How to Play the Harmonica 

Hi Kerin, thank you so much for making this amazing wealth available to Harmonica Enthusiasts. I've been playing The Amazing Grace and the Silent Night for the Local Nursing Home Neighbors and churches for the past 20 yrs. with almost no lessons or understanding of how it works. But, by the Grace of God, it's been coming out. And, amazingly, my audiences, especially the elderly and other shut in and lonely people always seem to love it! Now, thanks to you, I understand my harmonica much better, and maybe able to add a bunch of new songs to my repertoire. I was looking for something like these lessons for all these yrs., thank you from the bottom of my heart. I know you're helping many, judging by the number of replies. And I know that there are probably many others like me who will be able to share and spread the joy, and that's Priceless! God's Blessings |:D

check the website of ur harmonica and learn its' notes if you don't even have a brand name on it then download a music tuner app to your phone then learn the notes by urself

@@KerinGedge Yes, that is exactly why I'm learning harmonica! I love music and have very mild asthma, so it's 2 birds with 1 stone!

Playing harmonica is really REALLY good for asthma! It's excellent excercise, and a great way to learn to control your breathing. I'm asthmatic, and it's fantastic Therapy.

I too have asthma, and personally, the harmonica has done more good than bad for my health, I’m still confused as to why mine plays the notes in reverse order though.

Thanks for that, I appreciate the sentiment... that's exactly why I persist in making animations rather than video... I feel a lot of video tutors (on almost any subject) forget how intimidating their skill can seem to beginners!

That comes with practice im afraid... after a while you get a feel for the distance between holes and it becomes second nature

I'd say learn chromaric harmonica, but even then you'll only be able to play the minor keys relative to the major key the harmonica is is... e.g. chromatic harminica in c major will allow you to play in a minot etc.

Yeah, i've got some harmonicas that do that! A Hohner Marine Band is good to begin with, they're about $50 in NZ so probably around $30 in the US...

+mycheetos14 it's either a cheap harmonica or you have a broken reed, sorry:(

+Fresh Blossom It can also be wrong technique. When drawing on the 7 hole, the tip of your tongue needs to be further away from your front teeth (i.e. further back in your mouth) than when playing the lower notes.

I've never had this issue.

@@KerinGedge There is a very specific tongue position that allows you to play all draw notes nice and clean except 7, 8 and 9. Beginning players who have this issue can fix it by lowering their tongue and moving it a little further back.

I've probably been doing that unconciously... why don't you do a tutorial on it and I'll share it on my community page?

breathing in and breathing out are two completely different things! :) breathing in means you breath in. You can call it sucking if you want but it's not really sucking because you're breathing at the same time. you don't breathe in when you suck on a lolly pop for example, so you breathe in through your harmonica, not suck on.
