In today's video we are going to talk about how to play outside.
In this case we are going to work over a G Dorian backing track. On any of the church modes we have seven notes that make up the scale and five notes that don't belong to the scale.
We will be focusing on those five "outside notes". These five notes create a hidden pentatonic scale that will be found a half step above in the fretboard.
It's important to not play all these notes at once, but using rhythmic phrasing to introduce the outside sounds. Think like a drummer and play outside where a drummer would place his fills.

Been playing for 30 years and this is the best explanation of playing out I've ever heard. Top notch!

One thing worth noting is that you don't have to match the specific "outside" pentatonic to each mode. You can overlay any pentatonic shape in an outside context. And if the result is that some of the notes are "inside" it actually integrates the "outside" phrasing with some inside sounds... basically if you focus on the rhythmic phrasing you can't really go wrong. It's all about resolving back to inside. Tension and release. Another great lesson. And useful. Especially the "phrasing like a drum fill" suggestion. Fun stuff! thanks!

Mr Wallimann kudos for making another crystal clear video, one thing I would love to see would be an explanation of the major seconds minor seconds 4ths 5ths I don’t know the terminology for those notes but a video on those would be amazing!!! Thank you again I love your channel, probably my favorite

Picked that up from a keyboard player some time ago. Think of a piano keyboard. White keys are C Ionian (D Dorian) and, of course, all of C majors relative modes, while all black keys add up to Eb minor pentatonic. Similar to "side slipping." I like the drum fill tip...seems like I've heard you use that analogy before. Thanks David Walliman!

Salut David. Encore merci !!!

So whatever mode position one is playing in, a half step above, playing a pentatonic scale will give the 'extra 5 notes' for the 'outside' feel. And it also means a major mode position means playing the major pentatonic a half step above. And that 'rule of thumb' applies for any position or degree of any given mode all over the neck. Wow, that's blown my mind how easy it is to map the positions for playing 'outside' Thank you, David!

DAVID WALLIMANN, ------- can you make a video showing examples of using "outside NOTES" of the pentatonic scale. Hotel California Don Felder uses a lot of Outside notes that are not in the pentatonic box. The solo in GNR sweet child of mine also uses a lot of "outside notes" from the pentatonic box. These are the 2 major examples of know of that use the pentatonic box but use outside notes as melodic notes. If you know any other guitar solos or examples to help out please make a video explaining this to learn from. Thanks for the help

Alors, comment dire? Bravo Monsieur. ;)

Merci beaucoup David! THAT was the big key to understand what Ive been hearing in fusion forever and not knowing the formula for it. I knew going up or down in a minor pentatonic buit I didnt know that was related to the modes as maj/min. EXCELLENT!!! *Can you explain how to get package classes in various subjects from your website - the paid ones please? Im very short on time so fast direct tutorials that teach advanced subjects like this one is what I need...thanks again! *Didnt realise you were Franco origin....is that Canadian?

Alright.. i’m at the 3:55 mark and i have to admit to being kinda flabbergasted because yesterday i was looking thru one of my many guitar neck schemas for 7 strings that i drew years ago and it was in the key of B minor/D major Funny thing is for the first time in years, i noticed the physical pattern of the 5 empty notes throughout the scale/modes and thought “hmm, funny how it looks like the intervals/fingering of a minor pentatonic scale” and thought about experimenting later with it about a different “outside playing” approach using these 5 empty notes instead of going up/down a half step because i’ve never really got the sounds i was looking for with this approach(or maybe i just haven’t experimented enough) Then today i find this video of you explaining this approach i just discovered yesterday I feel like there is some weird synchronicity at work here and it makes me feel giddy and weirded out at the same time Anyways, sorry for this unrelevant anecdote but i felt like sharing it Thanks Dave for existing!

I would say: G Ionian.........play Penta 5th position 1/2 Step above... G Dorian.........play Penta 1st position 1/2Step above... G Phrygian......play Penta 2nd position WHOLE STEP above.... G Lydian.........play Penta 2nd position 1/2 Step above...... G Mixolydian...play Penta 3rd position 1/2 Step above..... G Aeolian........play Penta 4th position 1/2 Step above... Then if you are brave enough....(lol)...continue with following positions on that Penta. Hope I didn't messed it up....lol.

Yeah, but he basically gave the formula to figure it out yourself. You take any 7-note scale and the 5 remaining notes are the outside. So just find the 5 remaining notes and you'll see that they form a pentatonic pattern. Major, minor, mode, etc. don't matter as long as you know the original 7 notes, the 5 outside notes are easy to map out. In fact I would say you really don't want someone or tabs to show all the rest of the combinations, it is better to work them out yourself.

Instrumental music is great and good, but I like songs with lyrics, meanings and feelings. I can sing Rock, Country and Metal. If you have a song and need a vocalist let me know and I can dub my vocals onto your tracks. If you need lyrics, that takes me longer. I have been in bands going back to 1973. My voice is better than ever, so the idea that old vocalists don't have it is only true for lazy singers who don't keep their vocal chords in shape with hard work. Not everyone likes my singing, but I have had some fans over the years.
