Right on. The smoother the better. Some intervals are a lot harder then others. If I can’t play it right slow then going faster will not fix it.

I tend to get pop between some partials and getting rid of the pop is the problem.

Focus on smoothly changing the vowel sounds between them. Think the shape of a hill rather than a staircase

Are there any tips for switching octaves with lip slurs or would it just be the same? I am currently practicing a song called “Vesuvius” and I’m 2nd trombone and this song has a lot of sudden octave changes. I am very clean when it comes to changing partials but octaves are a different story. Anyways, thanks for the video this was still very helpful

Yep. All about the vowel sounds. Ah or oh to eee or vice versa! Even for leaps of more than an octave!

I've been learning to play the trombone for 4 weeks, and I'm having difficulty doing lip slurs (over 3 partials like in this video)!

understandable! Just start with one partial series at a time! try not to get ahead of yourself - learning trombone takes a good deal of patience and persistence :)

Yeah 💯 % when you haven't got the endurance yet though the slurs go , so I'm playing long tones on ward , that F in 1st compared to the F in 6 th grr . I practise when chops are right I'm slurring from Bb to C in 3rd , not bad then bring it down to say Eb major most times its frustrating but wow when you nail em bang on m maybe add a lip trill just a small one to lead onto nxt musical phrasing . Nice. Oh and I play for my dogs memory now , she died on Sunday, bless 💔 n I wnt give up , in my playing just last couple of days you can feel the emotion in your playing , its one of them when I should be playing with a band say on a blues Back O Town Blues , very emotional playing

@@NickFinzer I am Nick and I'm glad to say yes them lip trills are there when i want them. Not good enough just to be able to get them Nick I get obsessed with them in how to use them in my playing pal , these buggers took some practise . But in consistency patience and practise yes they are there n getting controlled hehe no way will I stop playing now. Nick on this you can rely . I never thought it possible 3yrs ago as I'd lost front teeth 20 Yr ago love that sound when they pop into eachother perfectly balanced its a feeling I actually get in my Lips

I've spent alot of time thinking about this can you talk about how you conceptualize this same concept but in going to more than one partial away. For example from f an octave up or a 6th up because I feel like the moment of change is even more magnified in this situation.

Honestly it's pretty much exactly the same whether one partial or multiple partials, and your observation is absolutely correct, you have to be even more precise the wider the interval that you are trying to slur...

I've started looking at JJ Johnson's 'Kenya'. It has repeated Bb to Db triplets in the opening section at a good tempo. Obviously you can play these as lip slurs all in 5th positions as you can the Eb which is added later. There is also an Eb, Gb, Ab phrase which could be done solely by lip slurs on 3rd. As we can't actually see how it was played, do you have any thoughts/preferences for how you would approach this ? i.e. slide positions 1,2, 3 for Bb, Db, Eb, or all in 5th ?

I would probably play the Bb/Db in 5th but still tongue it!
