That riff made this song a hit. When I was a young guitarist back in the 70s and I heard this I thought how cool, but didn’t tell anyone I thought it was cool because it was the disco era and I didn’t want to get teased but I think a lot of guitarists secretly wished it was them playing this.

I like the way you instruct in a calm, reassuring manner with lots of encouragement. Too many teachers talk AT, rather than TO, the student. Plus, you know your material. Good job, Eric. 👍🏻

Nile Rodgers of the disco Group Chic is an amazing musician and composer. I have heard and enjoyed his disco guitar and compositions for many years but without thinking deeply about the technique and style but today I found this tutorial with excellent explanation and it really made me appreciate Nile Rodgers' genius even more.

Brilliant concise and clear, are you aware that your guitar neck is not seated in the pocket correctly just saying easy fix just loosen screws and realign so the dots are in the centre of the d and g strings and then tighten the screws, thanks for great tutorial.

Brilliant lesson, thank you so much. This is THE rhythm riff and the one that just makes people smile. I always struggled to get those quick chords in at the end of the main lick, and this video finally showed me how. It was the rhythm I couldn't get right.

That quote in the beginning is good for, well, beginners. Nile is frequently on record as disagreeing with it for his playing tho; he always tries to change it up a bit, so riffs are not exactly the same.

Wow, great lesson, thank you very much!!! I really like your guitar but I noticed that the neck isn’t in line properly. You can see it by the position markers, they are not in the center of the D and G string. Also the low E string isn’t above the pole of the neck-pickup. Quite easy to fix and I think it will improve your sound and intonation.

I really love Chic and I would love to learn the guitar parts,but I am a bassist and drummer.i need to learn guitar,I have to practice using a pick since I play with my fingers on bass.Can also do Burn hard? I love that song also,I am so impressed with your technique,thank you!

This is basically the first song I’m learning on the guitar and it might not be the ideal first song but I’m a bassist and some things are pretty similar between playing the guitar and playing the bass so it doesn’t really feel strange playing this. I’ll always prefer playing the bass over any other instrument but I really wanna be able to play funky R&B soul songs like this one because it’s my favourite genre and I just think it sounds so cool. it’s also this type of music I wanna produce in the future after music senior high school, and guitar and bass play a big roll in this type of music so it feels important to know how to play both. I also saw Nile Rodgers and CHIC live and I spoke to both Nile himself and the bassist and they’ve inspired me so much to keep fighting for my dream to become a musician, especially because they both started playing their instrument in my age. Thank you for this video! It’s very helpful :)

Great breakdown of the song Eric, thanks. When I kick this one around the block I have a hard time not going back and forth between it and "Rock Steady". I'm certain Nile had more than a passing knowledge of that song. A friend of mine called the right hand rhythm approach "the churn" because you never stop moving. I also believe Tommy Bolin's song (Recorded with Deep Purple) "Gettin' Tighter" and Bad Co's "Rock Steady" also work out of the same territory as Aretha's song.

Hi everyone, I have a question about the timing of this song. I am not sure which speed I should use the metronome when I am practicing to play it. I always hear around about the 16th beats when playing Funk Music, but I am not sure according to which speed. I usually use to play Funk at 93 PPM and that works ok. I see that when I play this song the speed should be a little faster, like 100PPM or so. I would be happy if you can help me about this issue. Thank you. Kevin

I now understand when my guitar teacher always told me the hardest part of the learning was the right hand.

I keep coming to your lesson once and again. I almost have the rythm in my hands. Amazing explanation and even better playing. Just looking at your hands gives a perfect example of what is needed to play along the full song. I usually play Good Times and Le Freak in a row and my right elbow ends up almost wasted. That tells me I have a lot of room for improvement in the movement of my wrist. Anyway, thanks again fron the bottom of my heart. You have one big fan in Spain!!! .
