Sorry about that, Tulok. I mentioned it originally because I thought it was missing, but upon rewatch, I heard you say that you went Monk 8, and deleted my comment. Again, sorry about that
Hey, you missed Monk level 8 on the graphic. Just figured you might want to eyeroll. Thanks for the videos, and keep doing what you do. Edit: honestly, I wouldn’t have noticed if you hadn’t said anything.
Hey you, maker of builds! Spend hours of your life creating a dnd build for a character that would be hard to adapt from a media that’s mostly obscure. This would greatly validate me and maybe five other people. Thank you.
Sokka dumping strength is canonically accurate. He's not exactly strong, that's why he uses tools and ingenuity. And his sword master prioritized Sokka's strengths and added dexterity on top of that.
This build, along Treffy's, showcases one of the best atributes of kensei monks: turning low damage weapons into WMD. Whips, daggers and boomerangs go from 1d4 to potentially 1d12+1d4, and that's both rad and funny at the same time, kinda like Sokka!
Monk is a cool way to make him good with the boomerang, I was imagining battle master + mastermind since you can still get calligraphy with BM, but BM's boomerang doesn't hit as hard and doesn't fit his swordsman training as well as kensei. Great build!
You saved the best member of Team Avatar for last and I’m really happy with how Sokka turned out. Monk rogue is a fun combo. I had no idea that there was an official boomerang, figured there was going to be an artificer dip for returning weapon. This build is way more cohesive though.
The only official boomerang we have is Storm Boomerang from Princes of the Apocalypse. If you remove the Storm elements of the item, and the return on a miss, you get what Tulok describes in the video. DnDBeyond has what Tulok described plus the return on a miss as a simple weapon and they list it as part of the Basic Rules despite it not being there. A 60/120 ranged thrown 1d4 weapon puts the dart to shame. The only thing the dart has going for it is finesse so it can be used with Str.
@@JaelynMcgee Honestly he's basically more of an artificer than Asami is in terms of combat. Asami mainly makes vehicles which she doesn't use for combat, and her fighting comes from martial arts and the shock glove that she got from her father but then made some improvements with. Sokka built and fought with a war balloon, a sword, and armor for Appa.
You know it's nice of sokka to let the ones who aren't proficient in calligraphy some time to shine. That's the markings of a true leader allowing those not as powerful to shine.
While I love this build, I feel the need to point out that Sokka cannonically puts on armor when preparing for major combat. He usually isn't wearing armor, but he wears it when he knows a major fight is coming. So a Battle Master Fighter instead of Monk levels would be another viable way to go. In this instance, simply swap your Int and Wis scores. Just a thought, love the series you're doing! Keep up the great work!
I don't know why Tulok thinks Sokka has a criminal background and is trained in martial arts, but the canon Sokka gets his skills from being a hunter (ranger), weapons smithing (artificer), and being formally trained in swordfighting (battle master).
@@amiiboacid4785 "Arctic" is even an official terrain. And it would come up in an average game about as often as Sokka's abilities to track in snow did :T
I always love characters that's just a basic dudes doing awesome stuff the best they can like Rick O'Connell and Sokka And don't think we didn't notice Tulok, trying to finish up a lot of the teams still unassembled
Excellent build to see! Was not expecting the Rogue levels but definitely thought either Battlemaster or Kensei monk. Since the build seems to have some stat increase space, it might not be unreasonable to replace one of them with the Martial Adept feat to get a couple Battlemaster maneuvers anyway.
Hey Tulok I’ve been watching your videos for years now and I would really be interested to see how you would build Ardbert from Final Fantasy 14 I’m thinking a little bit of paladin thrown in there for the fell Cleves.
Very nice. I was expecting two levels in articifer for the Returning Weapon Infusion. With a background in a Tool for Calligraphy. But the monk and rogue levels were a surprise...
Dude I love your channel and your builds I'm currently trying to brainstorm how to build Ekko from Arcane/LoL Could you make a video on how you would do that? I know you probably have gotten this and tons of other requests already but I would really appreciate that. Either way you're doing awesome and can't wait to see more from you
Reading the comments, I see a lot of good arguments for a lot of different classes and subclasses. It goes to show you that Sokka is a fairly versatile character and rather difficult to build with all of his abilities. Personally, I'd have tried to work in a level of Bard for Vicious Mockery and poetry, complimenting a Charisma that made at least two women fall in love with him, one of them being the moon. That said, that's a potentially bad investment just to get one level of Bard.
God... im so terrified to watch this. I got inspired by this channel to fuck around wjth building existing characters, and at this point, of the handful ive put real major effort into, Sokka is the last one you hadnt eventually gotten to. (And also the one i spent the most time on). Im legitimately scared to see how yours completely blows mine out of the water. (For the record, i think I went with like... Kensei 6, Swords Bard 5, and like 5 levels of Battlemaster, and then struggled to nail where i wanted the other 4 levels, but i THINK i went Monk 8 and Fighter 7 for ASIs, Evasion, more Maneuvers, and, oddly, Know Your Enemy.)
Before watching build I'm guessing artificer (at least partially) considering he literally invented hot air baloons and submarines. edit: Rouge/Monk makes much more sense in hindsight lol. Good build, sounds fun
I always saw Sokka as more of a Battlemaster fighter than a monk. He gained his fighting prowess by studying under the previous generation of warriors, he has studied his enemy, and he uses creative maneuvering to win fights. You know he took a bunch of feats.
