*I’ve been playing Digimon for the past year mainly due to childhood nostalgia. It’s a super fun game and very cheap as well. Won a store championship last month and now I’m registered for nationals.* :)
Thank you so much for highlighting this game! New England area of USA has a big in-person competitive community for this & we all critically analyze it consistently. So excited to see it’s getting more recognition! Especially with National Finals coming up rapidly. Extremely new player friendly & far from Pay to Win.
Just a minor correction at 4:05 In newer sets, there are now Option cards that can remain on the field. It is worth clarifying that you need a Digimon, or Tamer specifically on the field to activate Option cards from your hand, not just any card.
Another add-on. Multicolor cards are now a thing, and to play a multicolor option card (Such as Dark Gaia Force, which is Red/Black) You need either both a red and black card in play, or a multicolor card that is both red and black.
I am not sure if this was a change or a mistake in the original video, as I have only just started to explore the game, but there is/is now a Mulligan system, whereby the player going first you can redraw if desired, then the player going second may redraw if desired after the first player has chosen to/chosen not to. As an aside I found funny, the official rules are also oddly specific that the winner of Rock Paper Scissors goes first rather than getting to choose.
its finally here! memory is one of the most interesting resources in card games and its cool to see a freeform turn structure Its also nice to know evolutions wont be stranded in your hand when you can just play them directly
The resource system makes me wanna try this game on it's own. It's super cool. You can't get "mana screwed," and the more powerful cards you play the more resources you potentially give your opponent to deploy their responses. I've been brewing a homebrew card game and I might revamp the whole thing and steal the Memory system.
Yaay! I’ve recently gotten quite a few friends into this game, It’s such a fresh breath of air and you do a really good job showing the basic rules. The game has a lot of depth and variety to it that is hiding underneath the surface of it’s simplicity. Thank you for the great video!
Really enjoy this game. Prices were dumb last year and just hard to find locally. But that seems to have mellowed a bit. Hoping this game continues going and more and more people get into it, its fun.
Prices for the game are gonna always be high because of how they do their rarity system and promos. Typically a set has one great secret rare and one meh secret rare. A box MSRP is $90 and you get either one secret rare and one alternate art in a box or you get two alternate art cards. You usually need 4 of the good secret rares and since you aren't even guaranteed a secret rare in a box and the other one in the set is typically meh compared to the good one, the price of that card if often expensive. Especially in the case of something like Omnimon Zwart: Defeat. It's a secret rare and used in a lot of the top decks so it's $60ish and you need 4. That's already $240 starting if you wanna build one of those decks. Also they love to print strong, exclusive promos that you can only get from that promo and they don't reprint them outside of other promo events (they haven't had a reprint set or anything like that yet.) For example if you want to play diaboromon you will need to get at least two of the tournament exclusive promo cards that are going for around $70 right now and it's only a T2 deck. Pulsemon for a long time was $35 to upwards of $55 each because it was exclusive to a promo pack that was given out randomly to stores to go with set 3 and stores weren't give very many. They also never got more in stock. Was a staple in yellow and you needed 3. Another massive issues I had with the game was the fact that every set that came out introduced a new best deck in the game and was winning most of the tournaments they entered. The first time that's not the case is for the next set releasing and I'm not sure about the set after that because I stopped playing before I read all the info about set 7. The game itself is enjoyable but the way it's way too expensive for a new TCG for me to want to stay invested in it. I'd just play magic or pokemon for the price it was costing me to play DIgimon. I swapped to cardfight vanguard instead
I do hope they alter the way they do rarity and promos in the future. If so I would love to get back into the game. Until then it's really hard for me to recommend to anyone.
@@MaPleWoRlDOrder my point about price was to do with early last year, box prices were astronomical, not even local stores were doing the $90-110 a booster box should have been... Everywhere was close to $200 around here, sometimes you would find boxes for $150ish online. Starter decks couldnt be had for the $12 or so they should be.. even locals $25.. it was dumb. Sealed prices have gone back to normal for the most part, sub $80 on most boosters now online back to $90ish instores.
the first 2 or 3 sets were major short printed and scalped i wasn't able to get in until recently because of it. Sadly we are still seeing a lot of delays in the US but god its a great game and future sets really are looking good.
