This is a playboi carti tutorial in FL Studio where I try to show you the formula for cooking up a song in the style of playboi carti. After listening to Whole Lotta Red, I decided to revisit Playboi Carti to try to make a more accurate tutorial than my first attempt at this 3 years ago. As an additional challenge I limited myself to only use free plugins or stock plugins from FL Studio for this cook up. I know a significant portion of my audience doesn’t have access to the more expensive plugins I use, so I’d like to make stock/free plugin based tutorials once in a while for those people.

This sounded pretty good! You get an overall Carti vibe, very well, and easily with accessible DAW tools. But I think you’re misinterpreting a couple vital points about what makes WLR sound as interesting as it does. WLR is heavily inspired by early New Wave, and those mixing and arrangement techniques add to that atmosphere; Your example uses a lot of BPF’s and layers, but I feel that makes it sound more like Die Lit and the leaked tracks than WLR, which is more sparse with alternating sections. Also, Carti’s vocals are very dry and throaty on this release, with the ad libs being more treated than the main delivery. Awesome work, regardless! 🙌🏾 Would like to see your take on F1lthy’s production style from WLR.

Yeah that was my point. When a project is hyped up for years and years the fans start imagining what the project will be like, and when it doesn't live up to their expectations it leaves them with the impression that it's worse than it actually is. Cyberpunk is a recent high profile example of this, but it's also pretty extreme. I don't think wlr is as troubled as cyberpunk on base consoles, because the current state of the game on last gen hardware is pretty unacceptable.
