This tutorial goes into a bit more detail about my technique for playing percussive reggae guitar. I hope you get something out of it and can put it into your playing as soon as possible. As always, take the time to get the techniques to feel natural, slow and steady wins the race ;)

Toby you are god level in this; I already understood perfectly and much more than your previous video; It is true that it is not easy, but in my learning with your new indication, now I have achieved it and I have already started listening to "Funky Fingerstyle Reggae" on my guitar thanks to you.... I really appreciate it a lot

Thanks, and yes you're right. This is mostly just teaching the technique to use and abuse however you like. Where you put the grooves is up to you. I'm no reggae expert at all but still like to play it. Enjoy.

Thaks so much for sharing your talents! It's always eluded me how folks play convincing reggae on a solo acoustic guitar - your lesson has made it all simple. I've made a MuseScore document that illustrates everything in your lesson, if you'd like a copy let me know.

This video rocks. As I'm a flamenco guitarist, I use variations on this technique but for rumba tunes. Now that I've just seen One Love, I'm brushing up my Reggae rhythms. Hahaha. Thanks x 1,000 for the vid. What guitar are you playing, BTW? It sounds great.

Love it toby, by the way... my mobile is on full volume but I hear you not so loud.... maybe something with the mic? Also do you have lead ideas for.with this reggae rythm? Combined ofcourse (not with a looper)... Also the open chords are a bit more diffiuclt with the reggea strum. All the best, Max
@TobyHack-thguitarist
@TobyHack-thguitarist 2 года назад
I don’t have a problem with the volume, you may want to use headphones, hopefully that’ll be louder for you. As for lead for reggae you can use the same ideas that I used for the rumba stuff. Open chords aren’t really good for reggae, at least not the way I like to play it. It’s possible with open chords but it’s harder and doesn’t sound as good.
@maximemichiels

@@TobyHack-thguitarist yes I am trying it with open chords now 👌 bcs the Am G F E (open position), also very inspiring this lesson. And idd I use my headphones. Thx for your inspiring videos. You are helping people to grow. Take care

You just do not see a reggae band where the guitarist bangs his guitar like a bongo. The bongo player does that part. The guitarist plays a smaller but very important rhythmic part. Reggae is not a solo sport. It is about every one playing their part.
@TobyHack-thguitarist
@TobyHack-thguitarist 3 месяца назад
Yup, I’ve never seen it. But, I don’t, and never have played in a reggae band. I usually play in a duo with a singer or solo. So this is how I play to make it sound more interesting. Adding percussion while playing guitar can bring so much to the song/performance, especially when in a duo. If I was playing in a reggae band, there’s now way I’d be doing this stuff I’m teaching here, I’d play my part “the right way”. People have asked me how I do this style after they saw me do it live, so that’s why this tutorial exists. Have a great day.