It's great to see someone as big as yourself shine some light on this really neat cardgame. Also want to add some stuff that was omitted in the video or not clear: >Your turn end when your memory goes below 0 AND once every effect finished resolving. For example if you attack for 2 securities and the first one is Hammer spark, even if you go below 0 you'll still keep going until the attack is finished. Another example from the green starter deck, you're at 1, you use "Needle Spray" (2 memory: suspend one of your opponent's digimon), BUT you have a Izzy in play which reads "[Your Turn] When one of your opponent's Digimon becomes suspended, you may suspend this Tamer to gain 1 memory." you can suspend it to go back to 0 and stay in your turn. >Also you can attack your opponent's security OR their suspended Digimons when attacking Still a great video to start playing, easy to understand and top quality like all of your content, and I hope you and everyone else looking at this video will have fun playing
There is one other thing that wasn't stated and that is you can't deck yourself till the start of your turn draw. You can't lose from deck out from digivolving.
glad to see you covering Digimon! The memory gauge was the biggest selling point for me. I've absolutely loved the deck building in the game and hope the community continues to grow! Awesome video!
Yeah the memory gauge mechanic is fascinating. Like a tug of war. Do you want to be greedy and play a huge Digimon? Then your opponent gets more memory. I absolutely love this concept. This has me very interested in giving this a go.
@@dorsalfin22 tug of war is a great way to describe it! and yeah give it a shot! if there's not a digimon scene at your locals, I know the digimon discord and a couple of other content creator discords do a lot of webcam games!
I'm so happy to see you covering this! It's such a good game and knowing more people might get to enjoy it now cause of your efforts is great! Please keep making these awesome videos!
I remember having some Digimon cards growing up. I never learned how that game worked and thought that this might be it. Didn't expect that it was a new game to coincide with a new anime. Sweet! I haven't done much with Digimon in some time now. Also, this game is straight up Duel Masters (or Kaijudo if you remember that version). Your five cards in the "security stack" are just like your five shields from your deck in DM. The "security effects" when they are flipped are just like the "shield triggers" in DM that let you cast that card immediately. One difference though is that when your shield is broken, it goes into your hand and not your graveyard (unless you cast it), so it was this great system that allowed you to catch up when you get beaten down. The power scaling on DM cards is also in multiples of 1000 and it's the same combat system of the creature with the greater power destroying the weaker one or trading if they're the same. No damage system there either. Attacking one at a time and your creature tapping to do so is the same. Only creatures with "Blocker" being able to block and needing to tap to block is the same. This game is straight up Duel Masters. That actually makes me more interested. Also, tsk tsk Professor. Don't you know that you don't "evolve" your digimon? You can only digivolve them! :P I could nitpick your pronunciation of "Agumon" too if I wanted. XD
It actually a spiritual successor to a spiritual successor to Duel Masters. Duel Masters own Ryan Miller made a game for Bandai called Chrono-Clash, which was supposed to be a huge crossover game - with brands from Naruto and My Hero Academia to Godzilla! Unfortunately the economic and legal realities of that project proved untenable to Bandai; but they didn't want to abandon such an elegant system. So they decided to make some further improvements and pair it with an IP that they actually owned. Digimon was the obvious choice.
Oh, that's really interesting. This "Chrono-Clash" didn't actually make it off the ground though, did it? So I feel like it's still more fair to compare to Duel Masters. It is really similar. That crossover idea is interesting, it's basically what Magic's trying to do, only there it's a bad idea to throw away your unique brand and identity when you already have that. Doing a game that's a big crossover right from the start makes more sense. It did feel like this game was sort of like trying to give us Duel Masters again, only pairing it with an IP that's already known to try and make it perhaps more digestible to fans. Very interesting info. Thanks!
@@luliby2309 Chrono-Clash did have some success but as I recall after that the IP holders for the Godzilla version refused to play nice, so they couldn't hold the Godzilla VS Naruto VS Evangelion tournament that they wanted to. So it was very much Bandai taking their ball and going home to a franchise they own.
Oh neat. I had never heard of it before. Well, after seeing how ridiculous crossovers is going for Magic, I think having a consistent brand and identity will probably work out better for them.
