Great tutorial.... It's time to bust out the Classical, change the strings, oil her up and get to business.... 6:56 LOL.... Dominic once called it the "chord from hell"...
Play it over and over and over then. If you fingers are hurting, it’s because you haven’t worked enough on stretch chords in the past. Like anything, it gets easier as you do it more and eventually, you’ll forget it was difficult for you 😉
If you’ve been playing long it won’t take long. But also, finger picked stuff like this is great to learn. You learn more of the mechanics; what’s going on. Tho it seems daunting it really isn’t. That’s the secret to finger picked stuff, in a lot of ways it’s easier. I learned this song in about half a day, not perfect, and I did it mostly by ear. Took a week of obsessing but I nailed it. But that comes with time and patience. I’m here because I wanted to make sure I’m dead on. That’s the thing with guitar. It’s all being patient and just sticking to it. The song will be in your league one day, before you even realize it.
I've been on this for about 10 days. An hour a day mostly. Some notes throughout don't ring out like I want yet. I am determined to be patient and build muscle memory. I know it takes time after time of revisiting it. It's a beast! Playing it slowly as I can stand, then trying full tempo too much like we all do. Thank you for the great lesson. Making my guitar playing better for sure. MY HAND HURTS in a good way!
Hello mate, i've never played guitare myself and really wanna start by this fabulous song. It probably is my most favourite song of all time and I want to know how to play it. I started like 1 hour ago and my wrist hurt for sure. But it is really amazing to see how you can make a guitare sing in just an hour. I hope you did manage to learn it Have a good day
Do you have any advice? For the first chord when I put my first thinger on the 6 on the G string, the furtherst I can get my pinky is just barely the 9 on the B
Honestly, I think it was easier for me, because I play lots of bossa nova and mpb, which usually has lots of these crazy chords and positions that envolves a hard stretch. I actually advise any starting guitar player, even the ones who are not from Brasil and don't like this genre to check it out, it's great for learning new techniques, use of the thumb, finding new chords, and changing from to weird positions on the guitar.
Damn! I’m 59 and you have brought me back into playing and have not stoped for going on 2years! You have inspired me and can not thank you enough! Even purchased a new Taylor 214 ce and lookin at a 324ce or 524ce once I’m able! You are, in my opinion the best player/instructor on RU-vid! Thank you!!
You know what you did? You inspired me to start playing again after about 20 years of abstinence. The guy who wrote this piece is a genius, and so are you, breaking this down in an understandable way. I probably won't master this but as you said it is a fantastic workout. Thank you so much!
So creepy weird and coincidental that he posted the lesson for this song when I literally was just listening to it yesterday and wanted to learn how to play it. 😳
EXCELLENT - why would anyone put a thumbs down - beats me - obviously take offence at someone playing really well ? - I've played over 50 years professionally - this guy never deserves a thumbs down
Man …..I don't need to tell you about the difference a high quality instrument and a proper setup makes in terms of playability. On my cheap guitar, I cannot afford to relax my pinky a bit and allow it to rest closer to the middle of the fret like he does here and still produce a decent tone. Because I'm forced to play every note as close as possible to the fret wire, those finger twisters he talks about are incredibly difficult to pull off and sound relatively clean. Same applies for the barring parts. That being said, what an incredible composition by Dominic Miller though! And what a great lesson to help students learn such an iconic tune! Despite the obvious hindrances, I was able to learn the basics of the tune in a few hours. In a few days time I was able to play the majority of the song and sing along with it!
it's an amazing guitar part. you can see the stevie ray vaughan influence, strangely. The Lenny chord is in there and all those stretches and unresolved chords, especially at the end, are like Riviera Paradise. Always loved this song, it's on another level.
I find it awesome that Dominic Miller actually wrote this piece for the purpose of practice and when Sting heard it he insisted they make it into an actual song.
I would give a lot to be able to play this magnificent piece. Correction: I will give a lot (of time) up until I'm be able to play this magnificent piece. Signed: the guy who played 1001 times each of your 3 videos for the Since I've been loving you tutorial.
One of my most favorite songs and again the best tutorial of it by far! Man since I've found you on Yt I no longer look for any other instructors, to me you're non-comparable to others! Many many thanks!!
This is one I'm going to sink my heart into, such melodic playing, done exquisitely beautiful. I tell many of my friends to watch your channel. Another best from your tutorials. In my opinion, the Best on RU-vid! 🎶🎸🎶🎸🎶🎸🎶🎸🎶🎸🎶👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I am so happy that you have finally figured out how to provide TABs for your lessons. These make a huge difference and will add to your popularity! Yea!!!
