Thanks for the great lesson! My dune board is on the way this week and I'm playing it with friends next weekend. I was going to try explain the game to them, but now I'm just gonna make them watch this ahead of time!
Yeah the Movie has Sting in it who cares. Sir Patrick Stewart leading a Charge into Battle while holding a Pug in one arm. Thats the true Gem of the Movie.

8:11 Just as an addition, the rules state that if a treachery card is not bid on (passed) by anyone the bidding phase immediately ends with any remaining up-for-bid-cards returned to the treachery deck.
My understanding is “if all players pass” on one card then all remaining cards are discarded and end round. So as Paul you see all the cards but if you pass on them and want to wait you might give too much away and loose all!
Rahdo, this is the meanest game I have EVER played, I think you would literally pass out if you ever played it! (Plus it's best at 5-6) BUT... it's also the most thematic game I've ever played, with hardly any luck, and so many layers and layers of tactics and strategy (the advanced rules are a must). Every tactic/power in the game has 1 or more counters. And each of those has a counter! The mind-games, manipulation and diplomacy are amazing! It has shot to my number 1 game of all time. You might wanna try it out once, just for the experience. You never know.... Love and huge respect, Salman :)
I got this game for my birthday a few days ago and couldn't play it because the rules were so difficult to understand. Your explanation was very nice and made it seem easy. Even my non-gamer friends were able to understand how to play right away. Awesome channel! I also used your video on SW Rebellion to learn that game. Great job and thanks for the clear explanation of the rules.
If the bene geserit use the voice and say during battle plan you cannot use card X. Does this happen before or after the plan is made? Meaning, can the player still pick a different card or is he/she locked in? @@RTFM
Great video. Fun to watch, and concise explanation of the rules. I might just stop reading up on games to buy, and simply buy whatever you do a rules teach for - so much easier.
Thanks for the great video. I think I can add a small correction which is about the first turn of Spice Blow. According to the Rule Book: "First Turn During the first turns Spice Blow Phase only, all sandworm cards turned over are ignored and set aside, then reshuffled back into the Spice Deck after this phase" It is important to reshuffle early worms into the deck right after this phase. I am new to this game, I might be wrong though :D
Those two "See reverse side" notes on the cards so we don't get to know them without the other video. Well played Shae, well played. Thanks for the video.
@@NuntiusInfestissumam It's a little convoluted, but there's a date mentioned in the Dune books that makes some people think it takes place 8k years in the future. Dig a little deeper though and it's actually more like 20k. It doesn't really have anything to do with the game itself.
@@RTFM - Cool, thanks. According to my Dune Encyclopedia, is closer to 24k years after our era, but yeah, to my understanding, common knowledge usually settles for the rounded 20k. Great video, btw! Cheers!

Great vid, Shea! Keep up the great work. Perfectly under 20mins for a very complex game! Exactly what I would want to forward to my useless friends, who never RTFM! I'll watch the Advanced video in the next few days God-willing :) Salman
Thanks Salman! Hopefully it'll help! And I know how it is having friends like that. I think especially now that I've been making these videos my friends just automatically think "Well Shea will learn it and then teach me" 🙄
I’ve been getting into dune a lot lately after seeing the 2021 movie and being excited for the next one. The board game looks fun and I hope I can give it a try one day and be a little conniving rat using house Harkonnen
Played for the first time (played the new version a couple of times) last week before watching the new film. We enjoyed ourselves and don’t think the game shows too much age but I’m not sure the game would flow the same another time. We ended in 5th round and basically no one went looking for spice just jumped in to bases.
@@RTFM Yeah, here on my country this version of Dune is 1,25x more expensive than Terraforming Mars and apparently it doesn't have a translated version to my language, so i'll probably buy Terraforming Mars But still, i will always watch your videos and learn more about this board game, even tho my dream is to play it irl, i will still look forwards to buying it in the future (even if it comes in English and nobody in my brazillian family understands that loooooool)
I don't understand movment. Can you split forces into several groups and make a different movement? Or you just have 1 movement per turn? Each force has 1 movement per turn?
Each player gets one movement per turn, so you can only take one group of troops and move them once. You don't have to take all the troops in a region, but the ones you leave behind won't get to go anywhere after that.
One thing I don't understand about combat. In the example you gave the Freman committed only 3 forces and lost the fight, yet all 4 got sent to the Tleilaxu Tanks. Does this mean that the loser loses all forces despite not sending them all out?
