From Alex Reeves' (Nick Cave, Dizzee Rascal, Guy Garvey) course on MusicGurus;
www.musicgurus...
Session drummer Alex Reeves demonstrates an exercise aimed at less experienced drummers (but which plenty of more experienced drummers would benefit from). He focuses on playing super-simple to test your time-feel against a metronome.
This is part of a wider course on MusicGurus where Alex teaches the skills that producers and artists value like grooving with impeccable time playing tasteful fills.
The flashy stuff is for your bedroom not the studio, learn from the Pros like Alex who is a session drummer of high repute who has played with Dizzee Rascal, Bats for Lashes, The BBC symphony Orchestra, Nick Cave, Lethal Bizzle & Naz among many others.

I start every practice with a yoga type warm up on the drums,10 bpm single strokes on the click right and left feet in unison,breathing in on the 1 and 3,letting the air out on 2 and 4,very hard exercise but in time will be great for your inner clock. Slow is harder than fast.

as a guitar player and vocalist this would be a dream come true to play with this drummer. Drummers in time make playing more fun for the rest of the band.

Play as a band to a click. Also, many songs in different styles require you to play a little infront of the beat or behind. This lesson is no less valuable to a guitar player, bassist, keyboard player, or singer than a drummer. Sometimes the music calls for your drummer to play behind the beat while the bassist is ahead or vice versa. This can also be applied to vocals.

I think it's a mistake to expect the drummer to be responsible for the timing of the entire band. Does every song have drums for the entire track? Just some food for thought.

This is a great principle and lesson. People will be surprised at the difficulty here. Some constructive criticism: When Alex plays quarter and eighth note grooves, he was quietly beatboxing the 16th note subdv. This should have been explained in the video, as feeling a smaller subdivision is very helpful when there's lots of space. Great lesson all the same

Do you also recommend making saucy faces?

Saucy faces are highly recommended... Also swaying slightly, with perfectly timed hip thrusts. With the faces and the swaying/thrusting, it should look like you’re methodically dry-humping your snare drum to completion.

Great explanation for starting slow and keeping it accurate before moving onto faster and as a guitarist, i find with music that the slower tempo is much harder to keep accurate.

roger flame As I mention in my comment above, try singing/counting/feeling a smaller subdivision in your head, or out loud. e.g instead of 1 & 2 & think of 1e&a2e&a

Ive been playing over thirty years and Ive had a lot of drama in my life the last two years which has caused me to struggle with timing when playing, Ive had to forget about anything I knew and start over, sucks

Excellent exercise demonstration video :) Every time I drum, after about a minute of straight playing, my bass drum foot falls completely out of time due to leg fatigue. Do you recommend any supplementary daily exercises to help eliminate this issue? (which can be done while away from the kit)? Thanks!

Thanks. Try the same exercises but with the GapClick ...2/4 bars of silence & 2-4 bars with click.
