This is by far the best tutorial on how to play for a beginner I found. No joke, I looked at dozens and none explained it so well and made it so accessibly.
I'm overwhelmed by the positive responses to this video. Thank you all for watching! I've started a new series of educational videos on my channel. Here's one where I teach you how to play 5 note songs. Much love and happy practicing! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m-G-POh2QqA.html
Hi adam, first of all thank you very much for your helpful video’s! And secondly I wanted to ask you how do you change pitches from C to G to an octave higher C without changing any of your finger positions? Like what you do at 8:33
@@kendralane155 you have to get valve oil, which you can find at any music store, and unscrew the valve to oil it. Don’t pour it from the bottom of the trumpet, as it does not work and just makes a mess
My daughter heard me say I had thought about playing a trumpet so she brought me one for father's day. I have ben looking at videos. I am making sounds with the trumpet but i do not think thry are the right sounds. Will keep looking at your video. At 61 this is going to be interesting
Turning 31 this month, and I just picket up a trumpet for the first time in my life. For all you kids getting into this please take it seriously, music is really important for a balanced life. Here to learning! Thanks for the video dude, you've got a knack for it that's for sure.
Couldn't agree more. I'm a 38 year old musician who has always loved music but sometimes let's life get in the way. The bottom line for me is that I realized recently I can't be happy unless I'm practicing my instruments and making music on a regular basis.
I just turn 49 i started to play the trumpet in six grade and quit after 8th grade. I thought about getting another trumpet and start playing it again, just to see if it will all comeback to me.
Finally, someone describing different breaths for low /high parts of the octave. Nice job. Long time musician helping the little guy learn trumpet for the first time. Thank you for teaching us both. Subbed
My 4th grader is learning for the first time and was trying forever to just get sound. We watched this video together and he got it in less than 3 minutes. The look in his eyes when he hit a note! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
I'm 79 years old and wanted to play the trumpet in High School, but got stuck playing the Tuba ('cause they had too many trumpet players). I'm getting a trumpet soon and will be following your videos.
Fantastic news! My very first trumpet student ever was an 80 year old beginner, who spent his whole life playing polkas on the drums. At least you have some brass playing experience. Good luck, keep in touch on the progress!
My daughter is starting out on the trumpet and you are an amazing teacher.. I watched the video with her and found myself doing the exercises with her. She learned so much in such a small amount of time.. great work.
brilliant enthusiastic fun clear and exciting 😆😆😆 thank You so much 🤩🤩🤩 🙌🙌🙌 think i’m gonna go look to buy a horn 🎺🎺🎺 i like the wee half size ones 🤔🤔🤔 and thoughts, like is that a good idea, them being smaller are they quieter etc 🔊🔊🔊 🔉🔉🔉 ❓❓❓
Ok, but HOW do you get those different pitches from the same fingering? Blow harder? Softer? I can ge the "C" but can't get the G or any other pitch without sounding like a wounded duck.
Nice starter vid. Jazz Guitarist here 62 YO have issues with my left fingers so I bought a horn to keep my music playing alive. I am loving this thank you so much Sir!
Thank you I am currently a French horn player and I just got a trumpet so I can learn it a tryout for jazzband and do marching band in highschool thank you a lot please make more
Don’t worry about reading notes yet. Just copy the notes I’m playing using your ear, and try and remember what those notes are called. Reading music is over-rated, and you can learn it later!
I got the busing well and before I watched this I found it pretty nice to just do a long buzz and press on the notes randomly. It helped show me what sound the notes made and what note they were. Also great video helped A LOT!
Such a good tutorial. I just clicked on 'how to start on trumpet' and some guy droned on and on for 5 minutes about 'likes' and 'sponsors' blabla. You clip is so clear. I have a question though: I;m hitting notes on my piano, and I;m a step below. So when you hit "C' on piano it's a Bb. ??
Thank you! The trumpet is in the key of Bb, which means C on the trumpet, is Bb on the piano 🤯 - so if you’re looking at music in concert pitch (the key of piano), you have to read the notes up one whole step. The general rule is to read up a whole step, and add two sharps to the key signature. So the key of C (no sharps, no flats) in concert pitch, would become the key of D (two sharps) on the trumpet.