It's unclear to me from the rule: can the Fremen choose to pay for shipment to a territory not the Great Flat (or within two territories of it), as if they were off-planet? If by doing so, does it not trigger the off-planet advisor rule of the BG as well? I think the most literal reading of RAW is that they cannot: the Guild can only ship (and receive payment from) factions that are off-planet; the Fremen are described as being on planet even if not on map; therefore the Fremen cannot pay the Guild for movement, and therefore the BG never get to attach an advisor. This would mean that the Fremen also cannot initiate an appearance in any sector other than their starting locations, the Great Flat, or territories two territories from it. Could the Fremen enter an alliance with the Guild and pay half price to have their forces shipped from reserve ("on Dune") instead of just from one territory to another? It would be admittedly unusual for the Fremen and the Guild to ally with each other, so maybe this is too obscure to need clarification.
You have it right. The Fremen have no off-planet reserves, so they can't choose to ship in anywhere other than locations near the Great Flat. An alliance with the Guild doesn't change this, however I believe you can still use the Guild's ability to ship your forces from one location to another on the map.
@@herzkine The rulebook says "Allies may...cross-ship from one territory to another with forces that are already on Dune at the Spacing Guild halfprice rate." It may not be entirely thematic, but I feel like it makes sense based on their mechanics in the game.
Rex final days of an Empire is basically the same game, with much better artwork, better design, better rules, better board layout, and pretty much better in every way.
Worker placement isn't my usual go to, and I can't really think of one that has the kind of social machinations of Dune. If it helps, I'd say my favorite heavy worker placement game is probably A Feast for Odin. Completely different in theme, but there's a ton of stuff to do and a lot of different ways to play.
Yeah, it specifically says that the Shai-Hulud has to appear in a location where you have forces for this to trigger, which happens at the end of the Nexus phase.
I already think this game is layered with complex strategy with the basic rules alone... I can't imagine the advanced stuff lol. I've not mastered the basic version.
During battle, if you use a leader (or are playing a cheap hero instead), you can put down one weapon and one defense. If you don't have a leader or cheap hero, you can't play any cards in the battle plan. Special cards are discarded, except for Family Atomics, which is removed from the game.
@@RTFM Thank you! I thought that one player (player A) could play, for example, two weapons cards (a poison and a projectile) and a defense card (shield) and the other player (player B) could play a weapon card (projectile) and a defense card (shield). So the projectiles of both players was countered by shields but the poison of player A killed the leader of player B. I thought there was no limit to the number of treachery cards used in a battle plan. So to confirm, the maximum number of cards used in a battle plan will be always 2, (including worthless cards, which cannot be discarded, they can only be discarded using them in a battle plan) and 3 cards if a cheap leader is used.
How do you resolve 2 players only playing leaders and no troops, they can just keep playing the same leaders and its stale mate? Because you don't lose leaders without using treachery cards
"losing player loses all forces they had in the territory" regardless of the number dialed. If both players eg dialed 0 forces, no treachery cards or relevant traitor cards, and the leaders themselves were tied in strength, it would be a numerical tie and then the First Player would win (breaks ties). That doesn't kill the loser's leader, but does kill all of the losers normal forces in the territory. pg 11.
If you have forces in a stronghold during the Mentat Pause phase (except Bene Gesserit advisors), then you control it. If you have 3 (or 4 if you're in an alliance) at that point, then you win.
Does the Shai-Hulud (the worm) stay in that area after it has been revealed? This means that one couldn't ship to that territory or move trough it. We have been wondering about this for a while now, and we have played with the worm staying there for the rest of the turn.
So I used that sandworm token as a visual aid, but it's intended use is only for the Fremen advanced rules (and even then it's not super necessary). The point being that when the worm attacks, it doesn't stick around.
You should've left in the footage of you explaining the plot, or at least uploaded it somewhere else. I've already read it but it's nice to listen to someone else sum it up. Do you still have that footage anywhere?
I'm afraid that was a bit of movie magic. I wish I could remember the plot well enough to go through the whole thing in one take, but instead what I actually did was more like that doctor who behind the scenes clip (look up "strange noises with my mouth" if you don't know what I'm talking about). Unfortunately I don't still have the footage for it either way.
Hi. This looks really informative but this isn't the version I have. Could you remake this video using the 2021 version of the game? Because we have read the rule book a bunch of times and watched the 6 minute video by a different youTuber and still have no idea how to play. Thank you.
During a bidding phase can I pass and then bid again? For example I don't want my Fremen friend get a card but I don't mind other people. I pass but if I see that Fremen is winning the bidding I jump back in. And second question - used locations and treachery cards go to the bottom of the existing piles or we wait till we use them all up and then shuffle and start a new location/trachery pile?
The rulebook isn't super clear about passing during bidding, but my interpretation is that you can jump back in. You do make a discard pile for the location cards because you'll need it when you draw a worm, and I'm pretty sure you use a discard for treachery as well, though I couldn't find anything specific in the rules.
I actually made a video on what I think the most complex factions are to start out with. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3Mdvv3cGyJM.html if you want to check it out. The four I'd personally recommend for your first game are Emperor, Guild, Harkonnen, and Bene Gesserit.
