What it says at 1:08 : A Queen can jump over any pawn, but only if that pawn is on the same color space as any enemy pawn. If the Queen jumps a pawn you may move any other pawn on your next turn, if you do, then you may promote any pawn to a bishop or knight; or any bishop or knight + rook. However, the first time that promoted piece moves, it must move adjacent to your queen or it is demoted back to a pawn. If, however you move that promoted piece next to your king, then you may promote that piece to a queen. But if that piece remains next to your king for longer than 2 turns, then it is promoted to a king. If a promoted king is in check, demote it to a pawn. However, that pawn may never be promoted again. If that pawn reaches the far side of the board, it is removed from play. The Queen may also invoke. When it does, all captured pawns for both players are returned to their starting positions. If a starting position is blocked then the pawn doesn't return. If no pawns return to the board then remove the queen from the board. After 8 turns from when your queen was removed from the board in such a way, promote any random pawn you control to that queen.

A Queen can jump over any pawn, but only if that pawn is on the same color space as any enemy pawn: meaning if you decided to jump over a pawn, you can only jump over pawns that is on the same color of any other pawn your enemy controls. If your opponent does not control any pawns on the black space, you cannot jump over pawns that is on a black space. If the Queen jumps a pawn you may move any other pawn on your next turn, if you do, then you may promote any pawn to a bishop or knight; or any bishop or knight to rook. However, the first time that promoted piece moves, it must move adjacent to your queen or it is demoted back to a pawn: If the first rule is performed, any pawn on the board can be promoted into a bishop or knight or any bishop/knight into a rook. However the promoted piece must move next to your queen for its first move, or else it is demoted back into a pawn (which is stupid as this means the rook will become a pawn if you don't move it next to your queen) But if that piece remains next to your king for longer than 2 turns, then it is promoted to a king: If the second rule is preformed and the promoted piece is next to your king for at least 2 turns, it becomes a king. If a promoted king is in check, demote it to a pawn. However, that pawn may never be promoted again: the promoted king from the third rule becomes a non-promotable pawn if the promoted is being checked. If that pawn reaches the far side of the board, it is removed from play: The non-promotable pawn is removed when performing the normal promotion rule from normal chess. Yes, I am crazy enough to make an explanation for this rule, and I may even make rulings for this rule.

I made a variant with my brother last year where we write wild player restrictions secretly and put them all into a hat for random drawing. Everytime we play, we each add another rule and draw one in secret from our collection. (We have like 30 rules in there at this point.) The first time we played we made 5 rules each to get started. The opponent does not know what the others' restriction is. It is quite entertaining.

