Amazing as usual! Thanks so much, Noah! What I love to do is solo using the 1 scale in a 2 5 1 so basically, if I see a minor 7 chord I got taught by my jazz teacher to just solo with the 1 so for instance if I see a C minor 7 I essentially use Bb Ionian/Bb Bebop scale to improvise. But this is quite safe and sounds consonant. I find this really useful but your method is also amazing for playing out. Bye

@@NoahKellman Regrettably, no. My mother is a pianist and she made us play for 2 years when we were little kids, and then I gave it up. Started sax at 12 and have been at it, with flute and EWI, for over 40 years. Starting to get the hang of it...;) I just noodle and write with the piano.

Nice video!! Do you practice those outside-patterns (for example 6:30-6:50) in all the keys? Or is your thought process like: minor chord -> play half step above, dominant chord -> play a tritone away, and so on? Or is it a combination of both?😂
@NoahKellman
@NoahKellman 3 года назад
Combination of both- I like to hang out with one at a time, try it in different keys, etc. until I really have the sound in my ear of one specific pattern. It’s pointless if you don’t really get the sound in your ear! That’s what I would recommend. Make sense?

Great lesson but first question, you play 10ths in left hand. I have been stretching my fingers for a while and can play 9ths and almost a 10th in left hand. Any tips on how to finaly play a 10th with 1 hand?

Hey Noah, on the second example, why did you use the 'F' in the Ab minor scale instead of an 'E'?
@NoahKellman
@NoahKellman 3 года назад
Hey, great question. I'm thinking of it as Ab Dorian as opposed to Natural Minor, so it has a natural 6. Make sense?

Dude c'mon man. 5:35 you are saying "Minor Scales" which to me means Aeolian but you are playing Dorian for all the substitution scales. Ab Dorian over Gm7, F# Dorian over C7 and E Dorian over the FMaj7. Why are you saying minor scale when it's Dorian mode you are playing?
