Rhythm guitar in Gypsy Jazz uses a special form of strumming known as "La Pompe", i.e. "the pump". ... This pattern is usually played in unison by two or more guitarists in the rhythm section.
The "Quintette du Hot Club de France", which was the fruit of the collaboration of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli in 1934, used to compensate for the absence of the drums (a novelty for the times) with
a highly rhythmic style of guitar accompaniment called "La Pompe" ("the pump") which supplied both rhythm and harmonic structure for the soloists.
Hence, the most important thing to focus on to learn this style of comping is its rhythmic feature.

Very important point RE the upstroke being as close as possible to the first small downstroke. Once I got that right (I think I did....) it totally changed the feel and swings like mad. My pick doesn't even leave the strings I don't think - it stays on the bottom E after the up. It's nice to get a little jump after the first down stroke then you get a good slap for the second down. I tended to exaggerate the jump before the slap when I was learning it but after a while it becomes more natural I don't jump as high. Cheers.

Wonderfully demonstrated, really like that fast up down stroke. What a tasteful rhythm addition :)

Wait, I'm confused. So we don't rack all the strings on the first downstroke? Just the first 2 strings proceeded by a quick downstroke?

This is a good video. I have some the best manouche players try to teach me and nothing really comes close to this one. Tell me: is there a French pompe? You mention the US and Dutch ones. Thanks.

Thanks, appreciate the kind words! A French pompe that I refer to is stylistically not far from the Dutch one, but perhaps a bit "softer" and chords are held down for slightly longer.