First of all, and this is my first comment on one of your videos and long overdue, I want to say your videos are amazing and you are amazing. Keep doing what you’re doing. You’re playing is terrific but the talk track including some history on the song/guitarist and insights is equally excellent. I’ve been learning this great song and want to say i discovered another option on how to play the “want to make you give up chord”. As im playing in that chord shape, i start off just like you but then I slide my pointer finger up a fret to get that hard to reach note on the high E string without moving anything else and then play the last note on the B string.
Thank you so much for your lessons on here, they are absolutely fantastic! I worked on your "I Don't know why" lesson first for at least a month and am starting to slowly get there now, not sure how long this one will take but it's been a long time I wanted to play this so I'm sure I'll get there with your superb break downs! Kudos and thanx again!
I tried this exact lesson around a year ago and couldn’t do it at all. After a year of on and off practice I came back to it and picked it up within an hour. Very hyped about it🙏🏽
At this time I'm thinking 'I'll never be able to do that'! I'll let you know when I've got it! Fantastic tutorial though. Beautifully played and taught well.
You played this so nice and cleanly and it really highlights what a stunning little bit of guitar work it is. Sounds simple but is actually complex in it's make up and twists and turns all over the place.
Thank you very very much for your effort and enthusiasm in teaching all these pearls of good music! I'm learning a lot from you and respect u a lot....wish u all the best
You are an awesome player and teacher, thanks for sharing. I have enjoyed learning some complicated stuff that you have videos of, it helps a lot to see someone play them the right way first. Your accuracy and chord choices are right with the original songs and artists. Most people may not recognize that playing just cowboy chords adds nothing to the original compositions, it makes them sound flat and boring. 🎸🎸
I’m watching Leon the Professional right now because of this, and after I’m learning it (some background, this song was used in Leon the Professional(1994 classic film) which gave it so much meaning)
Finally, i didnt have any new thing in my repertuar for a long time. You are the only teacher on youtube, that actually teaches the song perfectly. Last one, the rolling stones one wasn't in standard tuning and i was disappointed... Thanks for this classic!
So interesting how fretting the D note at A5 vs the open D string changes the sound. The fretted note is thicker and rounder, and noticeably anchors the chord over the open D.
Have to use the cheat code. Small arthritic fingers, not gonna beat myself up. Wasn't paying attention when you said there was a bit of a bass added in, thought I was missing notes haha
Thanks Andy ! You made my little fingers getting crazy but what a satisfaction to be able to play this lovely song !!!... good job as usually ! I really enjoy your way of teaching and I want you to know that my english comprehension is getting better from day to day thanks to your explanations .Best regards from France !!
Thank you, ive tried for one night and it is started muuuch easier to understand what is going on and how to play this lovely song ❤Now im gonna practice for a while 😅
God bless you brother for taking the time to gift this ethereal vibration my guitar collecting dust for months just recently deciding to tackle fresh composition deciding on 3 songs composed by Sting starting with this Jewel. Thank you sincerily Mickey Czopka Los Angeles
finally some tutorial who figured the transposed part out. Thank you veeery much! This brought me the little, but important missing parts I wanted so much.
Thanks. I put a lot of time and effort into making these videos. I like to keep them free for those that can't afford it, but if you can, please support what I do. Cheers, Andy www.shutupandplay.ca/donate.html
@@ShutupAndPlayGuitarTutorials missed opportunity to host the website at "shut up and pay" LOL Thanks for the tutorial, I'll get this eventually. Such beautiful work by Dominic here
You look very happy teaching, it's like a friend who's going to show you something, you make the lesson very friendly, and your tricks are wonderful, I introduce some Brazilian chords, since a have a classical guitar, beautiful... really.
I've noticed on that live vid you mention that instead of barring the 4th fret on the end of the main descending pattern, he brings his middle finger down to catch that off note on the G string. Good for me as I have problem getting that to ring out but I wonder why he does it
Dude, this is the most perfect lesson ever. I love how you play back after pretty much every new explanation of a part. I have said this often but I am really glad I am at the level where I am at currently in terms of technical proficiency and how quick I can learn new things. I have just watched your video while eating eggs and I bet if I focus real hard I can play 60% of the new stuff in the next 1 or 2 tries already. That's how well you explain this stuff and repeat it showing it's place in the greater whole. I also agree with everything you said at the end about the workout and such, I have pretty big hands but jesuschrist I need to really stretch and be warm for this great exercise haha. That's how I tend to write as well. "can my fingers still do this after some practicing and does it sound cool" is kinda my motto. tl;dr u just gained a lifelong subscriber guy if this is like exemplatory of ur videos
Thank you for this lesson, dear sir. I have been dreaming about playing this song ever since i saw "Leon the professional". Thank you, thank you, thank you...
