How to Plug Weld Sheet Metal with a MIG Welder {Rust Repair}

In this video I show you how to set up your MIG welder and also prepare your metal for the plug welding process. I try to walk you through the entire process so that you can feel confident in tackling this process. The plug welding process is very useful in many different applications, not just automotive. So set back relax and enjoy the video, then go fire up your welder and start "Arcin and Sparkin".

Very nicely done Sir you made it look like something anyone can do. Just taking your time and not being afraid to mess up. Plus no annoying music to keep me from hearing you. Thanks I am going g to be welding in floorpans to my 73 Mustang very soon. Appreciate the hole/flange tool demo too.

Thanks. I am trying to rebuild a truck box and need to do these welds on the inner wheel tubs. I have never done it before, so I will follow your directions. I appreciate how you’ve shown different ways to do this depending on what tools a guy has.

Working on replacing a rotted out '68 mustang floor and torque boxes. I haven't done a lick of welding since I was in high school 30 years ago, so the old skills are pretty rusty (ahem). These are exactly the tips I needed to get this car put back together right and get it back on the road. Great walkthrough. Thank you!

I don't know where I would ever use these techniques, but you are teaching me a lot in case I ever need it. I'm not a welder, or struck my first arc, but will probably do it live today, .... forgo the test run. Thank you for putting yourself out there for us. I'll be welding a fender on my trailer, and new brakes for chain. Mike

If I was doing a lot of 22-18 gauge I would point thin and reduce the rake of the drill to reduce grab.

Using a copper backing will help if you have a hole on both pieces of metal (i.e. @ 20:20).... Nice video brother.... keep em coming....

Is it a felony to plug weld the drivers floor pan into my jeep? Then seam seal it? I have like 1 and 1/2 inch of over lap all around. It sits down nice and flat. From about 3 or so inches from fire wall all the way under driver seat to beginning or rear floor. I cut all the rot out also.

No just make sure you use a weld through primer between the pannels before you weld. I do floors that way, just not exterior pannels.

I use SEM and Steel it brand, they seem to work pretty good and also 3m makes good stuff!!

Great video. Was wondering.. What primer would you suggest on the grinded area of a welded on rocker panel? I don't plan on paint for several months down the road.

If your just storing it for a while you can use a good metal primer in a spray like rustolum automotive till you get ready for paint, then id sand it off and apply a good 2 part epoxy primer that is made for direct to metal.

Awesome, yeah you can try turning it up a little and see if that helps, if its still like that turn your wire speed down a little, just go small steps at a time. If you have any more questions just ask!!!!

Do you know anybody that has a 81-87 K-10 SWB frame for sale? My wife's dad left his to her before he passed away and a guy pulled out in front of me and mangled the frame.... I bought the truck back from the insurance company and I want to make it right for her..... Bless you brother
