How To Play Slap Bass #4 The Muted Palm Slap (like Mark King or Les Claypool)

Check out the lesson material over at Talkingbass: www.talkingbas...
The latest in the How To Play Slap Bass series of lessons. This video covers the fretting hand muted palm slap that can be used to play percussive slap riffs and fills and can help you play all those lightning fast triplets like Mark King and Victor Wooten.
Incidentally, the double slap triplet I cover at the end of the lesson is the same motion used by Les Claypool in his bass solo on Tommy The Cat

I have a friend who lives in a dark depressive world. He lost one eye to cancer and the other only has peripheral vision, yet with some effort he can watch a video. When I spoke with him the other day he told me he wanted to play slap bass, but could not begin to understand how. Mark, you will help him out of that dark hole he lives in. I can't even imagine how excited he will be when he gets your videos. Thank you.

Really really AWESOME lessons, by the way. Taking from very basic and expanding it to the most sofisticated, also teaching how to aplly the things into your own licks instead of teaching a simple lick the dies there. I'm learning so much from all these videos, I've seen all of them. Thank you so very much.

this is awesome! i was a drummer before i picked up bass, but i was too scared to try this technique. i didnt realize how similar it is to actually drumming! like fills are 99% just rudiments so it makes it easy to transfer from the wrists to the fingers, its making me think about playing around with some of the more obscure rudiments!

I've had that Ibanez since '92 and I still love the fast neck. It's not so good for certain gigs but for the quick technical stuff it works a treat. I don't really listen to what other people say about basses. People talk crap. Whatever works for you and the gig you're doing is right.

First of all, what a great lesson! I'm spanish and I got everything 100% good, such a great teacher! Now I have a question, I have been playing the electric guitar for 4 years and a half now and recently a friend of mine sold me his bass so I picked it up and started learning a few songs on it and it is going to be 3 weeks now since I play the bass guitar, and the thing is that I can play al the styles you taught quite good therefore that makes me think I am doing well with the bass playing. Now the question is: Do you recommend me to keep on playing more seriously or are this just some begginer tecnichal lessons?

Every time I try the palm slap either a note or harmonic rings out instead of a dull thud. Please explain how to get the dull thud note a bit more, it seems a number of people have this problem.

Watch exactly how my hand moves. Don't press down. Just smack with the fingers in the area of the knuckle half way down towards the palm. Move the hand almost as a whole. Not just from the knuckle.

Hey man, great lesson! I have a question though, I really can't get the sound needed for ex. 1. How much I try, with all different kinds of stiffness of the hand, power, whatever.. I always make at least a bit of fret sound with it. Any magic trick? Practicing doesn't seem to help, cause I don't know where to improve!

You don't need a great instrument to sound good. This tells me that much. But It is logical. You don't get endorsements sounding lousy on basic instruments. If you got talent, you make the instrument sound great, not the other way around. Seems nowadays people make videos more about the instruments, not about the talent. Not to put down anyone, but what I want to say is that if you have talent, you will get good sound from pretty much anything.
