How To Play Piano for Beginners, Lesson 2 || Starting to Read Music

This is the second lesson in my series of "how to" piano tutorials for absolute beginners. In it, I start looking at how we read piano music, beginning with the five-line stave and the treble clef, which is usually used to notate the right hand. The piano keyboard has many more notes than there are on a single stave, so I also discuss how to read notes that lie outside the stave, using ledger lines. There is an accompanying PDF with notes and exercises.
My full "how to play piano for beginners" course consists of 21 complete lessons, with some extra videos of piano repertoire. The series covers the basics of how to play the piano, plus information on how to read music for piano. Each tutorial comes with a PDF download, and all the lessons are completely free of charge. If you're looking for the best way to learn to play the piano, this is the place to start!

Hi Bill, I hope you are still viewing your comments. I am 65 years old and my entire life have wanted to learn the piano. I remembered sitting on the front step of my best friends home listening to her take piano lessons and wishing we had a piano so that I could take lessons. I bought myself a keyboard in my 30's and tried to learn with a book but raising children made this impossible so I gave up. I have been struggling over the last 10 years with illness and sadly all my attention has been focused on trying to make it through a day relatively pain free. I finally decided I need something else to focus on that would bring me joy and so I said to myself, "What about piano lessons?". The blessings of HaShem fell upon me immediately when I found your youtube and I want you to know that this gift that you have given to so many is so valuable. I went out and bought myself a keyboard yesterday and started this morning! May you be blessed for being such a blessing! Shalom from Jerusalem!

I certainly am still viewing them - shalom from North Yorkshire! It always absolutely makes my day to hear that my videos are helping people, so thanks very much for letting me know. Good luck with the rest of the course, and please do let me know if you have any questions or run into difficulties. Long experience of seeing people going through this course suggests that those who do best are the ones who really nail down the basics and do lots of reinforcement practice of the first few lessons - that means you have a strong foundation for when things start to get a bit trickier, around lesson 9. So try to practise every day if you can, and really work hard at memorising stuff like note names on the keyboard and in treble and bass staves - it makes things way easier later on. Behatzlacha!

Hi Bill, thank you so much for this series. It has been almost 7 years since you uploaded this and I can't imagine the number of people you have taught and helped and from multiple geographies too! What I loved the most is how you made me associate "oh it's so hard and frustrating" feeling to something positive - my brain creating new circuitry and being familiar with the subject. I embrace that feeling not only with piano but with whatever I am learning and it helps me to keep pushing through and not drop things out of frustration.
@BillHilton
@BillHilton 9 месяцев назад
Thank you! Yes, I like to think it’s helped a few people. I tried doing some rough maths on this the other day, based on how many people have watched the final few videos in the series, and making allowance for random watches/curiosity/revisits etc. Anyway, I think the number of people who have actually completed is into the thousands - around five thousand, perhaps, which I’m pretty happy about. I hope you make good progress yourself - let me know how you get on!

Bill, Marge Ball here, was just reading through what some people have written, Wow there are a lot of older people starting to learn piano. I am so glad about that because it will help with the memory of people our age and also keep the bones limber. This is a great service to older people. Great job that you teach well enough for us seniors to understand and follow what we need to do to play piano.

Am new to this channel and completely new to piano as of a month ago. I was fortunate and got an acoustic piano for free. I started with piano note and simply piano and paid for both. I enjoyed simply piano until I started extremely having difficulty understanding the sheet music. You however have done An amazing job and humbled me even as I’m new and I’m going back to the basics of studying sheet music. I’ve been on this lesson for like a week and it amazes me that I didn’t know this as well as it thought or simply piano made me think. I’m looking forward to future lessons and ultimately play classical music with confidence.

One thing I have noticed that helped me is how each note will alter from being on a line and then on a space in the next octave. The middle c is on a line under the staff, the next C is on a space in the staff, the next one is back on a line. The same is true for all notes. It's another hint to make it easier to remember where each note is. I recommend hitting the keys and imagining in your mind where it is on the staff. Keep doing this for every note again and again and eventually it will start to really settle in your head. I'm still a beginner but this has helped!

I'm picking up piano again in my mid 30s after having has lessons when I was 5-7 years old. I learned how to read sheet music back then and couldn't play very complicated stuff but I had music books for the first couple of grades and I could play all the songs in there from the sheet music relatively easily. Your explanation of EGBDF brought back so many memories and as soon as I saw it I said the phrase "Every Good Boy Deserves Food" and had a wave of nostalgia since that must have been the phase my piano teacher taught me back in the day to learn the treble clef. Amazing what your mind can remember and I'm finding myself picking things up that I haven't done in almost 30 years! Can't wait to follow along with the whole course and I hope I can get to be as good as I was when I was 7 years old again haha.

Good to hear! That's the amazing thing about stuff you learn at that age: it sticks at a very deep level. You'll probably find that you actually have a small advantage in terms of physical playing over an absolute beginner at the same age as you, purely because you did that early work. Good luck, let me know how you get on and don't hesitate to shout if you have any problems/questions!

