Quick way to get your footing on the keyboard: the black keys are in alternating groups of two and three. Think of eating utensils. What utensil has three tines? Fork. Fork starts with F. So, everywhere you see the three tines, the white key immediately to the left of the first tine is an F. With the two tines, think chopsticks, which starts with C, so every white key to the left of the two tines is a C.

Guy, at this point I just wanted to give my most heartfelt respects and appreciation to you. I started music production over 12 years ago, at the tender age of 12. Over the years, I learned "what kinda works" and were able to eventually get commercial work with that. But I always felt that there is so much more to do, explore and create if only I could wrap my head around theory a bit more. If only most lessons out there weren't so dry or just awfully presented... I found your "Learn Music Theory" course three days ago and I'm amazed by how much fun learning is with your videos. A few lessons in and so many blind spots were filled, I wish I could just play around with my new knowledge the whole day. And all of that for not even 30 bucks? Feels like ripping you off. From a human being to another human being: A grateful, humble >>THANK YOU

I learned to play "properly". Scales, finger exercises, sight-reading. Recently got given a stack of fun music books for piano & organ. All chord + single line melody. Opened book. Played, Simples. Wish someone had taken this approach with me when I started out learning piano. So rewarding so quickly, we teach newbies the wrong way.

Mr. Michelmore, I've just recently discovered your charming channel, as a self rediscovery of sorts led me to find it. I play multiple instruments. My first ever instrument as a child in the 1980's, were two different 32 key Casio keyboards. My first one had a sort of ROM song memory switchable cartridge, and had lights on above they keys to teach you Greensleeves, or Hey Jude or whatever. My second was that one Casio that famously "sampled" audio with a built in mic. Mostly as a child I would peck about attempting my own renditions of John Williams' famous works among others. Although I had no real lesson training or idea of what I was doing? I eventually pushed away from keys/piano and pursued more "popular" instruments, such as the drums, bass, and guitar circa the 1990's, and for some odd reason? I couldn't explain how all three of those instruments seemingly came to me quite easily to be honest. All by ear. Enough even to have had a decent go at a career over a decade or more ago. I never really figured out why it was that I could seemingly pick up those three instruments naturally like that, but then, just recently, it dawned on me. As a child? I had inadvertently trained my ear via Casio, by copying (to my best abilities) the works of Carl W. Stalling, John Williams, Goldsmith, and Prokofiev's Peter & the Wolf (a personal favorite record as a child). Apparently? Once I had discovered The Beatles, and then moved into my teenage years? I was then ready to subjectively fly blind through it all. It's absolutely bonkers really, but explains it quite well. Currently however, and upon recently discovering the advantages of MIDI? Much with your help? I have now found myself within a completely fresh new world of symphonic inspiration that feels like coming round full circle. My free copy of Spitfire's BBC symphony orchestra Discover arrives next weekend. I honestly can't wait! Cheers & Many Thanks!!

7:46 - watching you move effortlessly into the thicker jungle of the dreaded black notes, I am irresistibly reminded of my father's story [on this one occasion, a true one] of Irving Berlin's transposing piano: this beast - a real piano - used a wheel to move the keyboard in relation to the strings so that he could get the right sounding notes while playing everything in the key that came most naturally to him - which was, of course - F#.......what? As he said, "The black keys are right there, under your fingers. The key of C is for people who study music."

I’ve always learned how to play piano by just sitting down in front of one and start making music. From an early age I could always just sit at a piano and improvise within a mode or scale. I played the music for my sisters art show only because there happened to be a Piano there - so I just started improvising and creating compositions off the cuff for a few hours. Unfortunately, I never learned how to play chords properly or technique. But now that my musical ideas are getting more complex, I’m more inclined to learn about chords. But still, I’m more of a melody person. I think that’s why non western, old medieval and other early music appeals to me so much.