So you’re not supposed to buzz your lips? I just started learning, but that’s the first time I’ve heard this. Can you clarify why other teachers explain you should be buzzing?
If your teacher is not a trumpet player, they probably don’t know exactly what’s happening in the mouthpiece. It feels like your lips are buzzing. It has the sensation of a buzz, but if you buzz your lips without the trumpet, and then slap your trumpet on those buzzing lips, you’ll hear that it sounds like trash. That’s because you’re not reallllly buzzing your lips in the mouthpiece. What you’re feeling is turbulence caused by back pressure and Air. That’s why I say you want ‘M’ lips that are lightly touching. You could even start with your lips apart and slowly move them together until you get a sound. The most important thing in all of this is that you listen to good trumpet players, and then try and get your trumpet to sound like that. The rest will take care of itself…sort of :)
Try dropping your jaw a little, try relaxing your lips a little, try blowing slower air, and most of all try lightening the horn on your face. Let me know how that goes. You got this, it can be sooooo frustrating at first!
Tell me about it!!! Haha - just gotta keep going. I think trumpet is easily the hardest instrument to start on as a beginner. For this reason. It just takes forever to make good, consistent sounds. It will help if you play for at least 20 minutes every day, without skipping a day. The quality of practice is less important than just doing it daily at this point. Two times a day for 20 minutes would be even better!
This shit is fucking hard but thanks to you i got a few sounds out of the trumpet im only learning "less then the basics" bassically a simple melody to prank my parents and my folk punk fanbase
you can figure out cool songs like "Hot Cross Buns" XD really great video man coming from a band teacher who is going around to schools, once a week per school.
@@AdamMeckler Thanks man as a strings and woodwind player, this video has actually helped me more than anything. Really great tutorial on the embouchre, thank you so so much!
This is a complete mindfuck for those with perfect pitch... what he described as a "C" is actually a concert "B-flat" -- I don't think I could play a B-flat instrument because of that... so I became a drummer. :-D
Much love friend. I wanted to tell you that The Father in Heaven’s Name is not “the LORD” it is YAHUAH (YA-WHO-AH) The Son’s Name is NOT “jesus” it is YAHUSHA (YA-WHO-SHA). We must repent of our sins (sin is transgression of The Law Of YAHUAH The Father in Heaven. The Law YAHUAH The Father Gave through Moses). We must repent of our sins and Have Belief On YAHUSHA The Messiah. HE Died and Rose three days later so that we can be forgiven of our sins! Let’s all run to HIM today while we still can. Much love to you friend.
This is a wonderful tutorial but my sounds are inconsistent. I keep playing the same note but every time it sounds different. The sound I'm trying to make, the buzzing, is inconsistent. How do I fix this?
sounds will be inconsistent for a while. You are developing muscles in your face you've never tried to use before! Give it some time, play every day for at least 15 minutes (more if you have the time!) - but every day is important to get used to the instrument and start making more consistent sounds. You got this!
A great tutorial, but I'm 68 years old and am missing a front tooth. so have problems with my embouchour. Should I give up ? or should I persevere... ?
Because there are only three valves on the trumpet, many different notes can use the same combination of valves. No fingering can play (from bottom to top) C, G, C, E, G, Bb, C, D --- As you get higher, the notes get closer together, so the open fingering can play more notes, which is why you see E, Bb, and D the higher you go. Hope this helps!
Thank you! Your instruction really helped me get some decent sounds out of my new trumpet. Trumpet is my new pandemic stay at home hobby. I played flute back in high school and still play a bit for fun, but I always wanted to try trumpet.
I can play everything that makes a noise. …except the trumpet but now I made a tune. My 10 year old son got us started on this instrument. Is it ok I have to play with the right corner of my lips? It’s the same when I drink out of bottles. My buddies call it Tennessee side sippin. But it sounds good and feels better. My front teeth were broken when I was 12 and It’s just habit now at 38. Thanks again for the lesson!
