The Lydian Concept
The IV Chord (Subdominant) in C Major is F Major7. It is spelled F A C E
The scale we apply to this chord is a C Major scale starting on F (The lydian mode):
F G A B C D E F B is the lydian note - The characteristic note of this mode.
The Lydian Triad is G Major:
D (6 on Major7 and 13 on a dominant)
B (#4, b5, #11)
G (9)
The Lydian b7 Concept
In blues the Lydian approach applies even though we are dealing with dominant chords.
The IV Chord in a C blues is F7. It is spelled F A C Eb
We can make this lydian by applying the lydian Mode with a flat 7.
F G A B C D Eb F
You can also make this a jazz scale derived from mixolydian with b5 or #11 etc. and it is still called lydian b7
F G A B C D Eb E F
The lydian Triad (G Major) is the same and it should be applied.
Target the lydian note! Get used to it. Claim it! Make it your sound! Transpose this idea to all 12 keys!
Enjoy!