Hey thanks! I actually let my Patreon backers suggest and vote on which games I teach. If you really want a specific game to be featured, that's the place to do it.
Hey there! Great video. I’m trying to set up an online dune game session. Would this be possible if everyone had their own game? I’m not sure because everyone would be drawing from their own deck and not a group one
The best way do do it would be a game called Tabletop Simulator on steam, but everyone needs a copy. It lets you play pretty much whatever game you want tho!
It's basically at the same time. You don't find out whether or not they were able to comply with your command until you both reveal, so before or after doesn't really matter.
Territory "the great flat" and "the greater flat". Are they both one territory or seperate? And how much spices on each territory since its only marked the great flat 10.
They're different locations. The Great Flat will get 10 spice when its card is drawn. The reason Greater Flat doesn't have a number is to show that it doesn't have a spice card, and so will never get any spice during spice blow.
Another question, if 2 factioms are fighting over a stronghold and the aggressor has used all his forces and they won. Do they still hold the stronghold. Becuase the players all agreed we can place a flipped token leader or place 1 force.
@@IamLastKings2049 I'm afraid not. If you commit all your forces, you're going to lose control of the location, no matter the outcome. The loser will also lose all of their forces, so the region would be empty if there's no one else there. You can house rule it a different way if you want, but I think they want to make sure people don't go all in too often.
Hey, freemen can move a stack to the polar sink and move another territory? And what happened with nuked wall shield, u can put units there and if is, are inmune to the Storm?
Fremen can move two spaces, so they can move through the polar sink to another space, yes. And after the shield wall is destroyed, you can still put units there and it is still a rock space, so it is immune to the storm.
Hey This has nothing to do with the video but does anybody know where I can find extra figures for Twilight Imperium 4th edition? I've looked and looked but all i can find overpriced (already) painted figures on etsy.
Unfortunately Asmodee has changed their parts replacement policy to be considerably more difficult. It's to the point where, realistically, you can't get more without buying a new game or returning your old copy (if it has missing pieces to begin with and you have a proof of purchase). The whole thing is kind of a mess, to be honest.
After you play a traitor card do you discard it? We couldn't tell and decided to discard as a standing house rule to keep the game moving. I can see it going wither way for gameplay but for flavor I like them not being able to betray you twice since you'd be extra wary of them.
Traitor cards are revealed, not discarded. I think it still works flavor-wise because you know they're compromised, so you just need to remember not to use them against the faction that holds their card.
@@RTFM cool thanks. I got this game last Christmas but our game nights took a big hit from covid. Luckily I was able to finally play a 3 player game and absolutely loved it. It feels so much like dune. They did an amazing job with it, and your explanation was very helpful.
ok something I can't find anywhere, how does the starting turn for the emperor work? they're off planet but they're allowed to drop in their forces whenever and wherever??
Anyone (except the Fremen) can ship in forces pretty much anywhere during their turn on the shipment phase. They don't need to go where you already have forces. They can even be shipped into a location where there are already another player's forces.
But you can only do one shipment per turn. The obvious ploy is for the Emperor to ship forces into the unoccupied strongholds, winning in three turns if unopposed. Therefore, the emperor must be opposed before being allowed to do this, by having other factions either move from existing forces on the board or from their own reserves.
You can try, but keep in mind that you don't win until the Mentat Pause phase, and if you start doing this, you're going to spend a lot of spice and paint a pretty big target on your head, so other players will do their best to take you down.
If bene gasseret predict correctly themeselves (bene gasseret card + correct winning turn card) so BG win alone? Means ally loses? And also happens if predicted Ally prediction card?
@@Yaegosh Special cards will tell you when you play them, and I don't have them all memorized, but I don't think any of them occur during combat. Or if they do, they say how.
Generally no. The Polar Sink location can have multiple units because no battles ever happen there, and the Bene Gesserit have an advance ability that allows for cohabitation, but usually if there are two different factions' units in a space, they're going to fight.
I saw there is a new edition of Dune game of conquer and Diplomacy : I was wondering if we could use their special rules for 2 players party in the edition of 2019? Because it definitely needs some adjustments for 2 players game. Exemple : Harkonen's 4 traters becomes so powerfull!
I'm afraid I haven't played the new Dune game, so I couldn't say for sure. What I imagine though, is that it wasn't made to be cross-compatible, but there's nothing stopping you from trying it out.

I actually talked about this on another video titled "Top 5 Dune Player Aids." If you're interested in the game, those resources will help a LOT when it comes to actually playing.
Looking at the storm section of the video, this is what I've said. Is there a part in the video where I say otherwise? If so, give me a timestamp and I'll add a note about it.
Yeah, it's especially tough at the moment. Hopefully when lockdowns start getting lifted it'll be easier. I also think it'll be a great game for conventions when those start up again. I was able to find a good group of players at Dice Tower West.
