------
Please note that I’m a folk musician and fiddler, and I don’t consider myself a classical violinist. In my experience of the folk tradition, techniques tend to be somewhat informal, variable, and flexible, so take what I say with a grain of salt :) My thoughts on fiddling are based on my own personal musical experience. If you’re looking for more formal violin technique and instruction, there are other resources out there that are geared towards that!
These videos are not intended as a substitute for the advice of a medical professional (when it comes to any thoughts on techniques such as posture, hand placement, etc).
Happy fiddling, friends!

I love this, you're teaching chord inversions and chord shapes while also giving guidance on how to use them in a melody with minimal memorization. 100% one of my favorite teaching videos!

Good subject. Another helpful resource for figuring out any chords on violin is to first work them out on Mandolin.

Took violin thru public school from 4th grade to age 18. I have ALWAYS wondered about this but of course there was no you tube back then and i wasnt in private lessons. Thank you. Ive picked up my violin again a few ywars back because my daughter started to play and im playing with her and its the best. I was searching around looking for how to play the chords , i feel like my fingertips are so large for 2 strings! 😂

Very nicely done! I'm just a beginning fiddler coming up on my 1-year mark, but long ago was a Music major and grad student, so theory is second nature. I appreciate the great balance you strike in touching on theory as lightly as possible while encouraging attentive *listening*. Thank you!

So I just started the violin about a week and a half ago. This lesson was good but a bit detailed for me. If I remember, I'll try and revisit the video in about 6 months or so. I think I'll be able to keep up. Nonetheless, good job explaining!!

You certainly cleared up a mystery that no one else has come close to properly clarifying. Well done. That said, how about a little further insight to the E minor 4 cord. How does that work, still a bit murcky on this sixth note twist.

I'm just a beginner, but the whole reason I'm trying to learn chords as double stops is so that I can chop to accompany someone else who is playing the break. I'm going to need CLOSED chords to do that because I'm going to have to be able to stop the strings from ringing after I hit it on the chop. All the strings that I hit in the chop are going to need this, but is especially the G string, because it's going to ring and ring and ring unless I have some way of making it stop ringing. To stop the string from ringing, I come off of the fingerboard--but not off of the string--with the left hand, and that mutes it out. So, I need closed chords. I really can't handle this business that everyone seems to say that any 2 of the 3 notes in the major chord will work. I don't see how that can be--the tonic and third sound totally different than the tonic and the fifth, and playing the third and the fifth and calling THAT a I chord just strikes me as craziness. It doesn't sound like a I chord at all. As I say, I'm a beginner, but surely there are closed tonic-third or tonic-fifth combinations for the I, IV, and V for the common keys....

Different forms of a major chord sound different, but they all "work". One of many ways to make music interesting. Closed chords, root not necessarily the lowest: I: BG, IV: CE, V: A(or D with your 4th finger--harder to play in tune) F#

What's the difference between a chord and a double stop? I'm thinking maybe all chords are double stops, but perhaps all double stops aren't chords?
@LodeNid
@LodeNid Год назад
A double stop is just a bit of violin technique in that you play 2 notes at the same time thus on 2 different strings. A chord is a bit of music theory and it consists of 3 or 4 specific notes that you can play one after another (arpeggio) or at the same time. On the violin it is difficult to play 3 notes at the same time but you can play 2 at the same time (=double stop) and 1 or 2 notes after the double stop, or you can play a second double stop after the first one... Best for you is take some lessons in music theory : if you have an experienced teacher who is passionate about his subject it should not be boring... you just have to find the right teacher for you !