I mean, it’s ok to play on the side until it isn’t. Denver Dill has a book about what happened to him because of his playing off to the side. He ended up needing surgery, and then moved it to the middle and had to re-learn how to play, all after being a top-call pro. Not surprisingly, because of his work ethic, he was soloing with New York Phil like 8 months after he started playing again. Pretty incredible. If you’re not trying to be a pro, it’s fine. Ha
You could, some people do, especially if they have an injury on their right hand, but the trumpet is built so that the right hand more comfortably fits on the valves.
hi there, thanks for the tutorial mate. I started playing a week and a half ago, i can make a sound, the problem is like literally I’m spitting, and the trumpet sound like that, the sound is like spitting, if I try to not spit or get my lips closer or firm I don’t make a sound. Does anyone know what I’m i doing wrong? Help
Could be that your spit valve is full. Try emptying your spit valve before playing. Spit will come out while you play, but it should not be a large amount.
Long time guitar player, first time brass player. THIS is the video that got me that early success I needed to power through the wonky wailing walrus that was my first attempts!
POV: you said you wanted to play the trumpet in high school, and your in middle school and your parents bought you a trumpet and said practice make perfect
This is great! I’ve seen some great players insist that we’re supposed to “buzz” into it to play. I’m just starting and am having trouble with consistent tone. I’ll focus less on the buzz next session. TY
is that the same trumpet that trombone shorty uses? dang that thing looks cool. i'm a euphonium player that wants to expand to the alto and tenor voiced instruments.
GameRex I think it is the same horn Shorty used. Getzen Genesis. I sold it not too long ago when I became an Edwards Instrument Co. Performing Artist. I now play the Edwards X-13 - also a very cool horn!
Thank you so much for this video!!! Started playing trumpet yesterday and couldn't figure out how to okay WITHOUT lip buzz!! Buzzing made my lips feel scoured!! I tried your technique tonight just using my mouthpiece and it worked!! Looking forward to trying it when my landlady leaves again!
Nice! It is a bit different when you only use the mouthpiece. The instrument actually makes the buzz feeling happen even easier. Good luck! (Try playing in to a pillow to mute the sound of the horn if you have neighbors that don't like the noise!)
Awesome . Thank you so much all the way from India . This gave me much needed practical clarity as I just started to play trumpet few days back with basic notes.
Oh holy hell, I paid for 3 different types of Trumpet lessons, watched Youttube videos and this is the best introductory video on getting sound out of a trumpet. I'm not kidding, thank you soooo much!
Thank you for the very helpful video! I've been playing the clarinet for a few months, and it has really improved my breath control. I can produce a tone on the trumpet, but it sounds a bit like I'm farting...
"We don't buzz our lips" that threw me off because I swear that's all we did the the first 2 weeks of beginner band. 😅 kidding aside great video. My son is about to start band and I haven't played in about 20 years, I appreciate being reintroduced.
Hi Adam, thanks for your tutorial. I'm 64 and want to learn to play the trumpet. My music knowledge is very limited. I play a bit guitar and so I know C to D is 2 halve steps, that is 1 step ( 2 halve steps is 2 semitones = 1 tone/note up) . As I understood the trumpet valves are: first valve: 1 step, second1/2 step, third 1 1/2 step. So why press valve 1 and 3 to go from low C to D? That's 1 and 1 1/2 step: = 2 1/2 step I guess? Pressing the first valve is 1 step/one note up I was thinking. 2 1/2 step on guitar from C will be C to F. C to D is already confusing enough so I won't even asking about D to E etc. Is there something I don't get? Thanks for responding.
Hi Adam. Thank you for the tutorial. I am a bassist. Lately i am very much determined to learn the trumpet. I have been practicing buzzing for a couple of month and getting a bit of a decent buzz now. But i am self taught so right now quite confuse as to what book should i follow for practicing finguering and scales. Would you please recomands a book or something. Would really appreciate.Thank you.
Buy the $99 PCornet or PTrumpet. They're cheap and sound awesome and play great. Then upgrade down the road when it makes sense. Used Olds Ambassadors are generally great as well. Don't buy a new $100 trumpet from Japan or whatever. They're horrible horns.