I believe RAW the boomerang only returns to you if you miss with it.... could take a 2 level dip into artificer for infusions. sure the spells aren't exactly in character, but you can make your space sword an enhanced weapon, and your boomerang a returning weapon, and it means you won't be double dipping on evasion.
Sokkas a goofball but 2 of his best traits are tactics and invention, it's MAD but I might give him a backstory for tools proficiency or even sacrifice a level to get Artificer too Sokka forged Appa's armor for spirits sake
Still pulling for Eglantine Price (Bednobs and Broomsticks) Winifred Sanderson (Hocus Pocus), Counselor Troi (Star Trek: tNG), Mary Poppins, and the Reverend Doctor Syn (The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh). Bugs Bunny would be good too. Sir Dragonet King Arthur's court jester (Idylls of the King/ Morte d'Arthur) would be wonderful.
Nice. I did a Sokka build not too long ago, but I used Battlemaster fighter for those tactical maneuvers instead of Kensei. It didn't feel right to me to give him even monk levels of magic, and really he feels more like a high intelligence low wisdom kind of guy to me. He also uses a much wider array of weapons than monks, even Kensei get, and when he knows he's going into a big battle gets some armor. That said, I can respect using Kensei to represent the space sword, and I don't think your way of doing it is bad. Just emphasizes different aspects of the character.
Prediction before video starts; Ok, this is one I’ve thought about a bit harder than others Battle master feels the most in line with Sokka’s character But I can see him getting just 2 levels of Artificier to get a returning weapon (Boomerang) I could see a Kensai monk, but since Sokka is explicitly not a bender I don’t think he should be a monk. He doesn’t martial arts so much as fight with weapons, ergo Fighter. I could also see something like Bard to give inspiration to his teammates because he’s the idea guy, but eh? IDK Flash of inspiration could do the same, but he doesn’t fit any of the other artificer subclasses, so I don’t think it’d work. So final guess 18 lvls Battlemaster, 2 lvls Artificer. Oh and Varient Human
Ok, I was way off, totally always forget Mastermind Rogue is there all the time. And I know I argued against Kensai monk, but I forgot about the Calligraphy, so that’s on me. I must repent to the Gods of Ink and Brush for me transgressions.
Nice build. I was just gonna go 20 levels of battlemaster, with the outlander background, as a varient-human with the skilled feat; but your build is more interesting. ... I allmost did a dip into bard or artificer, but Saka isn't a caster.
Faewild Hobgoblins would also be a fun race for this build. With the additional help actions effects. Guessing this was scripted before they where relased.
A few years ago my wife played Soppa. Just a rip off of Sokka and she also chose Mastermind Rogue. I understand the choice for adding monk but full mastermind felt perfect for him
You finally did! The last member of Team Avatar has a video! I was surprised by the monks levels, thinking you would go for Fighter - Battle Master. Then I remembered, Kensei Monks ALSO get calligraphy (canon!). I was also thinking there might be an artificer level or two, because he does some gadget stuff, in as much as there are "gadgets" in AtLAB.
I feel like you release these to spite me. I just got done with a level 20 level with the Gaang and I couldn't find a good build for Sokka. Well, I'll have him for the final moments now lmao.
Honestly, I thought you were going Captain America and go 3 level of Eldritch knight for weapon bond. But as Sokka doesn't do magic, I think you made the right choice.
You know what? I want a Sokka solo show. Like he and the gang are all adults and they're all busy with their own things but Sokka I don't know uncovers some plot and the rest of the gang are handling their own problems or fighting bigger fish or running nations. So it's just Sokka as this awkward adult who doesn't feel like the adult in the room but has to be and it's just this point where his advanced wisdom for his age, personality, and skill set both humble and empower him to another level.
A request that will never be fulfilled, but I'd love to see your take on: Steve Irwin and/or Jack Hanna. I know they are real people, but kind of also self-made characters.
Personally, I'd go battlemaster instead we've seen Sokka wearing armor in the show when its appropriate. No doubt Sokka would wear something like a chainmail shirt or skin tight leather armor under his cloths for added protection. Get some studded leather swap monk for battlemaster fighter, and start having fun supporting your allies with things like commanders strike while giving them advantage with the bonus action help.
First off all, I must ask you about your interpretation of calligraphy, because, apparently with Sokka, his definition of calligraphy would include smearing ink all over his face and rolling it all over the parchment. (I mean, I guess he has done some better penmanship than that, and calligraphy is likely the closest he'll get to becoming an artist, but that was the first thing that came to mind.) Secondly, I'll just say that if we could go further (or if you had good rolls if you rolled these stats), he would also definitely have the Inspiring Leader feat. But, nonetheless, he's a smart boy, a swift boy, a nigh touchable boy, just an all around good boy.
Me the guy who uses the curve of the boomerang to get the flanking bonus on the enemy. The DM who is cool enough to let me do it with a dexterity save.
Not gonna lie, Stillness of Mind is nice and all, but lvls 7 and 8 of Monk might be better as 2 levels of fighter, or just two more levels of rogue, or heck even drop the last level of Rogue and take three levels of Ranger.