Holy Cow! Glad to see some of the larger card channel recognize this game :) game is not perfect, but its definitely a more accessible than most magic formats.
it is cool to see larger YT channels covering the game. As a smaller channel myself we can only do so much and this was a well put together video as always. I watched a lot of your MTG content but i have fallen out of MTG in the past few years due to everything wizards has done and digimon became my main TCG ever sense it came out. The game has shown continuous growth with actual competitive play and a lot of love put into the cards not only in the art but fitting in references to the various media it is based on. I hope you can try to fit in a few more digimon videos giving your thoughts and opinions on the game and various other things you think you want to do. Thanks again and have a great day.
Digimon is a great game and definitely needs more positive exposure, so thank you so much Professor! If you plan to do more Digica videos and want to bring on more knowledgeable people to help, I highly suggest Hoang Zero. He's highly knowledgeable and skilled at the game and has pretty great energy. Would love to see a Final Fantasy TCG video as well! Much love.
There's a mistake when describing the When Digivolving in the breeding area section. It is referring to when YOUR Digimon digivolves in the breeding area. It's When Digivolving effects do not activate. Beelzemon can still use it's effect if your opponent has another Digimon in play. Gabumon simply cannot be targetted by any effects regardless (unless it specifies the breeding area) because it's in the breeding area. They also cannot move a Digitama/Digi-Egg card, it must at least be Lv.3 or Higher. A much simpler way to describe it is "Digimon in the breeding area cannot be targetted by card effects, or activate their own effects unless that effect specifies the breeding area" because the Beelzemon description isn't completely wrong, but also wrong at the same time.
@@StudioRevoct yeah i loved duel masters as a kid and was sad it died and no one played it, happy to see a franchise i already like take up a siilar rulset, but sadly seems theres also no locals who play this so i still dont know how i gonna be able to play.
So glad this is finally being covered I've played the 3 major games of pokemon yugioh and magic and I gotta say digimon is hands down my favorite of the bunch! Thanks for the video proff!
@@letsgodigiv5615 Yeah ive been playing magic for years and the game is good but oh boy do some people get really worked up over it. There are also a ton of abilities and newer cards usually dont have descriptions of the abilities printed on them. I like that so far all digimon abilities say what they do on the card in parenthesis. I'm loving the digimon card game so far but I only have one deck atm. Planning on getting the Mastemon deck when it comes out next month.
I have been EAGERLY awaiting this video from Prof! Digimon is my favorite TCG to play and collect right now and hopefully this video can show people who were curious about it what the game is all about.
So glad you covered this prof! This game is so good with an amazing community. The cards are beautiful with great mechanics. Hope all of you enjoy the game as much as I have been and my fiends as well.
minor update, some tournaments (in NA and Europe at least) allow a full hand mulligan, putting the 5 cards to the bottom of the deck. also is important to note that dual colour option cards require you to have BOTH colours present on your field (nursery is considered present on your field for option cards), this also matters for when the option card pops in security.
This is awesome thank you Professor for taking time to make a comprehensive and digestible explanation to the Digimon Card Game :) Adding a note to playing option cards at 10:50 for starting players. You can also play the color option card if you have the same color digimon in your breeding zone. Don't forget to hatch when you can, sometimes it'll come in clutch to let you play an option and turn the tide of the game :)
Gameplay feels very similar to duelmasters, very interesting. I can see why "rookie rush" type strategies would seem popular for this game. Overall, I really like the art of the cards and it seems to me that the card quality (i.e materials, coloring, foiling process and general sturdiness of each piece of cardboard) is really high. Great vid prof, got a good glance into how to play the game.
Amusingly its actually a spiritual successor to a spiritual successor to Duel Masters. Chrono-Clash (designed by Duel Masters own Ryna Miller) was a very interesting experiment which was intended as a kind of crossover for broad-range of IP... but ultimately doing a board-game model similar to Universes Beyond Secret-Lairs was untennable. Bandai refused to let so many good ideas die, so they instead used them as the basis for a more traditional TCG using a brand they owned. At that point its easy to imagine why Digimon was the natural pick!
The memory system seems so unique and interesting i have a lot of nostalgia for digimon and was curious about how the TCG works and i need to say i will definetly play this someday.
It's a pretty fun game that I was taught to play almost half a year ago on my LGS. The truth is that it is extremely easy to learn and very dynamic game. I'm glad to see this tutorial of yours, teacher.
