Hi Patty. I have to say you've been my BIG INSPIRATION and thank you for this tutorial. And you know what? I've ordered my first hurdy gurdy (almost - we're now arranging details with the maker :D). I'm really looking forward to learn to play Gurdy's Green. But I have to wait a bit (few months :-P :D).
Yes! More tutorials too please! The Longing would be another good one! Love both your solo version and the Storm Seeker original! I'm saving up for my own gurdy now, then will just need someone to help guide me. I'll be looking for an instructor, but I will gladly take any advice! Keep on playing and being you Patty!!!
Thumbs up for a hiccup lol. I'm still mesmerized by this tune, as well as your voice and accent. I think this will be one of my favorite melodies for years to come. It's a good tutorial, taught well. Can't believe it's almost been a year already
I bought one new to begin, lower than 600€. Probably not a stradivarius HG... And limited to 2 chanterelles, 2 bourdons, no trumpet or sympa cords. Anyway, sound is good when you have understood how to manage cotton, pressure of cords on the wheel etc. But good enough to learn and get some pleasure of what you succed to play... sometimes.
Thank you Patty for this tutorial, it's very much appreciated! And YES! Please make a video about glued cotton and rosin and how you can play in reverse!!! I really enjoy how you describe the ornaments as shivers and hiccups, it's very helpful :)
Hab abonniert mit Glocke und so... Echt gutes Tutorial. Hurdy Gurdy ist das erste Musikinstrument, dass mich so richtig interessiert. Es wird auch das Erste sein, was ich wir kaufen und spielen lernen möchte.
Thank you for another wonderful informative tutorial. Good explanation of the drone kick/hiccup thingy. It does set drone instruments apart. I thought it may have been something to bring timing inline as I know generally bagpipes and other drone instruments play really well for marching songs. 👍
Please more tutorials! This is amazing! Never even heard of hurdy gurdy before accidentally coming across your channel today but now I totally need to get one!
Patty I wish I could play Hurdy Gurdy. I’m just so lost where to start. I don’t really have an inspirations or motivations in life at all. It’s tough. Anyways, I enjoy your videos so much and I love Gurdy’s Green. You are so good at this!
Dear Patty, please PLEASE make a longer version of Gurdy's Green. I know, I know as an artist you should always leave your audience wanting more, but the song really is too short. I beg you, make a longer version, or make a solo album with more songs like it. I don't need a videoclip of you frolicking in the woods, as much as I enjoy that, it's the music that really touches me. Please make more!
Not sure if you're still replying to this video. But, is there a way to mute the noise it makes when you hit different keys? The clacking of the keys, for me, interferes with the beautiful sound of the gurdy. Also I'll never play this instrument but it's great to watch talented people(such as yourself) play and explain things about this amazing contraption.
I have rewritten those notes to guitar pro and... the melody (except for the first bar) sound nothing like it should! Maybe I have done something wrong, but for sure the sheet is missing all the pauses.
I find women who play the hurry gurdy insanely attractive for some reason, maybe cause it's really neat and not a common instrument. For the women out there, is it as cool for you when a guy plays it or is it kind of gay? Lol.
i know that in bagpipes the tapping notes between notes are called "grace notes" but i have no idea about gurdys, always wanted to learn how to play hurdy gurdy but could never afford one. i stand in awe of your skill! maybe some day i can save up enough to afford one and start leaning
Hey Patty!
Wow! I missed a lot being sick... Came here after seeing "PAINTING MY NEW GURDY GREEN @ BASS LINE" and wanting to see the Green Gurdy in action. Absolutely wonderful... Tutorials are always welcomed!
Hello Patty! I started playing the hurdy gurdy many years ago but stopped after 4 years when moved to another country and couldn't go to a teacher anymore. I basically stopped learning after 2 years when I got a terrible, sexist teacher for the next 2 years... Anyways. XD Watching your videos is super inspiring and your style of music is really awesome. Please make many more videos like this, and share sheet music on your facebook if possible! You really help me to get back in track after not touching my hurdy gurdy for years (I know, poor baby, i feel terrible about it). Lots of love from Hungary!! (Actully from the Netherlands right now and Austria in the close future. XD)
I never heard grace notes called 'shiver' or 'hiccup' before, but it's a great way to express the idea. I wonder if there are some rules of thumb for what ornamentation to play, like Great Highland Bagpipes have? Thumbs up!
Hallo Patty, I have been obsessed with the Gurdy since I was a teen when I saw Page & Plant ( Led Zeppelin ) live and they had amongst their many guest musicians a man with a gurdy blasting a solo in the middle of the concert. Wow. I never got my hands on one but watching your videos makes me happy. Thanks :)
Thank to you for this tutorial ! i love your song and i can not wait to try ! :p In fact, I begin the hurdy-gurdy and your channel its a real motivation for me ;D Ps : sorry for my english (Les français sont nuls en anglais, ce n'est pas une légende !)