possible pieces for your next penultima game: zebra (knight): instead of knight movement, the zebra can move 2 or 3 spaces in any cardinal direction, jumping over pieces in the way. martyr rook/bishop/knight (rook, bishop, or knight): when capturing or when captured, both pieces are captured swapsie (pawn): invoke to swap places with a piece diagonally in front of the swapsie. cannot capture. double king (king): king moves exactly 2 spaces in any direction instead of normal movement splitter queen (queen): invoke to split the queen into a rook and a bishop, and both move up to 2 spaces without capturing using their regular movement. after invoking, a rook/bishop can move onto a space with the other to create a queen once more. gay queens (queen & king): both king and queen act like a queen, and can be captured. once one is captured, the other cannot move and acts like the king gay kings (queen & king): both king and queen act like a king, and can be captured. once one is captured, the other acts like a normal king swift rook (rook): rook can only move up to 3 spaces, then can move up to 3 spaces perpendicular to original movement. can capture with first move and still move again battlement archers (rook): rook captures from 2 spaces away (to capture, rook moves to a space 2 squares away from the piece in the same direction of movement, and piece is captured. if piece is 2 spaces away, you can capture it without moving) bishop with a gun (bishop): bishop captures from 2 spaces away (to capture, bishop moves to a space 2 squares away from the piece in the same direction of movement, and piece is captured. if piece is 2 spaces away, you can capture it without moving) queen with an gun (queen): queen captures from 2 spaces away (to capture, queen moves to a space 2 squares away from the piece in the same direction of movement, and piece is captured. if piece is 2 spaces away, you can capture it without moving) pawn with a gun (pawn): pawn captures without moving bishop cavalry (queen): instead of rook-like movement, queen has a combination of bishop and knight movement rook cavalry (queen): instead of bishop-like movement, queen has a combination of rook and knight movement queen cavalry (queen): regular queen movement is restricted to up to 3 spaces, but queen also can use knight movement the negotiator (queen): the negotiator can only move and capture one space, but capturing instead swaps a piece other than the king to your side checker (pawn): pawn jumps over pieces to capture them, and can capture more than one piece in one move. can only check a king on initial jump (if the enemy king is part of a set of jumps, checker captures all pieces up to the king, and then the king is in check). instead of promoting, checker gains the ability to move in any cardinal direction final stand (king): invoke king to capture all pieces surrounding the king. only works once per game. rude king (king): king can move to a space occupied by a friendly piece, pushing it in the same direction the king moved. if that space is occupied or doesnt exist, its instead captured. the ol' switcheroo (rook/bishop/knight): invoke to swap places with another friendly rook, bishop or knight L-pawn (pawn): instead of the normal 2-step jump, the pawn can move like a horse on its first move (en pessant can still be performed) X-pawn (pawn):instead of the normal 2-step jump, the pawn can move up to 2 spaces diagonally on its first move (en pessant can still be performed) alfil (bishop): bishop can only move 2 spaces, but can jump dabbaba (rook): rook can only move 2 spaces, but can jump Bede (queen): queen can only move 2 spaces, but can jump anti-pawn (pawn): moves diagonally forwards; captures 1 square in front stacker rook (rook): other pieces, friend or foe, but not the friendly king, can occupy the same space as the rook, and will be carried when the rook moves. rook cannot be captured, capture or check.

Emperor: King, when invoked, spawns 3 pawns between himself and the enemy's side of the board. All pawns must be adjacent to the king. Cardinal: A bishop which lands into an opponent's camp(first 2 rows) promotes to a pope and apart from original movement, can move 1 square left, right, forwards or backwards. Castle: a rook which lands in enemy camp gets promoted to a fortress, which apart from original moves can also move 1 square diagonally Squire: when in enemy camp promotes to a knight and can move 1 or 2 squares orthogonally or 1 square diagonally Officer: when in enemy camp promotes to a general which can move 1 square in any direction Sniper: a bishop or a rook, when invoked, takes the closest(or alternatively chosen or highest ranking) piece it can take according to normal rules

It seems like it would need limits on what the rules can test. Consider these horrid rules: * Any pawn can move like a queen when the second hand is between :00 and :15, otherwise it moves like a normal pawn. * Invoking the white knight immediately teleports all white and black pieces to a position such the black is in checkmate. Invoking the black knight similarly creates a position such that black is in checkmate (so black loses either way) * The king can move like a queen if it seems like a cool move in the spectator's sole judgement.

A few ideas: Medusa - Any enemy piece or pawn that can be captured by the queen is frozen, king included. The Ultimate Weapon - The queen gains the properties of all piece types except for pawns. Can now be put in check an checkmated like the king. Monarch Equality - The King now moves like a queen in addition to it's normal movement. The queen can also castle like the king as well as be put in check and checkmate. Now you see me... - The king can invoke to teleport to a random square. If the square is occupied by an enemy piece other than the enemy king then the piece is captured. Pick a different square if the first square is occupied by a friendly piece/enemy king, OR if teleporting to that square would put you in check. Soul link (any piece other than king) - If [piece type] is captured, then all other [piece type] are removed from the board. Spring Board - The bishop can now continue now "bounce" off a wall to continue it's movement by going the same direction but away from the wall. It can not end it's move in the same place it started. Sniper - If a bishop on it's long diagonal can invoke to capture any one piece on the same long diagonal without moving. Anarchy rules - En Passante is now forced if available. If the move is available but would put the king in check, then it is stalemate. Birck to Pipi - If En Passante is not performed when available then you lose your next turn. Bulldozer - The rook can now move through all pieces. Any piece it moves through is removed from the game.