Although not surprising, you managed to explain the Digimon card game better than the tutorial app made by the game designers. For the life of me I couldn't figure out where the security stack came from. Great content as always professor.
Honestly kinda feels like the tabletop TCG genre kinda needs both Digimon and Flesh & Blood to stay this hot. They're both honestly kinda easy gateways to the broader genre, as opposed to the closed system of the big three.
Thank you for putting more eyes on to Digimon TCG. I have been collecting cards more so than playing since it's release, but strengthening it's popularity will allow Bandai to continue making cards and indulging in my collecting habit. Hope you consider making more digimon content. I always preferred Digimon more than Pokemon as a kid so it's refreshing to see it give it another go at tcg.
This card game only just came to my country and my brother and I have started collecting because we're both lifelong Digimon fans. So excited to start playing, it seems so unique and fun! We were both confused about the memory mechanic so I'm really grateful for how well it was explained here!
Thanks for continuing to promote and celebrate amazing TCGs! Loved Digimon as a kid, and super excited that it's coming back in a big way. Keep making amazing videos Prof
Man this guy does digimon too. TCC is on a whole another level. It's showcasing something I've been thinking about. A channel that showcase as much or every TCG.👍👍
I ended up watching a ton of your videos related to card storage and such when I first got into the digimon card game last year, so super stoked to see you covering the game! This is a great tutorial for getting started too, a few very minor inaccuracies but all of the basics have been covered very well.
Just as a more recent update, Mulligans are now being incorporated into the game... So now the beginning of the game state will be 1)Shuffle Deck and Egg deck 2)Decide who goes first 3)Draw starting 5 cards 4)Mulligan (optional) by shuffling all 5 cards into the deck and drawing your new 5 cards (only one mulligan) 5)Start the game
So happy to see more and more channels, especially ones not already Digimon focused, talking about the TCG. Playing it has got me back into my local card game scene where other games didn't, and I've been a proponent of it from day 1. I love that due to how the mechanics work, evolution is key to the game unlike Pokémon where many decks rely on 1-stage Pokémon, so you are encouraged to build with cards of all rarities, making deck building more affordable. I understand a lot of folk were put off the first two sets due to high demand and low supply, but I really feel like the game has found it's groove and will only get stronger.
Didn't think I'd love this game as much as I currently do. It's a fast-paced game with a really cool method of resource control (memory gauge). Nice to see it being highlighted!!
Great video Professor. As someone who started playing about a month ago thanks to to this video I really appreciated it, but there are some points that may need to be corrected on an updated revision of this video: 4:18 - is not a [Security] effect per se, but there are indeed Digimon with [Security] effects that can trigger (e.g. BT6-056 Chikurimon). 5:34 - Mulligan rulings have been added to the game at the present (announced Feb 18th), allowing a player to re-draw 5 new cards as a first hand by returning the original first hand at the bottom of the deck. 11:08 - There are exceptions for Option cards that should remain in the field if specifically told by the card itself, usually to activate a effect after a turn. 12:04 - Not quite correct, cards in the Security Stack may also activate, go to hand or go to field based on if a [Security] effect declare it to be triggered immediately (e.g. BT2-090 Matt Ishida, as shown at 4:20). Also, a couple points that I consider should be mentioned for the sake of completion would be: - Your digimon can attack an opponent's digimon as long as it is suspended (and that attack can also be blocked by digimons or even re-routed by effects). - Side Decks (aka. Sideboards) rulings were also added (also announced Feb. 18th) allowing for additional 10 cards to be added for swapping between games as long as your final deck remains 50 card main deck with 5 digi-eggs and deck construction rules are respected (no more than 4 copies -or the limited amount- of a card total). - There are some Digimon that not only evolve from different colors, but can act as multiple color sources (e.g. BT-6061 Gigadramon) and what's more dual-color digimon are coming in BT8 set. Anyway thanks for this video as it's a great resource for newcomers to the Digimon TCG. Hope you can update it in the near future!
Personally while this is a very interesting mechanic, I personally really like the idea of building a super strong "megazord" by stacking cards with effects that supplement each other.
Very clear explanation. Thank you. I think that the no mulligan rule might have been changed. The learning app now allows you to redraw your whole hand once.
