In this Guthrie Govan guitar lesson, I break down some of Guthrie's most iconic playing styles and guitar habits in a way we mere mortals can understand! I take a look at how Guthrie uses bends, slides and 1-string solos in a really interesting way, how he uses chromatic fills to create a rock sound and how arpeggios play a huge part of the Guthrie Govan guitar technique.
I've attempted to put all the combinations and guitar licks into an easy-to-follow masterclass that will help us improve our playing. If you're a fan of this modern-day guitar legend and want to learn how to play the guitar like Guthrie Govan, this is a great stepping stone into his world.

Someone who looks like Guthrie Govan talking about how to play like him.

You're good at describing this. Most of all it's about creating music and feelgood. His technique is out of this world. Learn from it, but as you emphasize, find your own path. I never copy a lick note by note, just trying to find a similar feel with my own vocabulary.

Thanks Stellan! I appreciate that you appreciate that. Its often just said 'find our own path' but my own experience it takes a lot of trying to copy other paths to really understand that we can only follow our path, and that's a great thing! Sounds like a Zen thing.. 'you are your path'.

The point about Govan is that nobody can play like him. His style is uncopyable.
@SamBellGuitar
@SamBellGuitar Год назад
Exactly! Nice one :) I think that could be said for any artist, especially those who have really carved their own path. And the beauty of it is that we can learn from these artists and take on board certain expressions and make them our own. nobody is born with a name. Its given to us, it is created by our environment, the people around us, the society, in the same way with music, an artist is an expression of their mental and physical environment and attention.

@@SamBellGuitar Not so true...perhaps. I've seen Guthrie jamming to tracks and sounding just like some great guitarists. I genuinely think he is a guitar savant....and possible the most talented ever.

@spanish peaches I absolutely love Guthries playing as well, he's a very rare player granted, but nobody is sacred. There's no 'one' person, there are many unknown as well doing astouding things. Possibly putting people on pedestals is dangerous, especially for one's own progression. Far healthier to appreciate, respect and love and know that humans can do some amazing things. It's convenient and safe for us to say it's impossible when actually we have one chance at life, one time to be fully ourselves and to fully appreciate art. That's hard work to do, but it's the work we must do if we really love playing music.