A few rules I can think of... maybe a bit too complicated Field promotion: A pawn that is moved to put a king in check may be promoted to a non queen piece if one is available on your next turn before your move. Court marshaling: Any piece may move as any other piece if it can capture a piece by doing so, upon doing thus the piece is demoted to a pawn, if it IS a pawn it is removed from the board as if captured. If a king dose this it must cause checkmate or the player with the remaining king wins. Phalanx: If two or more pieces of the same type are in an an unbroken row or column and one of them would be captured it's player may invoke one of the pieces to be captured instead. The capturing piece is moved to the newly emptied space instead. Conscription: If their is an empty space on a players front-row and any pawn available, and any non pawn piece reaches the opposite back row for the first time the player who moved the piece their must place a pawn on an empty front-row space on the board. God Save The Queen: A Queen with a pawn within one space to it horizontally, vertically, or diagonally that would be captured will be switched with the pawn and the pawn captured instead. Annulment: Invoke the king, replace both bishops with either rooks or knights and remove your queen. If there is no queen, remove the bishops and place a queen on the starting position for you queen. Crusade: Invoke a bishop, for the next turn for each player knights may move four spaces in a cardinal direction and two spaces at a 90 degree angle from that direction to capture or move to that space in addition to their normal move. They still retain there ability to jump over pieces. Rebellion/Siege: If a rook the would be captured by you it will be captured next turn and shares a space on the board with it capturing piece until it is, if the capturing piece is captured before then the rook is put back to it's staring position, if it's staring space is occupied it's move to the closest open space to that position, a king put in check by a move that activates this rule is not in check until the rook is captured. Martyr: A player in checkmate may move one more piece, if that gives them checkmate, the match is a draw.

The Venom (Knight) I pretty much ignored the "keep it simple" advice lol Instead of eliminating the captured enemy pieces from the board, the Venom takes control of them. By doing so, it has the possibility of moving according to the moves of the knight plus the moves of the captured piece. The captured enemy piece can't be moved by its owner until the Venom detaches from it, and it's moved along with Venom by the player owning it and they share the same space. The Venom detaches from one piece when it captures another. When this happens the previous piece no longer follows it but remains in the space in which it was placed before the capture move. A piece is also released when the Venom gets captured. I know this explaination may be a bit messy, if you have any doubt write it down below :)

A few ideas: A rook may invoke to merge itself with an adjacent friendly bishop to form a queen, removing both pieces from the board. A king may invoke to destroy itself and one other piece, in order to bring a captured piece (regardless of whose) back onto the board, on your team. This regained piece follows the same rules for Check and Checkmate as the king. A pawn adjacent to a knight may invoke to 'ride' on the horse's back, allowing it to occupy the same space as the knight until it invokes again to dismount. If a mounted pawn is captured, both pieces are removed.

My rules (inspired from COC) Barbarian King - the king has 2 lives now. Attacking a king who has all 2 lives is not considered check, and you can capture it. When you capture a king who has all 2 lives, it now has only 1 life, and the piece which captured the king goes back to any square where it is not attacking or being attacked by any other piece. Also, the king can invoke once per game. When the king invokes, it may move up to 2 squares for the next 3 turns, it may(not must) spawn maximum 8 pawns around it(excluding the spaces already occupied), which can also move up to 2 squares for the next 3 turns. It also restores its health back to 2 lives. When a king is being attacked when he has 1 life but he didnt invoke yet, it is not considered check, and the opponent can capture it. When the opponent tries to capture that king, the king auto-invokes except for the pawn spawn part right before the capture, and since the king has 2 lives after auto-invoke, the piece which captured the king goes back to any square where it isnt attacked and attacks nothing. The king now has 1 life. After that, the pawn spawn part of auto-invoke is activated

Someone should print out some good rules and have 1 spectator draw 1 at random for each piece every game. Put those in a box and sell them as a board game, that’s thousands of unique matches. Maybe add a rule that you have to announce what a rule is when you figure it out. That way experienced players don’t get an advantage, making infinite replayability.

