I think that's the Cannonball trill? Which is virtually the same thing..

I was watching an old movie. Rock Around The Clock about Bill Haley and the Comets. Freddy and the Bell Boys came on playing some songs, and their sax player played a trill on a alto sax. B flat top side key. I have been playing it for a while now.

Isn't that also known as the Cannonball Adderley trill?

The Adderley trill usually ascends chromatically to the target note. But yes, this is how it's achieved.

The same basic concept, but the Cannonball trill is more complex - it goes up chromatically. I was listening to classic rock last weekend and heard this trill played by 3 different sax players, so thought I would do a tutorial on it. I actually did a tutorial on the Cannonball version of it a couple years ago: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-C_2A4fTwe7g.html

It was interesting to hear you talk about taking your hand off the keys. I've been working on a piece where I have to leap from A to high F#. I realized it was easier to play if I move my left hand up so I'm holding the A and B keys with my middle finger and ring finger, then my index finger is free to hit the front F key. But it feels so wrong! What would you suggest for a leap like that?

I think Peter Gunn by Blues Brothers has that trill ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9DgFOsEs-kE.html ... I always wondered how they do it. Thanks, Scott!

Yeah, that's it. I think the sax player also adds a growl on it also. I think that's Blue Lou Marini .