Correct. In ruleset 2.0 they added a mulligan where you put your hand under the deck and drew a new one. Now they introduced ruleset 3.0 where the setup works different. After you shuffle you draw your hand, then you can mulligan by shuffling your hand back into the deck and drawing 5 new cards, after that you put down your security cards (not before drawing your hand like in this video)
Yeah this game took me by surprise. Love it, memory is such a cool resource mechanic! Also digivolving up and stacking abilities feels very rewarding!!
As of April 2023 there is now a Mulligan introduced. Draw 5 check if you dont like reshuffle and redraw 5, then place your 5 security. Can only mulligan once.
Looks like a cool game! I remember having cards from the original card game, but the game itself wasn’t great. This seems like vast improvement. If you’re interested in game suggestions, the Final Fantasy tcg is fun and may be worth checking out!
I'm kind of surprised they don't have a full digital version of the game. They already have the tutorial companion app ya know? Some people may find a digital version more accessible. I wish more card games had scannable card codes too like Pokemon and Magic (I think).
YES SO EXCITED YOU MADE A DIGIMON VIDEO PROFFESOR! I know youy have talked about how frustrating it is making a video on something that wont get as many views. SO IM HERE TO TELL YOU THAT WE ARE EXCITED TO SEE THIS VIDEO!!!!!!
Very happy to see this game discussed! I love this game and was so frustrated to see that supply issues and scalpers hobbling the game before it started. It's fun with lots of interesting strategies, beautiful artwork (including recent old style tcg art) and is a pretty affordable game. One deck, Rookie Rush, had been a meta juggernaut for a long time and was extremely cheap to build. Boxes tend to have solid value, with alt arts that are beautiful on their own, but very tradable if you'd rather have more cards than bling.
My friends and i got into this game during 2021 and its so nice to see channels like TCC or Pleasant Kenobi give it the time it deserves because this game is so much fun
Wow this game looks really interesting. It's basically Dual Masters with a different mana system, which is great because Dual Masters was an absolutely awesome TCG.
No one could have explained it better! Love the MTG content too, a big hug from Japan! One little note: You lose if you can't draw a card from your deck on the Draw Fase. You can still digivolve or have draw effects trigger without any deck left. If you can't draw for turn, that's when you lose.
@@terumikami5831 Draw for evolution is a game mechanic and not an effect, so you always draw for evolution no matter where it happened. Any effect won't happen on the rising area, for example the Tamer Takumi Aiba let you draw a card when you make an evolution. But if it happened at the rising area this won't trigger since it's a Tamer's effect and not the game mechanic. If you are curious of how matches are played i upload gameplays showing most of the effects on screen.
wow this game is very similar to duel masters, with mechanics such the health system, blockers, and shield triggers, but it also has some very unique mechanics like the hatching, shared resource system and evolutions stacking effects. Really cool, might have to try it out
Thanks for making such a comprehensive tutorial! Team APS did a terrible tutorial in which they skipped a lot of important steps like 'what is the breeding deck?' and so on! Instant subscribe!
Thank you for exposing this game to a larger base! This game is legit yo! Finally committed on playing physically after almost 2 years of playing online due to COVID-19 and other life issues.
As much as I enjoy teaching people how to play this game myself, I am very thankful that I can now just point them to this video instead! Thanks prof :)
This felt like watching a David Attenborough documentary. I was engaged and followed through every step of the video. I hope to be as good as you for explanations and presentations during class
Yes! Thank you for covering this. I think the mechanics are very well designed. Its something fun and easy that literally a 6+ year old can get into, plus the nostalgia factor had me sold. 😎
This game is SOOOOOO much like Duel Masters. Security stack is JUST like the shield system. And the Security Effect is literally just a Shield Trigger like in DM. This is INSANE.
Its actually a spiritual successor to a spiritual successor to that game. Ryan Miller who made Duel Masters / Kaijudo designed a system for Bandai called Chrono-Clash. However there were issues related more to the retail and licensing model that Bandai were exploring - basically a board-game like sets of cards from different IP that Bandai didn't own. Sorta like Universe's Beyond Secret-Lairs, but as their own game. After that proved a huge legal issue Banda decided they didn't want to throw out a really good system, so they modified it to work with Digimon.