Archer Queen - the Queen can invoke once per game. When the queen invokes, it cannot be captured, or die, in any way for 3 moves. It also may spawn max 4 archers horizontally or vertically next to her(excluding occupied squares) Archers move 1 square sideways or 1 square forward. They capture exactly 2 squares forward, but they remain where they are when they capture When an archer moves to the starting position of opponent's pawns, it promotes to a skilled archer. Skilled archers move 1 square diagonally, and capture like a rook, but they also dont move when they capture

A cool idea for each piece Royal Promotion (King Invoke): you may invoke the King to promote any friendly Pawn to a non-Queen piece. Replacing the chosen Pawn with the new piece. This can only be done once. Jester (Queen): the Queen cannot be captured if you have no Bishops, Knights, or Rooks left. The Queen cannot move more than 3 squares in a direction if the Queen becomes a Jester. Militia (Pawn): Pawns can capture any piece in the way, if they perform their double step move option. Ascension (Bishop Invoke): you can remove all Pawns adjacent to a Bishop, this turn, Bishops capture all pieces the move through. Only works if you remove at least 1 Pawn this way. Sentinel (Rook): Rooks can perform En Passant, by moving to a space it attacks that an enemy piece moved through on the previous turn. Crusader (Knight): if there are friendly Bishops on the board, Knights can move to a diagonally adjacent space instead of moving in an “L” shape.
@pandoratheclay
@pandoratheclay Год назад
More ideas President (King): while friendly Knights are on the board, the King is only in check or checkmate if it is attacked by two different pieces at once. If the King is only attacked by one piece, it does not count as being in check or checkmate. Throne Room (Queen Invoke): you may invoke the Queen to move up to two pawns one space forward or diagonally forward, even if the Pawn would not be able to capture. Once this invoke has been used, it cannot be used again until the Queen is being attacked. Scout (Pawn): when you move another non-Pawn piece, you may also move a Pawn as it normally would, but this move cannot capture or move the Pawn into being attacked. Holy Verses (Bishop): Bishops can move, but not capture, one space orthogonally. Rammer (Rook): when a Rook moves adjacent to a friendly piece, you may move both that Rook and piece one space in the direction the Rook was moving. Cavalry (Knight Invoke): you may invoke a Knight and choose a friendly non-Queen piece, if it moves on your next turn, it can jump over the first piece it would move into, landing one space adjacent to it in the same direction.

3:11 As worded, "Assistant" stops pawns from moving at all when they share a file with an opposing pawn, which really jams up the opening. Think about it this way: Suppose white wants to open with 1. e2-e4. Assistant is obviously intended to stop black from playing 1. ... e7-e5. However, if black plays 1. ... e7-e6, white will be unable to play 2. e4-e5 due to Assistant. Thus, 1. ... e7-e6 stops white's e-pawn from moving forward 1 space and is prohibited by Assistant. As a result, black's e-pawn is unable to move forward 1 space. However, the reason black's e-pawn is unable to move forward 1 space is because white's pawn is on e4, meaning that 1. e2-e4 was banned by Assistant. This same logical chain can be taken a step further to also ban 1. e2-e3. Of course, if Assistant prevents both e-pawns from moving at all, that means that their moves wouldn't actually prevent the other e-pawn from moving (since it was already prevented from moving by Assistant), creating a paradox where Assistant prevents the e-pawns from moving unless Assistant prevents the e-pawns from moving. And while I used the e-pawns as an example, this same reasoning applies to all of the pawns in the opening position. This could be fixed by wording it as: "Pawns may not move to the space immediately adjacent to another pawn in the direction that other pawn is moving."

