An important trick for newbies is that each ‘position’ is also based off a caged chord shape. Thinking of it this way makes it much easier to conceptualise and understand what you’re actually playing. The secret to being the guitarist you want isn’t a new pedal or guitar or amp. It’s about learning how the fretboard is laid out and learning how chords, notes and intervals interact. No voodoo, just intentional study

What a great lesson. I know my shapes but haven't practiced like that with them. I have been moving the shapes, but sometimes I get lost of where, or what key I started from Is a way to always know and not get lost.😅

I'm 65 and I've only been playing for 2 years if you can believe that. I didn't take lessons but the first thing I taught myself was all five pentatonic shapes forwards, backwards, up, down. Then I taught myself all seven diatonic shapes up, down and sideways. Then, I put on backing tracks in any key and started combining the various Pentatonix and diatonic shapes and the different parts, and it was really exciting. But the trick is, as you said, is making it musical. This will give me another way to approach it.

I'm the same age, and one year in on my guitar journey, and can attest your statements above. You're right trying to make music and also trying to play other people music. This is the next hurdle. I hear a lot the traids is the next key, so I'm starting my work on them. Good luck.

@@mabblers Thank you for sharing. God bless you for pursuing your interest in guitar at this age. I look at all these people who started at 10 or 12 years old or in their late teens and I wish I would have begun sooner, but I guess it's not too late. 2 1/2 years ago when I started, it was during covid and I fell into that mode where I wanted to have several guitars. I started buying reluctant custom shop Fenders and Gibsons. I made the mistake of buying 20 guitars in 21 months because I thought it would make me a better player. I realize only PRACTICE can do that. I'm grateful to say I stopped at 20 and haven't purchased a guitar in over 2 years and I never will purchase another one. It was a phase I went through. I foolishly thought if I buy a signature it would make me sound or be like them.

@@lamontprospect9974 On my birthday 12/19 late year I told myself I was going to learn guitar. I bought mine in a pawnshop, and the guy said that when you started playing better you'd want a newer guitar. A two months later I bought a acoustic Indian and four months later I bought a Gretsch. I love this one the best, but still play the first electric Austin. I've gone through the trying to learn faster too. Some folks are really, really and teach great, and others are great and really teach poorly. I'm a am a little gun shy not on spending more money on teaching lessons. I have soooo much material saved that if I learn a 10th of them as this stated for doing the pentatonic's I will reach my goal. I have in mind to get two more guitars, a 24 fret one and a 12 string one. Then I will be done with buying any more of them for a very long time. Practicing is the only way to get better, and especially getting past the barriers that hang us up. For me Barre chords, Traids, Areppagieos, and People songs. I going to tackle one by one, now that I'm getting the beginning principles down. Rock on Bro. We'll do it.

Bro you deserve more views. The set up is sick, the guitar’s sick, you’re playing is sick, and it’s great quality. Can’t wait to come back to this once I feel like I’m ready to start soloing

When you see those 5 CAGED “boxes”, you should see 1-b3-4-5-b7 first, and then add in 2-(3)-6-b5, and finally b2-b6-7-(3). Start in the keys of EADGC, then all keys.- So in the key of E for starters, see E-G-A-B-D as 1-b3-4-5-b7 in ALL 5 POSITIONS.- Do this over a one-chord backing track of E minor 7; and also E Dominant 7 in which you must play b3 UP into 3 which is a chord tone. - That major 3rd is a must over the Dominant 7 chord, and a MUST-NOT over the Minor 7 chord.

I know all five shapes forwards and backwards but I'll try playing each shape on one string and hopefully it'll work out. Thank you. ❤️🕊️🙏

Just so I understand, you're taking all five shapes, and playing each one on individual strings? Or are you only taking the first shape and playing that on different strings?
@jesseglickmusic
@jesseglickmusic 20 дней назад
yup, so you can see when I started going on the individual strings, I started from the first note on the Low E string from the first position (third fret). You can then take that same shape and play it starting from the third fret on the A string, and then from the second fret on the D string, etc.

@@jesseglickmusic Thank you. You have done a great job of learning that and it definitely reflects in your style of play.
