Bowie not only for his great songwriting but also for the musicianship he brings on stage with him, but I didn't know that he was comfortable enough on the guitar to risk this riff. There's nowhere to hide if you miss even one pick on this one, it's so right out front. I did find a live version though and it is clear he handed the responsibility for the riff off to Mick. Further respect for the great David Bowie!
Marty,1000thankyous my guitar has improved out of sight,I finally feel I've graduated from intermediate to professional thanks to you.love you marty.from Paul Hart
Amazing lesson as always Marty! Thanks so much for all your BOSS patches as well! Can you please recommend one of your patches that works well with this Rebel Rebel riff? Many thanks! :)
That "zoom" style mental help is a fantastic idea folks. Counseling support is very hard to get, especially in rural areas, or under gov support. Lower overhead, choice of therapists, easy access, all good things. Thank you Marty, and good luck BetterHelp! Loved feeling the ancient muscle memory BOUNCE into action running thru this little super classic riff, being also learned very early on guitar, and now being about 42 years since I last played it! Amazing how our bodies can do that. "Like riding a bike"
Another great video Marty, long time first time. Quick question for you, I'm an acoustic guitar player and new to electric, is your amp set to clean or...? Sounds a little distorted maybe??
Kevin, set your "gain" or pre-amp to just where it STARTS to break up, then adjust the "Volume" to how loud you want it. That will get you started. Have Fun!