Some rule ideas, because I had too much time on my hands: - Swapper: The king may invoke to trade places with the opponents king. This invoke may not be used on two consecutive turns. - Warlord: The king may move as if it were a knight, in addition to its normal movement - Coward: the king is in check even if there are pieces blocking check. A king who cannot escape this type of check is not checkmated. - Leigelord: the king may invoke to promote an adjacent pawn to a knight. This invoke may only be used when you control no more than one knight. - Darwin: When a pawn captures a piece that is not a pawn, it must promote to that piece - Automaton: When a pawn captures a piece, you may take another turn - Boulder: A pawn may capture pieces in front of it - Paper cutout: A pawn is captured when an enemy piece lands on any adjacent or diagonally adjacent space - Hordeling: when a pawn is captured, immediately return it to a pawn starting position. - Time traveler: the pawn may invoke to remove itself from the board. On that players second turn after using this invoke, the pawn returns to the space it previously occupied. - Paradox: the pawn may invoke to promote itself into a copy of a piece that you control. At the start of your second turn after using this invoke, the original piece is promoted into a pawn. - Leatherworker: the pawn may invoke to capture itself. - Royal guard: The knight may invoke to move to a space next to your own king. When it does, it may then trade places with the king. - Recruiter: when the knight captures a piece, return one of your captured pawns to a space adjacent to the knight. - Assassin: the knight may invoke to move to a position from which it checks the opponents king. - Ninja: when the knight captures a piece, return the knight to a knight starting position. - Jester: The queen cannot capture or be captured - Hive queen: at the start of each of your turns, return one of your captured pawns to a space adjacent or diagonally adjacent to the queen. - Matriarch: the queen can be in check, and if it is captured, you lose the game - Combo breaker: the queen may invoke to promote into a bishop or rook. If you chose a bishop, place a rook on a space that it could normally reach from the queens position in one move. Vice versa if your chose a rook. - Bulldozer: The rook may continue moving after capturing a piece for the first time in a turn. The rook may capture allied pieces. - Fortress: The rook may invoke to become immobile. While immobile, it cannot be captured. The rook may invoke again to return to being mobile. - Totem: when the rook lands adjacent or diagonally adjacent to any number of other pieces you control, each of those pieces may make one move as part of the same turn. - Catapult: the rook may not capture normally. The rook may invoke to capture a piece up to two spaces away in any cardinal direction. - Force field: Enemy pieces may not land on spaces adjacent or diagonally adjacent to the bishop. If the bishop ends its movement adjacent to an enemy piece, that piece immediately moves one space away from the bishop. - Prophet: the bishop may invoke to take control of an adjacent piece - Zealot: the bishop has the moves of a queen. When the bishop captures a piece, the bishop is also captured. - Cleric: the bishop may invoke to capture itself and return one of your captured pieces to the space the bishop occupied.

Rule: when a rook captures a piece it is placed on top of the rook. Additionally, pieces of the same color may occupy the same space as the rook (placed on top) Invoking while a piece is on top of the rook removes the placed piece, and the player invoking may remove from the board a single piece on the same rank or file as the rook, without moving the rook

I have some ideas that people can use. Leapfrog Pawns can only capture by hopping over a piece. Cannot capture if there is a piece behind it. Bouncy Bishop Bishops can bounce off one side of the board in addition to its additional movement Right Angle Attack Rooks may invoke to move vertically, then horizontally, or vice versa, in one move. ImPawnster Pawns may invoke to steal a pieces movement when they capture it. This ability can only be used once per game, but it’s movement option is permanent Checkers All Over Again When pawns capture, they jump over a piece, then capture it, like in checkers. Cannot capture multiple pieces in one move Queen’s Last Wish When your queen is captured, destroy any opponents piece except their king. (Or) When you have no queen and your king is in check or checkmate, you may invoke it to move 2 spaces in any direction instead of one. This is permanent for the rest of the game Some of them may not be allowed cuz they involve multiple pieces, but I’ve never played this so I don’t know.

A few hot-garbage rule ideas. Suicide: "A king may invoke to immediately die, causing an immediate loss for its controller." Royal Guard: "A king may invoke and choose 1 type of piece to have all friendly pieces of that type moved to spaces adjacent to the king." Soul Swap: "A king may invoke to switch control of all pieces on the board." Decoy: "A king that is in check can invoke to swap places with any friendly piece." And one that I think is kinda cool: Chameleon: "A ___ must capture a piece by moving in the same way that piece would normally move." (I stole it from Ultima chess) Edit: Another Idea I had Castle Wall: "A rook can invoke to enter 'Castle Wall Mode'. This is represented by the rook being turned on its side. In this state, the rook can only move 1 space at a time. It cannot capture or be captured. Other pieces cannot move into or through any spaces adjacent to the rook." I'm not yet sure how to handle pieces already being next to that rook when this is activated.