@@BillHilton Thanks Bill! I’m currently on lesson 6 but I always go back to previous lessons too. One thing I’m struggling on is reading the sheet music while playing at the same time, I usually just end up memorising what’s on the sheet and the fingering and then playing it, how do I improve on that? Thanks 🙏🏾
@BillHilton
@BillHilton 3 года назад
@@jessicamarie6448 You’re welcome! The short and boring answer to the sheet music thing is “just keep doing what you’re doing”. Everyone except the very best sightreaders (and I’m not one of those...) uses partial memorisation to some extent, so it’s not something to worry about. As you work on an increasing variety of music you’ll find that the amount you have to memorise gradually lessens. At this stage, though, it’s all about gritting your teeth, digging deep and pushing through stuff that (for now) seems tough. This is fantastic - I played violin for 6 years and could site read music decently, and even took a year of music theory in high school focusing on staff notation which I took to very well - but I'll be damned if I haven't lost most of my reading skills in the almost 10 years since. This is good for beginners to reading music but also as a refresher for someone who maybe knew it at some point and has since forgotten... I can peck out a tune with no problem but anything further is beyond me, so I'm glad to have this tool to finally learn how to use a piano in a way that is actually helpful! THANK YOU~

Every time I sat at the piano I just wanted to sit there without the music sheet and just play something beautiful but everytime I messed up I ended up pressing two keys at the same time or changing the music style I always wanted to hearing music and just produce it on the piano but I understand I have to go through a lot of processing a lot of time but with your channel it's so easy to explain that I just feels like you are talking with me in front of me thank you very much

Thanks Danny - glad it helps! 51 is at the young(ish) end of the spectrum for users of this series: I get a lot of messages from people twenty or thirty years older than you, so you're pretty much a spring chicken! Good luck, and let me know if you have any specific questions about anything. I always reply eventually...!

Just over two weeks since I first started the keyboard and I’m fairly competent with this lesson. Been doing this lesson for about 10-12 days now. Going well and sounding better! Can’t believe I’m reading off sheet music! The one issue I am having is my keyboard has letters written on 3/4’s on it and I find myself looking at the letter instead of the key as such. But thank for the lessons, going to have a little look at three now! Have been doing 15-30 minutes daily. Thankyou!
@BillHilton
@BillHilton Год назад
Glad to hear you're making progress, Jon! 15-30 mins a day is absolutely ideal. As you get more confident, the trick is not to race ahead of yourself - you need a really firm foundation to build on, so taking 5-6 days to work on each lesson is a good idea. As you get deeper into the series you might want to extend that a little. Most people seem to find that things get more challenging from around Lesson 9 onwards, so at that point you maybe want to aim to be giving each lesson at least 7 days. Shout if you run into problems or need any help at any point, and good luck!

I have been learning piano for over a year, there are lots of information I never knew about, yet used in so many events, these videos really help me, since in my country, music teaching isn't that good, Wouter Van Wijhe showed me your channel when I was having struggles practicing and trying to learn one of his covers. This really helped me and your breaking chords tutorials help me quite alot with my speed! I really am grateful for your videos, you've earned a new sub! Was a player 15 years ago and then I just stopped playing. Bought a new instrument recently to restart the old hobby but OMG I did not remember a thing! Your video is super good , just to revive those knowledge except that I actually learned the notes not by alphabets but as do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti , therefore abit challenging now but i am sure i catch up with a little practice. Just wanted to say Good Job! Very nice tutorial :)

Wow, this is amazing! Have been looking online since acquiring a digital piano for Christmas and I finally hit the jackpot! I can't believe you haven't asked for my credit card details. Thank you so much for these valuable lessons, altruism still exists, I thought it was long dead and buried!

You're really welcome! One of the reasons I created the course was that I was so annoyed by all the "...buy my awesome piano course - learn to play like Art Tatum, Elton John and Liszt in less than 40 minutes! Just $384! ($573958 value!!)"-type ads. I should say it's not entirely altruistic, either: I get a good chunk of ad revenue from the course videos. Anyhow, good luck, and give me a shout if you run into any problems/have any questions at any stage.

I'm about a week in, and I'm really surprised with the progress I've made so far thanks to these lessons. I love the structure of them, with layers of increasing difficulty. I recently discovered a love for music theory, and that made me want to learn how to play and, eventually, try and compose my own music (even though I have no clue where to start on that front). Thank you for putting these resources out here for free!

@@BillHilton Hey, I just wanted to follow up - I've been continuing on this part, and while I've nailed down levels 1 through 3 to the point where I feel confident that I could get down level 5 fairly easily, I've been having an absurd amount of trouble with level 4. Between having terrible aural skills and singing voice (making it difficult to compare the notes), it's taken the most time for the least progress. Do you have any advice, or is it just a matter of time?

Thank you for the video! I used to play trombone when I was school and tried to learn piano but couldn't get passed the grind and had no direction, im super pumped for this course. Ive been working on the pdf for this lesson for the past few days and oh my goodness is it incredibly difficult. I feel like i can read the music okay and find the notes on the keyboard well but once im trying to do both all that knowledge goes out the window. I know if i just keep practicing this it will become second nature. Im really excited to learn piano so i can play the music i love. Thank you for encouraging me and giving me a sense of direction 😊
@BillHilton
@BillHilton 5 месяцев назад
You're welcome, Elizabeth! You should find that your previous experience is a big help, but mostly in the early days it really is just a case of grinding through and nailing down skills that need to become second nature. Keep pushing through, and you'll be fine: lots of people have finished this course, and those that do are those who just keep working at it even when it seems progress is slow. You might find this recent video useful if you haven't seen it - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rJwY4JEG9_Y.html - it's basically an overview of the most common problems self-teaching piano players face, and it grew out of conversations I've had over the years with people who have been through this course. It covers most of the major stumbling blocks. If you run into any problems or have any questions at any stage, just give me a shout. Good luck!
